OT: The Expanse

Judging by the Doctor Who and Star Wars memes on TKP, I'm going to make an assumption that there are a fair number of sci-fi fans bouncing around. If you haven't been watching The Expanse (SyFy, 10 PM Wednesdays), you should consider catching it. It's based on Leviathan Wakes, a novel by James S. A. Corey (pen name for Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham). The cast, the writing, and the visual effects all really seem to be in sync with the story they're telling, and there's a real attention to detail that just isn't there for many shows.

Rolling Stone: The Best Sci-Fi TV Show You're Not Watching

Season 1 (10 episodes, available on Amazon, free with Prime) had me hooked from about the 3rd episode. The second season (now heading for episode 12 of 13) is wrapping up just as intensely as the first. In terms of sci-fi, the show is getting a lot of kudos for being really straightforward with the science. SyFy recently announced they're going ahead with a 3rd season as well.

Great another Syfy show to like only to have it canceled when it get told expensive to make.

Already renewed for a 3rd season!

LOVE the show. So far they've actually covered several books in The Expanse series, and they're actually staying pretty true to the source material, even if they jump around a bit. From this point on my post gets a slight bit spoiler-y so heads up (SPOILERS)

The only thing I haven't loved about the show so far is how they've been handling the Bobbie arc on Earth. In the books, there wasn't nearly this amount of angst over who started shooting who for nearly as long. It wasn't long before they saw her suit footage and realized there was a much more dangerous thing happening than just two sets of marines fighting each other. Granted, I haven't seen last night's episode yet.

I freaking love some of the characters though, especially Avasarala. They've done a pretty great job of putting her on screen how I imagined her from the books, although obviously they aren't able to make her as foul mouthed as she should be.

The attention to detail is awesome too. The scene a couple episodes back where Amos had to go outside the station to cut into a panel and has a hard time getting his mag boots down due to the spin gravity was a fine example.

Sooooo you like the show, that's nice. What is it about? Some general story/setting info would be nice for those of us who can't watch youtube videos at work and have no idea what Leviathan Wakes or The Expanse series of books are about...

p.s. I know I could have googled it in the time it took to type this response, but, well you're the one doing the sales pitch here.

From the link:

Set 200 years from now, the show imagines a future in which tensions arise between our planet and a colonized Mars; a ring of blue-collar space stations called "The Belt" houses the solar system's lowest social class. A distress signal leads to the mysterious destruction of a ship, stranding Captain Jim Holden (Steven Strait) and his ragtag crew in deep space. Meanwhile, a Deckard-esque police detective named Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane) becomes obsessed with a missing girl named Julie Mao, who may be the key to understanding an escalating cosmic Cold War.

Just wanted to bump given the great news. Thanks Jeff Bezos!

Okay, I'll bite. Which news is that?

And thank goodness for that. It's the best show on air right now in my opinion and SyFy made another mistake in cancelling it in the first place. I gathered it was something to do with the convoluted streaming rights but still, now I have zero reason to go to that network for anything.

Was glad to see the fan base make some noise to save it. It really is great TV.

SYFY has ended so many great shows before they had run their course. Now I need to find where I can watch first three seasons.

I was happy they at least provided some closure in "mini-series" or "movie" format for some of those shows. They cancelled Farscape once they picked up SG-1, but at least gave us "The Peacekeeper Wars" to wrap it up.

I want my SG Universe closure dangit. They did that show dirty. Like most sci-fi, the first season took a little while to get off and running, but S2 was great and left it in a bad place when it was cancelled.

I agree with that. Universe was just starting to get good when a new person came in and wanted to take Scifi in a new direction. We see how well that turned out.

I don't remember SG Universe. I do, however, remember some SG show where they tried to be too much like BSG. The franchise peaked with Atlantis. They stripped away enough of the campiness of SG1 and introduced a better cast of recurring characters.

Amazon Prime has seasons 1 & 2 free (I am 2/3 through season 2.) They are still broadcasting season 3 so it is not available on prime yet.

First 2 seasons on Amazon, 3rd season on the Syfy app. Or wait till it comes out on Amazon :P

Apparently Bezos was piiiiiiiiiiiised that Syfy got it in the first place. Not terribly surprising that he saved it.

I thought we agreed to not dig up old threads. I was really worried The Expanse had re-injured it's ACL and would miss the upcoming season. /s

Ain't this some bullshit. I just finished season 2 on Prime and went to start season 3 on SyFy On Demand/on the app and they only have the last 6 episodes available; which means I can't catch the first 2 episodes of the season.

edit: made the screenshot less ginormous.

Man, I hate it when companies pull this shit - like, hi, I want to watch your show and you are ACTIVELY PREVENTING ME FROM DOING SO. Bad business :-/

Best duos in Hokie history: Hall & Adibi, 3rd & Tyrod, Georgia & Liz

wondering if it is stuff like this that leads them to cancel these shows. I really feel that at least the current season should be available on demand.

Now I have to wait until it is on Prime or they re-air those episodes and I catch them that way.

Yep. This has been a huge part of the issue with WHY it got cancelled. SyFy only has specific live first-airing plus limited streaming rights, Amazon and other parties hold all the others. Its fully financed and produced by the production company - not SyFy - and SyFy only bought the rights they "wanted". Only the Live+3 day (DVR) viewing matters in the 'viewership' calculation. Thank goodness Amazon picked up for S4, and will resolve a lot of streaming rights issues as such. Lots of discussion about how production companies and traditional networks (of which SyFy still is one) are struggling to balance things.

If you're interested in such things, there are a number of good articles out there explaining the numbers and "why" this wasn't profitable for SyFy, but stand to be much more so with Amazon.

The VFX, writing, cast... Everything about this show is top-notch Science Fiction and world-building. The long-term plan is to cover the 9 books of the series in 7 seasons of TV. I hope they get the chance; this is one of the rare shows where the books / cast / writing / visuals really seem to mesh.

And no surprise there, it's Wally Lancaster with an airball that looked gorgeous on its way to nowhere...

I wonder if this going to Amazon means they can allow Shohreh to turn up the Avasarala portrayal a little. She's done an excellent job but network TV wouldn't allow a perfect rendition of that character from the books I don't think.

Am I crazy, or was there a Season 4 OT thread for the Expanse? I tried searching, can't find it.

I don't think so. I think there were some mentions of it in the Amazon Prime streaming thread and the general streaming thread.

Makes sense, thanks

Well I'm on S4E6. Still amazing and with an obvious benefit of more freedom (Avasarala has the appropriate verbiage now - matches the books). There are a lot of changes from the books but nothing that drastically changes the overall plot. I'm liking most of the changes as well. So far so good.
