Bud Foster as a Head Coach (JUST A DISCUSSION, DON'T FREAK OUT)

Coaching shakeups around the country (minus Oklahoma) have died down and we are all getting ready for the upcoming season of hokie football.

I'll own up to this, I was a HUGE proponent of Bud Foster getting the head hokie gig when Beamer retired. I thought he deserved the shot. He's said publicly that he wants to be a head coach of a P5 program. In hindsight, Whit made an incredible hire in that he not only scored a proven head coach, but one with enough charisma to keep Bud around as DC (while making 3x as much as him). I'm happy with the direction our program is headed.

High profile DC's are made head coaches of P5 programs without any prior HC experience: Will Muschamp (got sick of waiting for Mack Brown to retire, though he was the HCIW), Kirby Smart, and Pat Narduzzi to name a few.

The question is, WHY hasn't Bud Foster gotten the call since Vanderbilt in 2011 (a lot of people turned down interviewing for this gig and it turned out pretty well for James Franklin)?

I don't know the answer. Feel free to speculate, or give some juicy insider info. I'm just curious.

I have heard multiple rumors of AD's not being able to handle his badassness in the interview rooms so he does not get the gig...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I have also heard rumors of drinking incidents swept under the rug but since I have never seen anything substantial I am going to chalk that up to salty hoo aquaintances

I too have heard that Bud is very blunt and forthright at interviews. It can be quite intimidating even to an AD. I have heard he asks the question 'So, why should i come to your program?' But, whatever the case is, I'm glad but is staying with us. He's family in Blacksburg and he's got a great gig with Justin has to head coach, power offense Power Defense. A match made in heaven, Hokiie Heaven!

Because when nobody was looking, Whit had Bud's phone number changed.

But from what I hear, he's been interviewed a lot, but never picked. The only reason he didn't get the VT job was because we absolutely needed an offensive overhaul, and that wasn't going to really change without a fundamental change at the top. Glad he bought into Whit's mindset, because mark my words, Fuente/Foster will be a lethal combination once the 2017 and 2018 classes start to hit their stride on the field.

I don't think Illinois Hokie ever sprung for a domain name for that.

So was I, I'm owning up to. I have to admit the choice Whit made was the right one. I didn't think Bud would stay if this happened, and.... I was "wwwrr.....wwwrrro......nnngg" (Some will understand this quote from Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli). I hope Bud stays for a long time.

If Bud is gonna have a shot at an HC position in a P5 school, it will be soon (if that ship hasn't already sailed). This is why, IMHO, Fuente brought Galen Scott along with him (I stated this in other threads last year) - as an insurance policy and he wanted Galen to be working alongside with and tutored by Bud.

I certainly hope Galen Scott is not the pick if Bud ever leaves. He didn't field the most impressive squads at Memphis. I would prefer promoting someone from Bud's defensive tree.

Because we are Virginia Tech and we're not allowed to have nice things.

I spent a day prior to the 2014 season interviewing Bud and he straight up told me he thought a non-P5 head coaching gig was beneath him. His own criteria really narrows the field. Off the top of my head, other than Narduzzi I cannot think of another current defensive coach to begin his career as a head coach at a Power Five school. The trend among P5 hires now is to tap a hot G5 head coach, or a hot P5 offensive coordinator.

Also, Bud REALLY loves Virginia Tech and the New River Valley. I don't envision him leaving the community unless he gets a remarkable opportunity.

Thank you.

Kirby Smart?

The original post cited Muschamp and Smart which are good examples. Off the top of my head, all I had was Narduzzi. They total universe is few in numbers though. And Smart and Muschamp both descend from the Saban tree and are top-flight recruiters.

The sanity check was for me Joe. You guys are kicking ass here.

This is consistent with my comment of "That ship may have sailed". But in a way I hadn't thought of. Joe makes a good point that the trends for new P5 HCs is OCs n G5 HCs. The trend for DCs seems to have passed.

My opinion: ADs that interviewed Bud for Head Coaching jobs probably thought he would just use their school as on-the-job training so he could have some HC experience on his resume to take over at VT when Beamer retired. Despite the reality of the head coaching landscape, every AD thinks that the coach they hire is going to be "the one". No P5 school considers themselves as a stepping stone, whether they realistically are or not. And no AD hires a coach with such a realistic prospect of him leaving so soon.

Pitt should have hired him then. He would have stayed a few years, instead of the rotating door they had the past few years.

I admire Bud, and envy him his accomplishments. He's really really good at what he does, is compensated nicely, appreciated by fans, alumni, coaches and the AD alike. He has a lot of responsibility, but doesn't shoulder the extra duties of being the head coach. Seems like a great job, hope he keeps it.

Bud's a genius at what he currently does.

Even the thought of it.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Purely speculation on my part, but I honestly think Bud never took another job because he wanted to be Frank's successor. Now he won't take another job because he thinks he can win a natty under Fuente.

Man, I cannot find it now but there was a long article on Bud Foster and how he would approach a Head Coaching role, including his organization and interaction with coaches and Athletic Department/School president.

According to his wikipedia, he's already 58, I'm not sure if any school would want him in the HC role now. Only way it could happen is if Fuente bolts and maybe VT finally gives him a chance till retirement. Most Power 5 schools are going younger and cheaper.

I love this man, he's given his all to the hokies while always being the second fiddle. I'll never forget his defenses going back to my freshman year in 1995. No matter how good or bad we play, he's always intense, he's always coaching and he never quits on his players. he finds a way!!!
