I'll be traveling to the ECU game this fall with my dad. We will be hitting a few of the NC BBQ Society BBQ trail spots on our way down and back. We promised our spouses we would at some point eat vegetables (hush puppies count, right?)
I am looking for recommendations on where to stay in Greenville and if anyone has done any of the trail spots to avoid. We will be coming from SWVA, so we can start as far west as Winston-Salem.

Since your starting West, best BBQ place in Winston-Salem is Little Richards. No contest.

Okay... So where should we stay outside of Greenville? It's a 3:30 game so we should have some time drive a bit after the game. Any recommendations?
Honestly head back towards the triangle. More options, less ECU fans to egg your car and more things to do.

To be honest man, unless you're trying to tailgate for awhile, your best bet is to stay in Raleigh the night before and have a nice meal and night out. The drive to Greenville is about an hour and fifteen minutes from downtown, and traffic will be fairly nonexistent except for the other Hokies going to the game. Plus, if the game is over around 7, you can go to one of the places I mentioned below that are in Greenville for dinner and then head back to Raleigh and it'll still just be 10 pm.

If you are going to stay in Raleigh, go to Clyde Cooper's BBQ downtown. Skip The Pit.

side note. trophy brewing in raleigh is money, 3 spots. bond brothers in cary was even better, but further out.
Love Trophy's pizza, beer is pretty good, but not a fan of the crowd there. Bond Bros is excellent, but my new favorite spot is Lynnwood Brewing Concern. Haven't had a bad beer yet from them.
On the way to or from, I'd recommend a stop at Bullock's Bar-B-Cue in Durham - We've had this several times while in Durham, and it is fantastic. True Carolina style 'cue.
As far as the trail goes, Skylight Inn in Ayden would be a must-go-to, in my opinion.
Anytime we play at Duke and this topic comes up, Bullock's is my go to recommendation as well.
B's BBQ is probably my favorite BBQ spot in Greenville. Little Richards in Winston-Salem is my favorite! I haven't done any others on the BBQ trail. I became a pretty loyal customer to those two.
If you are looking for some vegetables to make the ladies happy. Cool spot to stop near Winston is Westbend Winery and Brewery. That counts as veggies, right?
I know the people who own Westbend. Pretty cool joint annnd they sell some good cigars. That being said, Winston is bumping with some breweries now. Used to just be Foothills (and they're obviously still the biggest and most well known) but now they're popping up in the older factories. Pretty neat.
I had no idea this was a thing. I've learned my one thing for the day, can I go home now? I think I need to plan a road trip.
I was there for the 2015 game where we lost in the rain. If you're looking to go out in Greenville the night before or after, I'd recommend going out in Blacksburg the night before, not drinking at the game and then going out in Blacksburg the night after.
The fans were the WORRRSSSTTT. Mostly shitty students being shitty people, but it ended up just not being fun as they were super unwelcoming and just poor sports. I won't be going back to Greenville.

I just moved from Greenville after living there for a year. To be honest, there are no great hotel options, but my parents used to come and stay at the Marriott across from Vidant Hospital on Stantonsburg Road.
For food, you have to hit up Sam Jones BBQ on Fire Tower road. Other good places are Basil's pizza (owner is a VT fan), Dickinson Avenue Public House, and Uptown Brewing. For breakfast, go to Coastal Fog on 4th Street, everyone else will be at The Scullery and it is mediocre compared to Coastal Fog's coffee and pastries.
That's literally about all there is in Greenville, the place is sort of a dump.
If you pass through Raleigh, hit up The Pit or City BBQ. The sides at The Pit are amazing, and plus there's an arcade bar, craft brewery (Crank Arm), and chocolate factory all right next door.
Boooooo to The Pit. But Boxcar and Crank Arm are great.
Everybody hates on The Pit. I dislike the owner, and the bbq is fine, but I go for the sides. Baked beans, green beans, mac n cheese and hush puppies.

Living pretty much exactly in the middle of the triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point) we can go anywhere in about the same amount of time. For Western style Lexington BBQ in Lexington and Little Richards on country club road in Winston (there are several) are tops. My favorite local Eastern style is Prissy Polly's in Kernersville. If you are thinking of making a night in the triad Winston is pulling away form the others as the town to walk around in. Stay in the Embassy Suites downtown fairly cheap and get a free breakfast. Walk to Foothills, get a beer or two, wander up 4th street to Trade street. Usually live music somewhere, and nice people watching. Go north on Trade or Liberty for window shopping art stores, more live music, a little more geared to younger crowd with WF students. Stop at the Bar-cade for a beer and some old style video games before going to Wise Man Brewing for corn hole, giant Jenga and the like. Head back the hotel with a stop at Small Batch Brewery.
Fiddlin' Fish Brewery on trade street will be open by then too. Went to high school with one of the owners and met the other owner through friends a little while back, both good guys. An old industrial building was cut out to make a C shape for a parking lot in the center and they made store fronts from the previous interior space. It's a pretty cool little center. There's a chocolate factory (really good, really expensive chocolate), distillery and now brewery all within hobbling distance.
We walked by there Saturday night coming back from Wise Man. Really cool looking facade - reminded me of Rathbun's in Atlanta - but everything was closed for the evening. Do you know when they will open?

As far as the cue is concerned, if you go near the Wilson area, Bill Ellis barbecue is money. Old school place with quality meats and sides
