JMU is favored over ECU, on the road.
(6pm Sat, espn3)
Why'd ECU fire Ruffin McNeill again?
DUUUUUUKEESSS
I'll be at the game, so unfortunately, my Dukes will lose.
Welcome! It appears you make beer. If you need an employee with advanced shit posting abilities, let me know.
This game is the game of the night for me Saturday thanks to watch espn
Finally. I plan on watching as many games as possible on Saturday. ...I only get to watch a few hours of any game played tonight because I have work at 8 (currently waiting to get off now). ..damn these 12s...
I still think its weird how this Ohio State-Indiana game is getting super hyped up, and mega-casted. I doubt it's that competitive of a game.
The other games that I'm really looking forward this weekend: Florida State and Bama, Michigan and Florida, and maaaybe NC State - USCe.
NC State vs. USCe has the Championship of Life on the line.
This made me realize that we'll get a shot at The Belt if Clemson doesn't drop a game.
EDIT: Beat me to it!
Haha, that's hilarious. That reminds me of the College Football Belt that we held for several glorious weeks back in 2011. Clemson is the current holder of the belt, which means we may have a chance to win it back
if we make it to the ACC Championship Gamein October.I'm hoping we have the Belt by October.
I had no idea that such an awesome thing existed.
This restores my faith in humanity.
Tulsa - OKST is just a race to see who can throw 50 up on the board first. That'll be a fun game
NC State plays South Carolina. And there's only one USC and it stands for Southern Cal.
As a South Carolinian, the real USC is the University of South Carolina.
I'm sure it is, in South Carolina. That's not exactly the best way to gauge it. Ask someone in Lubbock, TX who won the Tech game. Do you think he's going to tell you how Virginia Tech did?
You make a good point! South Carolina was founded first, so I consider it the real USC.
Well I guess he's just wrong then.
The Internet agrees: usc.edu
UVA fans think they have a shot at upsetting W&M
isn't that cute?
It's kinda like when we had the #beatbama thing going on. Realistically you know we were gonna lose but hope springs eternal you know?
We didn't lose to Bama that badly. Bud on the sidelines always gives us a shot in any game.
If we limit it to offensive production, we only lost 14-10.
Boy did special teams kill us that game
"Bud on the sidelines always gives us a shot in any game." Generally, I will heartily agree with you, but then I remember Matty Ice and Bud's "It was not a prevent defense!" prevent defense.
We were winning with 3 minutes left. Taking the pressure off of Ryan cost us that one, but we definitely had a shot.
That LSU game, on the other hand...
Please win W&M...

This is like praying for pie to be better than cake. There's no need, it happens regardless.
Um I think you forgot the war is over. Cake won remember?
A few observations
1 - ECU is so, so bad. After this weekend, there really is no excuse for us to not cakewalk through the next 3 weeks before the Clemson game. They made a massive mistake in firing Ruffin, and they're going to be paying that price for a long, long time. As bad as they're about to get, its nice to know they'll still be on our schedule as what should be an easy win for a long while. After the way this series has gone, beating them into the ground is the least we can do to show our appreciation.
2 - Big weekend for the ACC. NCSU-Sackerlina. FSU-Bammers. GT-Convicts. I hope the ACC cleans house with them. I'll be pulling for all 3 ACC teams to win. This really could be the message this conference sends to show we've passed them.
3 - As much as I don't want to say it, we probably want UVa to win that game. They're going to be a very bad team this year, but the last thing we want is for them to be a literal anchor weighing down the reputation of the Coastal. Let them win all their OOC games, and have them get housed in ACC play. That would be a good thing in the big picture. Not like they're really going to be a realistic threat to us anytime soon, anyway.
I don't care if it makes the Coastal look slightly weaker, there are very few circumstances where I don't want to see UVA go 0-12.
I'd rather minimize the hit to our SOS after the annual UVa beatdown, especially because of how late in the season it is.
Honestly, I don't like UVA a whole lot either (naturally-and keeping it PG while I'm still a new guy), but they need to win that game. Our schedule is not hard enough this year for them to lose that game and not have it affect us in a major way if it comes down to it.
And yeah, I'm one of the folks that really does think our beloved Hokies can be 11-1 (clemson or miami, take your pick there). It will depend on JJ under (behind) center.
Every division has a shite team down at the bottom and that's ok. So long as you have one powerhouse, a couple respectable teams, and two that don't really really suck, you can absorb a LOLUVa at the bottom of the totem pole.
Yeah, and I haven't seen the crapfest of NC State/Wake Forest/Syracuse/BC being an anchor on the Atlantic.
I mean, they just have FSU and Clemson at the top, and Louisville right behind them, sometimes with them. But those other four teams play hot potato with that worst record in the division.
I'll be pulling for NCState, FSU, and GT... but I will not be pulling for UNCheat or UVA under almost any circumstance.
I'm not sure who I want to win on Monday.
A GT win would help the perception of the ACC. But, it might also mean that we have the "good" GT again, and I really don't want to deal with them this year.
Plus, with as uptight as Butch is, and having to deal with Chinballs, a loss might cause something in his head to pop, and that wouldn't be good for his health.
As far as I can tell, our head to head with GT is not impacted by whether they're good that year or not.
Regardless of the outcome of our game against them, I just don't want to see them in a good bowl.
We already know they're going to be hurting whenever they need to replace Chinballs, so if they end up tanking for several years before he finally either quits or is fired, it'll be an even harder rebuilding process.
Not sure he will ever be fired. It seems like every time he has a good year, they go ahead and extend his fully guaranteed contract. Then in the bad years, they would still have to pay him if they went ahead and fired him.
If he has 3-4 bad years in a row, that's at least one contract extension he misses out on.
Paul Johnson is the herpes of the ACC. He's terrible, annoying, makes things miserable for everyone when he's successful, and worse yet, you just can't get rid of that shit.
Every division except the SEC West has an anchor team. UVA could lose till the end of time and I still wouldn't care, and it wouldn't affect the ACC's perception overall as long as Duke isn't down there at 2-10 with them every year.
Edit: This is what I get for replying 15 minutes after I opened the tab.
I think Ole Miss is volunteering as tribute.
Miss St lost to South Bama last year. So basically the entire state of Mississippi is holding the SEC back.
It would be great for the ACC if Clemson, FSU, Louisville, Miami, and VT hung-out in the top-20. Need Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, NCST, and North Carolina to be good programs too. I always cheer for ACC teams to be successful the weeks they aren't playing VT. It's good for our reputation to beat good teams. Good for our rankings, etc. SOS is important.
I root for every ACC team playing out of conference, except UVA.
I don't have a problem rooting for the Atlantic teams, but I will never root for UVA and it's really hard to root for GT, UNC, Miami, and Pitt regardless of how it makes the conference look.
Agree. My perfect scenario is for every ACC team we play to be having a great year...until we destroy them. Except UVA, they can lose every game and it wouldn't get old. Let the rest of the conference hold up the SoS, and watch UVA come up with more excuses for why they don't care about football while we are embarrassing them.
AND HERE WE GO!!!!
Does anyone think we will be able to see the tech/wvu game online via watch espn on Sunday?
I'd surely hope so. It's just on ABC, which is owned by Disney, who also owns ESPN, so the ABC games are always on WatchESPN.
If this years is like the last few seasons, then yes ABC games will be available on WATCH ESPN.
Is this through the Sling TV app or another app? We have a Roku and I'm concerned about this not working and having to scramble to watch it.
I'm watching sling through a Roku box and between espn3 and the ACC network extra, I've got every game on ABC and the ESPNs. Except the Miami game, that ones blacked out for some reason.
Sweet. Hopefully the stream doesn't shart its pants, I've had really bad luck with espn3. But so does everyone and his cousin (see what I did there?) so not a big surprise.
If you can't find it the sling app, you should be able to find it in Watch ESPN.
I would highly advise against it. Apparently ESPN made some major changes to their streaming service recently (in the last week or two), and I tried watching stuff at multiple points yesterday and each time I spent more time watching the spinning "buffering" circle than actually watching football.
Shortly after noon I switched to Fox Sports Go to watch Maryland upset Texas with no stuttering whatsoever. I gave up on the late afternoon games and started watching Netflix instead. Then in the evening I got so fed up with it that I scrounged around and found the FM antenna that came with my sound system receiver (essentially a thin wire with a coax connection), plugged it into my TV, and tacked the end of the antenna to the ceiling, so that I could pick up ABC to watch FSU get systematically dismantled by Bama. If you have another option (friend with cable, sports bar, antenna) I HIGHLY recommend taking it.
Streaming ESPN has almost always sucked for me. With games this weekend, the video would freeze, but I would still hear the audio. Or, the audio would be out of sync. I have had very few issues with the Fox Sports Go app. Why can't ESPN be better? I guess they have more content, but streaming sports just sucks in general. I have come super close to upgrading my cable subscription to get ESPN so I wouldn't have to use their AWFUL app.
This past weekend was the first time since about 2010 where I've had issues trying to stream ESPN and couldn't blame those issues on a bad connection on my end. The old setup wasn't pretty, but it was functional for me at least. Now, I'm lucky to see even half of a drive, multiple times this weekend I was trying to watch a game and it would occasionally skip 2-3 entire plays due to the buffering.
If anOSU was playing a top team right now they would be in a lot of trouble.
I forgot how much I missed:
- a receiver going up and getting a fade on third down,
- a linebacker filling the gap on the read option,
- a DB ripping a ball out as he and the receiver hit the ground,
- a pulling guard on the hunt,
- scrolling scores of schools I've never heard of, and
- the first time I'm seeing these same commercials I will watch until January.
God bless college football.
Hangin with my friends, and twins
A little too drunk for a work night
I always love the tell-tale sign that football is back. "Iccce cold Dr. Pepper HERE!"
I'm watching scores go across...."holy crap, Wake Forest has scored 51 points?"
Ohio State's offense is still very, very broken. No wonder James Clark decided to join the Good Guys.
What's up with Laura Rutledge's mic?
Laura Rutledge had a mic? I gotta admit, I didn't notice.
Mic or no mic, she's very qualified.
I'm kind of enjoying the All-22 feed on WatchEspn. Is it something new this year or was I not paying attention?
This Indiana receiver is unstoppable.
Too lazy to look it up myself...anyone know if former VT commit logan byrd won the starting QB job for UNC?
Interestingly enough, I only saw this tweet because the Belk Bowl account liked it.
Whoever runs the belk bowl twitter is top of their game.
And don't forget, Indiana travels to Charlottesville next weekend.
(I also love how spell check doesn't recognize Charlottesville.)
Weren't a lot of LOLUVA fans talking about the the Indiana game being a win? I could see them get blown out.
If Indiana pulls off this upset, expect to see Urban retiring early next week and eating some Papa John's pizza with Peyton.
How are there all these low level games on TV, but ACC game not.
Which game on an ESPN TV channel would you bump off for a Syracuse vs. FCS game?
A 2013 NBA game, Sportscenter, not to mention it could have just been on a regional channel instead. Last night, Army v Fordham was on TV, Navy FAU, Charlotte Eastern Mich were all on my TV here in SC.
Didn't you watch BC-UNI? Close, exciting game of awful football. Lefty was worse than I thought. He managed to take the team with more talent and try to win with tricky play calling. WR screen every damn 2nd and long. I am so thankful for CornFoo. I we could get bowl eligible with that play calling we will be in national conversations again this year or next.
Army/Fordham was on CBS Sports Net, which doesn't have rights to ACC games, so you can't argue that one.
Everything I've see says Charlotte/EMU was on ESPN3, so I don't know how it was on your TV, unless a local station somehow picked it up because of Charlotte.
The only game you could reasonably argue is Navy/FAU, but I'd still give the edge to that game, because you have Lane Kiffen's debut at a new school vs. a service academy. That's going to have broader appeal than a bottom feeder ACC team vs. an FCS team no one's heard of.
One of the ESPN channels showed an NBA game from 4 years ago. How shitty is the ACC contract they can't get air time over a 2013 NBA game?
Which channel?
ESPN classic. Yea it's a low viewership channel but it's better than internet. Same with ESPNnews. Rather on a channel anyway than ESPN3. No one scrolls through watch ESPN and stops to watch a Cuse game you have to go looking for it.
You realize the whole point of ESPN Classic is to show sports reruns, right?
And actually, it's not better than the internet. It would get locked out on WatchESPN for anyone who doesn't have ESPN Classic on their cable system, which is the majority of people.
I'm pretty sure anyone watching the Syracuse game is specifically looking for it anyway, so scrolling through WatchESPN isn't different than scrolling through the channel guide on your TV.
ESPN makes that decision, every game on TV is t also locked out of Watch ESPN. I'm not sure about you but when Tech isn't playing I have my four tuners all set to different games and switch around and watch them. The other night I watched part of FAU, ARMY, Charlotte, Wiscy, Colorado, BC, Wash game. If it's football and on TV I at least see a few minutes to see how competitive it is. As for ESPN Classic yes it shows classic games but what stops ESPN from using it to show football on Saturdays?
They fired all their announcers?
No they have plenty of talking heads they fired the actual journalists and writers.
If you're referring to games on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, etc, then you're not logging into WatchESPN correctly.
1.) It's SD only.
2.) It's not on a lot of systems.
3.) It's getting phased out to an On-Demand platform. Eventually. Maybe.
Playoffs and bowl games were on both so it's totally a choice made by ESPN to block them when they do. I'm looking at ESPNC on HD right now.
Then today we get Michigan State and Bowling Green but not UNC versus Cal on TV. Is the ACC held in such low regard they can't even show a PAC vs ACC game?
UNC/Cal is on the ACC Network. It should be whichever channel that has been airing the 12:30 ACC games the last two years. Here in Richmond it is the CW (FiOS 513). Only difference is that this year they moved them up to 12:20 from 12:30.
That channel is subject to so many blackouts or changes. While an actual ESPN channel is showing the other game. Again ACC gets no respect and I blame the league offices for being so far behind on the TV train.
If you want to talk about disrespect, last night I was able to subject myself to the BC vs N. Illinois game, yet the Colorado vs Colorado State game was only available on the PAC12 Network, which the vast majority of the country does not have. BC is an ACC bottom feeder and CU just played in the PAC12 Championship game.
If you have a problem with archaic blackout rules, that is entirely understandable, but that is not something that ESPN or any other network can control. Your beef is with the people in charge of bullshit blackouts.
The point is, you used the UNC-Cal game as an example of a game people cannot watch, but it is in fact on a channel that a lot if people can get with just an over-the-air antenna, much less an expensive cable package. There are much better examples of the ACC getting disrespect.
The ACC channel is regional specific, others will get Miami game or Pitt game. The BC game was an away game at NIU so TV is for the home team. Yep a G5 team has a national network for its league. Another example later today Boise State and Troy will be on a primary ESPN channel, they could have moved the UNC Cal game back and shown that instead.
It is really difficult to have a rational discussion with you when you keep moving the goalposts. What exactly would make you happy?
Everyone acknowledges that the ESPN-ACC deal is not great, but if I really wanted to, I could have watched that Syracuse game you mentioned with two taps on my phone. On a friday night. How is that not progress in terms of access?
The UNC game you complained about is on a national channel that everyone has access to. Even though it is regional, are you sure they will air Pitt and Miami vs FCS teams over the P5 vs P5 UNC-Cal matchup? Even if they do, I'm sure Pitt and Miami fans would rather watch their teams, but would still have access to the UNC-Cal game. Even the ESPN-ABC window is regional. They put the regional game on ABC and the other game on ESPN. Regional access serves more customers. You live in S. Carolina. You should easily be able to watch the UNC-Cal game on a national network. If it is blacked out, then complain. But complain about stupid blackout rules, not about the ACC-ESPN deal which has no control over blackouts.
I think we are spoiled by the access we have and will always want more. Every conference except the SEC can find examples of DISRESPEKT.
The ACCN isn't national it barely covers the ACC footprint. Blacksburg was blacked out for several VT games on it last year. When independent and G5 teams can get their games on a true national channel like ESPNU, ESPN2, FS1 CBS sports etc the ACC has failed in its job of marketing the teams. I don't want to watch a game on my phone, I want to sit down and turn on one of my 800 plus channels on my 70 inch TV and see two P5 teams play without hoping that the CW is instead going to show an infomercial (happened last year here). Blackout rules are set by the network you know that right?
What in the heck are you talking about? Have you even looked at the list of ACC Network affiliates that I post every week? There's stations in Hawaii that show that game.
And are you sure certain areas are blacked out, or they just get pushed to another station for a week or two? I know in the Blacksburg area, the game jumps between WDBJ and the 21/27 duopoly.
Unless Andy Bitter, Ricky and other people who cover Hokies sports are too stupid to find the games they complained several times last year games were blacked out in Blacksburg, especially during basketball season.
Were they talking about on TV or on WatchESPN?
I think you're missing some of the point here. Look at who owns what rights.
ESPN owns all of the ACC rights. They also own most of the SEC rights (outside of one or two games a week that CBS has). They share the other P5 conferences with FOX.
After ESPN and FOX have grabbed all of those teams, all that's left for the likes of CBS Sports Network and NBCSN is to turn to the G5 and FCS conferences.
So you can't complain about CBS Sports showing some crappy G5 game instead of an ACC game when they don't have the rights to the ACC.
No, you're just wrong. The Pitt game is on ACC Network Extra, which is just a special logo they put on ACC games on ESPN3.
The Miami game is the RSN.
The ESPN Tv schedule says "ACCN" next to Pitt and Miami games. Same thing it says for Cal UNC game. Still doesn't explain why ESPN would show Boise State and Troy on a primary channel over UNC game. The ACC waited too long to get a TV deal and the one signed years ago with Raycom split was trash.
ESPNNews isn't even showing football games today?? What's the point of having an ESPN deal when they won't even use their channels to show the conferences games.
First of all, ESPNEWS wasn't even a channel to show games until about 3 or 4 years ago. It's not all that practical for ESPN to show too many games over there, because it's the least carried ESPN channel (other than Classic, which I'm not sure is even a real channel anymore).
Second of all, they limit how many games they put on NEWS, because they like to use it for overrun. Since ESPN itself is pretty tightly scheduled today, I'm pretty sure there's going to be some overlap in the games, especially with ESPN2 being completely out of commission due to tennis.
Then bump the lower ranked or less interesting games, but at least try that all I ask. Try and get more ACC and P5 versus P5 games from any conference on TV.
Two years ago, it said ESPN3 next to those games, even the ones on the Raycom broadcast. ESPN is trying to keep you with their platform.
All of the games on the schedule with "ACC Network Extra" except for Cal/UNC is basically an ESPN3 broadcast with a different logo.
And sometimes, Raycom gets a little bit of a say in what game they get to broadcast. Cal/UNC is a better matchup for them (in order to sell their package to different stations) than, well, any FCS team.
If you have problems with your local affiliate showing the games, then contact them. Contact Raycom. I did after the VT/App State game in 2011 where the Fox Richmond station cut the game off in the middle of the fourth quarter. And it got their attention and they haven't had that issue since. (Fortunately, they moved it over to a different channel in Richmond, with less chance of preemption.)
I know it's early, but Washington does not look like a Top 10 team. Rutgers is dominating the LOS.
Some more chaos afoot- Utah State up 10 in the 1st quarter at Camp Randall.
Some good games tonight.
USU won't win but itll be fun to watch at the very least.
Also my only request for the Fightin' Lane Kiffins is to either be great or horrible in every game, just don't be boring.
Someone remind me why wiscy is so highly ranked? They look awful plus another targeting ejection I don't quite agree with
Washington has looked bad, Wisconsin has look d bad, anOSU didn't look that good.
Side note Wisconsin's DC is only 34 and in only his second year of coaching.
Boston college losing 10-3 to northern Illinois w 7mins left in the first half.
Go Navy!
Jesus this BC-NIU game is PAINFULLY familiar.
Addazzio looks lost and confused every time they show him.
Its what happens when you hire someone 'to be a dude" and not actually coach football.
Today, we are all tribesmen (or whatever Bill&Mary is)
As if he hasn't trolled Hokie fans enough over the past few weeks, David Hale just spoke about how we lost "Jared Ivans."
???
A new quarterback generally means 'quarterback issues' to your average fan and sports media, especially if the new QB is an underclassman.
Unless your Alabama or FSU. They were all up Alabamas QBs butt last year. Francois had to earn it but he did by getting pounded and continuing to get up. He is going to be really good in another year despite what he does this year.
Wow I didn't know any of Melvin Keihn's story. Wish they had done a piece on him while at Tech.
I still don't understand the whole situation with what happened when he was at Tech and why he left. Makes me incredibly mad, he seems like a great guy and has an incredible story.
I really appreciate the collapse comment chain function sometimes.
You weren't enjoying watching the same complaint get rephrased over and over?
Des, lee, and Kirk all picked vt

Looks like Cal unc is on CBS. I'm in northern NJ in the NYC market.
Looks like Kenan is only 50% full from the shots I've seen so far.
The Heels all know the game won't count since it's raining anyways.
College football coach extraordinaire Tommy Bowden picked UVA as the ACC sleeper team and VT as the most overrated team on the ACC kickoff show,
Probably still butthurt that VT turned his Thunder and Lightning into Partly Cloudy and Drizzle.
The ACC crew calling the Miami game just said Miami is expected to win it all. Y'all hear Miami is Bak.
What kid wants to go to UNcheat and play in front of these pathetic crowds.
Opening day and playing a solid OOC opponent (Cal is nothing special, but definitely a much better matchup than any school with a cardinal direction in its name) and UNC has like 60% filled.
Pathetic
There are front row empty seats.
Not surprising, they have those seats empty every game. The front row is the worst seat in the stadium. You can't see a thing.
Maryland giving Texas the what-for.
They were outscored 102-0 in all time meetings before today.
Today, they're outscoring Texas 21-7, mostly on turnovers. Those turnovers will get after ya.
I want Texas to be knocked down but not with Maryland doing it. Need Maryland to suck.
Maryland has done some special recruiting lately, and that needs to stop.
Not that I like Texas, either, but I'd like to see Texas win this one.
Edit: Texas showing no defense at all in this game. Just got a TD pass and the receiver was wide open.
Maryland will always be doomed to the same division as Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State. They're in NC State level purgatory.
Sooo, pretty much where they were in the ACC?
Wow. No I'm almost starting to feel bad for these Texas kids.
Maryland just drove down the field to score another TD. Hope that failed 2pt conversion doesn't come back to bite them.
Maryland just recovered their own kick, at the Texas 20 yard line.
If it weren't for bad luck, Texas would have no luck at all.
Texas is in a big hole. They need to start climbing out of it.
EDIT: What a freaking game. Texas just returned a blocked field goal for a TD.
Holy crap! I have no stake in this game whatsoever, but it is by far the most exciting game on right now.
I'm putting the remote away with this game on. I hate both these teams, and I'm going to enjoy every minute of this stink-off they have going on.
Maryland 21 Texas7. NOt that I like MD but screw Texas and Hermann
Miami getting that homecooking against Bethune Cookman, you know because they are Bak.
I'm already dealing with the existential dilemma of wanting to laugh at other ACC schools sucking but also wanting the ACC to be considered a top 3 conference.
I pull for ACC teams when they're playing OOC.
Well, except for UVa.
Rumors of Texas being back have been greatly exaggerated
Blocked FG by Tx with run back. 27-14 Md. Both Tx scores by their D.
Missouri State @ Missouri is lowkey the best game on right now, even if Maryland @ Texas is funnier.
There's 5min left in the first half and the score is 41-35! So much for SEC defense.
Texas fans:
Gotta love Raycom. The Carolina-Cal game feed just dropped out for several minutes with a color screen flashing "NASCAR"
#goACC
Wyoming-Iowa is a snooze fest. The anointed number 1 pick for next year hasn't looked good, and Wyoming's punter whiffed real hard on a punt.
Who would've guessed??
CBS in Richmond has an infomercial.
Cal @ UNC is on CW
Nuh uh, it's on NBC
Aaaand former VT recruit Jalen Dalton just got ejected for targeting on a roughing the passer.
That kid has discipline issues. I think he got in trouble for this last year, too.
Show that to Trumaine!
And he seemed to not give to craps about it either as he walked off.
It's hits like Dalton's that have no place in this game. I'm all for hitting hard, but leading with your head and using only your head to hit the guy should warrant a much longer suspension than one half. To keep this crap from happening, the ACC or some outside body needs to be able to suspend these guys for more games for hits like that. If the QB was ducking his head and contact was more incidental, then missing the second half is warranted.
These types of hits are what has my wife keeping my boys from playing football.
Dalton from unc with the dumbest targeting I've ever seen.
He still has been ejected from more games than he has career sacks.
And Cal scores on next play. Hahahah.
Bam and Cal scores a TD on the next play. Dalton's penalty came on a 3rd and 12 where the QB threw the ball away. Wow
Texas vs Maryland:
Don't know what to make of these two teams. Texas not looking impressive at all.
Had to run an errand seeing lots of talk about MD QB's? What's up?
Pigram injured his knee, and they put Hill in. Four star freshman QB in his first game.
Someone typed he was listed as 3rd string.
He's their star future QB, but he only enrolled in July.
He's young, but seems to have some skills.
And they burned his RS wow.
Yeah, and they didn't hesitate about it, either.
Dumb move to go for it. Bad play call also

Always overrated. Every year
Given the play before, I'm not sure why they had the confidence to go for that.
That is a top notch SpongeBob meme
Remind me why Texas was ranked again? Three straight losing seasons...
Tom Herman over-hype.
They were a disaster out there today.
Because they're bak?
UNCheat fans be like...
O but it was raining! Doesn't count!
Cal is a bad loss for UNC. I don't think many projected Cal to even make it to a bowl game. UNC is in a rebuilding year though and they put in that's senior QB only to have him throw two picks.
NC State is looking good on offense, but the defense clearly has big game jitters right now. Can't seem to stop making silly mistakes.
Michigan's jerseys are disgusting.
Also, harmful to your eyes.
Wear your eclipse glasses.
Getting ugly to end the UNC game.
They do not look good at all
Damn ACC Coastal not looking good so far, Pitt struggling with Youngstown and UNC losing to Cal.
Can't say I'd be too upset to see Nardouchie get beat.
Dude losing these OOC games has to stop if ACC wants bigger payouts and respect.
Yeah, I get it. But, it's still fun to see him lose.
Eh I don't think anyone will remember or care that what will be a mediocre UNC team lost week 1 to Cal in terms of ACC respect.
Unless FSU gets embarrassed tonight, the ACC should be fine perception wise. We have the most P5 OOC games of any conference this year, plenty of chances as long as we take care of business as well.
All we need is for FSU to seem credible vs Alabama, and VT to beat West Virginia.
I wouldn't mind if NC State beats USCe, either.
Pitt-Youngstown State going into OT after Pitt missed a GW field goal
This could turn into an awful OOC weekend for the ACC.
It'll be okay.
Pitt wins with a walk-off pick in OT and celebrate like it's the super bowl haha.
I won't name names, but I remember someone celebrating a 0-0 tie with Wake Forest at the end of regulation like it was the super bowl.
I can't stand Pitt, but I don't want to see them lose to Youngstown State. I'd rather see them as a quality win for VT later in the season.
William & Mary quarterback is also the punter. It's very confusing.
He's more of a punter today.
But not much of a punter at that.
Two Michigan passes two pick sixes. Really thought Michigan would be running away with this game with all the Florida suspensions.
Got to suck for him to get benched after a little more than a quarter.
Florida with 2 pick six's in a row. Wouldn't mind seeing VT do that to WVU tomorrow.
Might be the Michigan uniforms. They may result in blindness without the appropriate eyewear.
Michigan is in shambles right now. If their QB play continues at this rate it, Harbaraguh might have the worlds largest stroke.
How is it that Florida can just not get anything resembling an offense after all these years and their level of recruiting?
Baffling
Plus, isn't McElwain an offensive guy?
Yep, former OC at Bama.
It's just cultural at this point....or The Curse of Tebow?
NCST getting so many chances and just blowing it. Would like to see them get the win against the SEC.
Annnd it's gone.
Geez when was the last time a P5 team more than doubled yards and first downs and only had a -1 turnover difference and still lost?
I don't think I want to research the answer to this question...
Zaire= not good.
ACC waving that banner proudly today. Pittsburgh beats Youngstown St in overtime, UNC loses to Cal, and NC State losing to SCar.
Duke, Clemson, and Miami taking care of business against weak competition today at least.
Hopefully F$U can get the job done along with the good guys tomorrow. I also think GT will upset the champions of life on Monday night. It would be a nice ending to the weekend.
USCe are the current champs of life.
South Carolina hasn't lost a game to a team from North Carolina this century (9 FBS games).
Florida and Michigan. Not really sure if either team is any good. Holy hell, just a game of seeing who can fuck up the least.
Either one could beat Texas.
Edit: On reflection, of Florida's 17 points, two touchdowns were pick sixes. One of those was pure luck - catching a deflected pass. The other was an overthrown pass. So they might be competitive with Texas.
I think Boston College could stimey that train wreck.
I'm good with both Florida & Michigan sucking this year.
Michigan won in spite of spotting Florida two touchdowns.
So they clearly sucked less.
My wife was cheering for team Meteor, too (that's a common Buckeye sentiment I'm told!).
Indeed it is! Go team Meteor!!
Agreed, I don't think either of those teams were very impressive. But get ready to hear the talking heads babble on and on about the B1G being the best conference after this game and Maryland beating an extremely overrated Texas team.
I'm not surprised Maryland is beating on their chests, but Texas really stunk up the place.
Western Michigan still rowing that boat??
Looking solid so far...but the Darnold is tremoring.
He's really impressive.
Supremely athletic, coukd probably use another year to get that passing in order though. Has a rocket for an arm, just never too sure where it's going.
Time for Florida State and Bama...
Unfortunately, one of these teams has to win.
Bama and FSU game getting good but not good blocking from FSU on the third down try yikes
Sleezebowl update: LU and Baylor tied at the half...
At least we'll never have to hear about the 2010 JMU game from an ECU fan ever again.
Let's hope we also beat ECU by at least a similar margin this year or else we'll hear about it from JMU fans.
Man...how bad did ECU mess things up??!! Ruffin made them relevant. They fire him, go 3-9 and just get dominated by JMU.
None of us understood why they fired him.
Duke scored 60.
Wasn't Sam Darnold supposed to be the next big NFL caliber qb coming through college? Today he's been bad relying on the run game to beat a meh western Michigan team
LHVL struggling with Purdue. Can't say I saw that coming.
...and Purdue takes the lead. This has been a #goacc day so far.
I know people say it's not a big deal but it would be if all the scores as they are now held up. ACC has to win these games against P5 teams.
Is Purdue good now? Or is Louisville bad?
Or are they both somewhere in the "ok" middle?
The guys on Sports Gambling Podcast were pretty high on Purdue's QB. Combine that with Louisville's sloppy play and you get an easy cover for the Boilermakers.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
DUUUUUUUUUUUKKKKEEESSS
We just need to hope UVA doesn't hire coach Houston after Mendenhall fails. The dude can coach.
FSU cannot block Francois is gonna get beaten into oblivion this year if they don't improve in protection
Annnnnd there goes his knee
CJ Reavis was ejected on a questionable targeting call. Will be suspended for the first half of the NC State game next week I believe.
Who's he playing for now?
Marshall
Can we take a moment to appreciate the lights in Mercedes-Benz real quick? Looks like they're playing in sunlight. Buddy of mine is there said, and I quote, "It's super bright." So...there ya go.
didn't notice until you said that but holy shit yeah
Wait....watching on tv I've been thinking the opposite. To me, it looks very dimly lit. I've been texting friends saying, what's up with how dark it is. Weird....
I've been looking up at the bar on occasion and thinking it's a highlight from earlier in the day (has nothing to do with the whole bar deal, I swear).
Purdue getting hosed by the refs on this drive.
Beat me to it the refs are bailing Louisville out big time no way that was a touchdown
In sleezeball bowl Liberty is beating Baylor 48-38. When does the meteor take the place out?
-ECU looking at 0-3 at this point.
-Good year to not have JMU on a short week...
-Haven't seen the Techs play yet, but Coastal not looking so rough.
Eh, I'd argue the only interesting game from the coastal so far is Pitt struggling to put away their cupcake. Miami ate their cupcake, and UNC was expecting to be rebuilding this year anyway. Agreed that it'll be interesting to see how the other Tech does.
A cupcake who were national runners up last year.
I'm sorry who was a national runner up?
Youngstown state.
I remember a year (2012) where Pitt lost to Youngstown and a certain Tech team got beat down by Pitt.
Florida state is trying the don't block the defense strategy, it's a bold strategy that's backfiring like mad
Bama and FSU's defenses look mean as hell. No offense to be had to ight.
Bama's defense is very good and looks like typical Bama, but holy shit FSU's defense is scary this year.
Edit: Special teams... not so much.
From a recruiting perspective, if I had to choose 2 ACC schools to crap the bed in an OoC game it would be NC State and UNC. Here's looking at you, Dax, Alim, and Gabriel G.
Fing Alabama and FSU have animals around. So big and so fast! Different league.
This special teams domination by Alabama is worse than our last CFA performance. I'm wondering if there's any way FSU can stay in this thing.
FSU is toast. How many mistakes can you make in one phase of the game in a game like this? They are about to get run
FSU must have used the special teams portion of practice all summer to work on defense.
goddamn FSU special teams tossed it
Great timing for the ACC "Bring Your A Game" ad, right after FSU fumbles the kickoff and hands Alabama an 8-point TD.
Florida St is shitting the bed now....and oh yeah Louisville is getting beat by Purdue. Wonderful.
Man, ACC looking bad so far. UNC and Pitt playing like crap isn't THAT bad for conference perception, but couple that with FSU, NCSU, Louisville putting together shaky performances and it isn't a good look.
WE stop the bleeding tomorrow!
Even without a whole lot of offense, Bama looks to be slowly putting Free Stuff U away now.
it doesn't take much offense when you start on their side of the field every drive
Fuck Sweat!
Fuck Bama. Just straight up fuck em. I'm drunk.
I had the same thought, but sober.
Lucky for FSU that their defense is awesome, or this would be even uglier
That didn't look good for francois
FSUs season just ended. That's his ACL.
Their offensive line seems like it got worse. Feel awful for that kid because he has had to take some serious abuse
Or patella tendon. Ryan Williams had a similar fall in his rookie year for the cardinals and he tore the patella
But yes, Clemson is now the Atlantic Favorite
poor kid, he's taken a beating for a straight year in their offense. protect your goddamn quarterback.
Yeah, looks like Clemson repeats winning the ACC this year. FSU's season blew up just like what Deondre's tendon did.
EDIT: Feels like what happened with us when Brewer went down with that broken collar bone. They will lose at least 3-4 games now.
EDIT 2: And there is the crutches and cart. He's done. Hope he can get a medical redshirt.
Didn't he play as a true fresh last year? If so he would just take a reg red shirt
Either way, he can still get an extra year, and this game won't count towards his eligibility.
Well, the ACC just became wide open. Let's pick up the banner for the conference tomorrow night and make a statement.
Bama's defense is so fun to watch. They do a lot of cool things schematically, and aesthetically, they just crush someone on every play. You almost never see a soft tackle.
Baylor lost to....
Liberty, what the fuck
Mike London's Howard team with Cam Newton's younger brother as QB and a true freshman just did something incredible. They broke the record for the biggest upset in college football history by defeating 45 point favorite UNLV on the road 43-40...
I have so many questions about how this came to be.
$1000 bet straight up on Howard to win would have made you $550000, so that can be everyone's hopeless "what if" thought today.
Liberty beat Baylor? Hehehehe
Howard beat UNLV? Also hehehehe
MD just looked better than Texas, not sure if MD has a spine or if Texas don't.
No shame in losing to Alabama...special teams was the winner in that one. Hope Francois is ok.
Florida scored three points on offense. Losing ten players to suspension almost didn't look like too big a problem against Michigan, who lost like 17 players after last year.
Nothing else too major. Neat first weekend so far.
Boston College escaped Northern Illinois barely, Pitt the same against Youngstown State.
UNC loses to Cal, who was picked to hold down the cellar of the Pac12 preseason.
NC State choked away their game by not finishing on crucial drives.
JMU lived up to Vegas expectations, or ECU lived down to them
Wahoos almost looked like a football team
FSU didn't look terrible but likely ended their season before it started if Francois misses significant time
Howard winning that game makes things harder for former Tech assistant AD Desiree Reed-Francois in turning around UNLV. Tough to drum up donations on an egg like that.
All in all a terrible start for the ACC and who wants to listen to the S that will come from JMU or Liberty fans if we don't get things done tonight. Hell even UVA fans would run their mouths about a better record, blah, blah, blah.
I don't know what Fisher was doing after he got hurt either. Sending in a true freshmen to hand the ball off 3 times. Burning Hickman redshirt for that?
It sounded like the freshman was the #2 guy going into that game. His shirt was probably going to get burned in garbage time next week anyway.
He has a Jr on the team who could have handed the ball off to allow a week of discussion who who would start next week. It was like Loeffer burning Lawson for what he did. It sucks.
Can't forget about Louisville squeaking by PURDUE
Even if Francois cones back I think they eliminated themselves from playoff contention last night. They looked outclassed and I wouldn't be surprised if that kind of stinker lingers as the main reason they wouldn't belong, in a not quite as drastic similar reasoning that was applied to us after the LSU game in 2007. And it's not like the rest of the ACC helped them out this week, with Clemson the only other one who appeared to have a pulse.
Texas was coming off three straight losing seasons. Maryland fans won't want to hear this, but...Texas sucks.
I concur. Why the hell were they ranked after having a losing season last year?
Because they're Texas
Tom Herman. It's the Texas cycle - suck for a few years, hire an exciting young coach, get ranked/overrated, suck for a few years...
Yeah they shouldn't have been ranked but I think we all agree Tom Herman is a fantastic offensive coach, and at Houston he proved to be a pretty great head coach as well. There were certainly realistic expectations that he could drastically improve the team, which I think he will with some time.
They were overrated.
Still, they will improve with Herman. After all, nowhere to go but up.
Bet they wish they didn't "retire" Mack Brown.
I'd guess they don't regret it. Anyway much like Bowden with FSU or Tennessee with Fulmer, most of the fans were ready to move on. It certainly doesn't guarantee the next hire will work out but it gets to a point that wins and losses aren't all that matter. Fan would rather see something different rather than feel stagnate. Also I find it funny we have comments like this and the "why does GT keep Paul Johnson because his offense will never win big" comments in the same thread.
I mean...elite recruiting, unlimited funding, splashy coaching hire...not too far afield to be ranked in the 20s
Call me crazy, but I think wins/strength of schedule should be the number 1 thing to consider when ranking teams.
Anyone else see this ridiculous bullshit from Miami?
https://streamable.com/6u7i0
Now that is really something haha.
So, VT has the lunch pail.
Miami has the gold chain?
I hate that I like this.
Only in Miami. Maybe he gets to wear it all week or something. Not sure the culture you're trying to build with that....
I can't post on here without saying that I'm going to be a yellow jacket tonight. Beat the Vols!
^this
Fox would have been smart to stagger the time of their game.
Yeah, instead of going for the head-to-head, they should have worked together to maximize ratings for both. I know it was weird to be sitting around the house at 3:30 waiting for the game to start and not having another game or even pregame stuff to watch.
Yeah, but if they'd done that we wouldn't have gotten #Pac12AfterDark in the way of an epic comeback
It's going to be hard, but I'm pulling for the fighting chop blocks tonight. I hate tenn and their orange is stupid.
ACC needs to put a mark another mark on the board tonight. Ugh...come onnn jackets.
Butch Jones: So, how do you prepare for the infamous chopblock-o'clock?
Anonymous Coach: Lol idk...have your d-line line up 3 yards off the ball.
Butch Jones: ......ok....yeah, ok.
The GT backs seem smallish this year.
Herbie just left the booth because the horse he owns is in a race right now #FirstWorldProblems
That GT QB is gonna give us fits. On the rare occasions they pass he takes off so much.
lol, it just wouldn't be football season with you hating on Tenn.
Took a weird amount of satisfaction out of Paul Johnson just school Butch Jones that half. I can't stand Jones for some reason. And outside of our game against them I enjoy watching the triple option
I have no idea how you can enjoy the triple option. This is the most boring game in the world.
How does the GT QB have any knees left after a single season getting that low behind the center?
He almost disappears behind him.
Odd. Usually it's the people who play against GT that don't have any knees left.
It's fun to watch the triple option suck the life out of teams you hate but as I have mentioned before it's one of the absolute worst offenses to lose to.
This. Love watching other teams just get crushed by the same thing over and over again. Now when they do it to us it drives me nuts. But I get a ton of satisfaction out of these smug SEC teams not be able to stop it
I don't know if I can pull for GT. I can't stand PJ and his stupid offense. I mean they get wins here and there but doesn't their fan base want something more than low mediocrity that the triple option offense guarantees you to?
Just watching this game frustrates me.
I can't either. Fuck them. We need to tear them a new asshole.
Tennessee does not look threatening at all. I don't know how they are ranked 25. I think that's just the SEC bump.
Didn't you know? Tennessee was good once.
Watching this GT offense makes me want to freaking puke.
So boring. They've accomplished literally nothing over the years employing it, but still having to deal with it
It's such a backwards approach to the game that in a way it does the ACC a major disservice to have them here able to knock off the best teams by chance because they shorten games so dramatically. They're never going to legitimately contend for titles with the likes of Clemson, FSU, Miami, and possibly VT rolling, but they almost certainly will knock Miami, VT and/or Clemson out of it in a major upset in any given year.
I agree completely, but nothing the ACC can do about it. It's going to take the GT folks finally realizing that it's not only keeping their program from being competitive on a big time level, but also probably costing them revenue, to make the change.
They are overpaying for mediocrity at this point.
This is so damn dramatic lmao. "Bad for the ACC." Come on. If a team is gonna contend for a title they are gonna beat GT, they are gonna have to beat everyone. And it's not like GT is just fielding bad teams every year, they put out good ones occasionally.
Why was the GT band playing GOT music?
there's a player named Searcy and whenever he touches the ball, they play the theme
I hate when I like stuff like that from teams I hate.
yeah, gotta give credit where credit's due...ingenius...hope our band gets that creative in the future
We played Macho Man and Wilson (of Phish fame) in my time there.
I wonder if it's because Searcy sounds like Cercei
Georgia Tech looks tough or Tennessee is weak? Concerned more than usual for our matchup?
I think Tennessee looks super weak. I mean their defense may look ok but they are just smoked cause their offense is atrocious. They can't do anything and their QB doesn't appear to be any kind of threat at all wether with his arm or legs.
I wonder if our offense can get going against the GT defense this year unlike last year? I know the struggles against that retarded option offense, but hopefully we can score enough to keep up.
I hope so. Fortunately we'll have plenty of experience by the time we get to that game and their QB will have the wear and tear on his body that the triple option offense gives you.
Well most likely the offense will be worse than last year with all the departures. But you never know, games can play out way different than people's expectations.
Considering they whooped us last year at home, I was already concerned enough.
Possible counter point- perhaps Tenn just thought they were better than this gimmick team and didn't give the time necessary to learn how to defend it.
Good point and not entirely unlikely.
Too early in the season to say, the truth is probably a little bit of both.
You are probably right.
Illegal block below the waist? You don't say??
From GT, NOO can't be.
Butch Jones needs to spend more time with his football team and less time perusing the forums of TKP.
Well it's looking like the good guys and the fighting chop blocks are going to salvage a little bit of week 1 for the ACC.
Don't be so hasty...Tenn looks to be staging a comeback.
Seriously I go to take the dogs out and come back to this. What the F Paul Johnson. Oh well, I won't lose any sleep either way.
The ACC sucks, they said. Virginia Tech plays a weak schedule, they said.
GTs qb is impressive.
Fucking GT gets butter fingers at the wrong time.
Man I know Joey had his struggles last night but the GT kicker is worse than most high school kickers I've watched recently. Hopefully Marshall can use his legs to pick up a TD in OT.
GT has had plenty of chances to beat another overrated SEC team and just can't get there.
I'm fucking sick of the Vols always getting lucky breaks.
Butch Jones is the luckiest coach alive. EVERY SINGLE WEEK
GT should go for 2 right here
Not going to work.
Told ya. That was a stupid move.
Bold move By PJ
Butch Jones players save him again.
U suck pj. Love going for 2 but stupid play call.
Have you ever seen two bigger D-bags coming together to pretend to give a shit for that handshake at the end of the game?
The GT quarterback won't survive a full season and Tenn will lose at least 5 games
I feel bad for HokieGirl along with all other Hokies surrounded by vols. Look at the bright side, Paul Johnson had to suffer.
Just read my username. Officially surrounded by Vols and other SEC fans since 1993.
Props to you. Just recently moved to the city and all these Vols and SEC fans are already driving me insane.
Someone help me. The "feels like 98" posts have already started.
It'll be ok, Hokiegirl. Just keep the faith that this is the only championship Butch and company will ever win
Remembered how much you hated us last year and had to come check the responses. Truly sorry for your torture where you live, but not the cause of it.
Comments on the Vols here are priceless. I'm still a fan of your coaching staff and team. Best of luck this year. VT stock is steady trending up.
read that wrong.
How do you think Tenn will do and will Butch Jones stick around after this year?
He didn't say the Vols were trending up but the Hokies were. I assume if he is on our site he knows a thing or two about Vols football as well which means he knows a 10 win season probably isn't in the cards for them this year.
Unless there's a total meltdown (worse than 7-5) CBJ will get another yr. We're replacing a lot of starters this year including new QB. New OC on top of that. Too many unknowns to be over confident and too much talent not to see some hope. One thing hasn't changed though, at least early in the season like last year, they don't quit til the game's over.
Back to VT. New QB looked good in the short part of ya'lls game I got to watch.
Hope to God it snowballs on GT this year. I want Paul Johnson gone at any cost. I'm beyond done with their stupid ass offense.
GT is the biggest pain! How do they even recruit players when they know they are going to be playing a weird rugby offense and then not have a chance to get drafted?
Jesus the ACC really took a nose dive in OOC P5 games this week.
Honestly, the only person I've seen mentioning it has been yourself. There is no commentary out there that I have seen looking at it.
I don't mean in a bad way directed towards you. I mean quite simply that that narrative was pretty much eliminated over the last few years of ACC performance in OOC and bowls.
As far as we are concerned, we have to win all of our games. I mean hell, based on this weekends results the Big 12 looks like dogshit (2 ranked teams + Baylor lost), but you don't hear anyone giving Oklahoma or Okie St. a hard time about the potential for the season.
Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Miami are all teams that would 100% make the playoff if they went undefeated. I am not saying any of those 3 will, but keep going 1-0 each week and what the rest of the league is up to means absolutely nothing.
To folks just looking at W-L, the conference went 10-4.
Of the four losses, only FSU was by more than 1 score. But they were playing Alabama and lost their QB, so they're getting a pass.
GT lost in 2OT after going for two and missing.
UNC losing to Cal is one of the more puzzling losses, but UNC is traditionally somewere in the middle of the ACC football pack.
Even though Pitt won, they were taken to OT by an FCS team. However, many wouldn't notice that if the scorebugs didn't include OT next to the F in finals.
ESPNU, ESPN, XM College sports and Reddit college football of all done a table and asked the questions last night/this morning. The ACC going 2-4 in OOC P5 opponents and 0-3 against the SEC in the opening weekend isn't a great start for a conference that is advertising itself as the best.
Hmm. GT loses an extremely close OOC game in a nearby NFL stadium, faces a fairly strong FCS team this calendar week on 5 days' rest?
I had a dream like this before. It didn't end well for that ACC team.
Except that ACC team won the conference title game that year. Let's not repeat history too terribly accurately.
Oh, I was wide awake for that part. That really happened.
Jury's out on those losses though.
Well the ACC completely shit the bed this week. Except for us of course.
Just like good 'ol times
Any predictions on the week 2 AP poll?
FSU, Florida, WVU, and Texas should be dropping. However, I think WVU should have the shortest drop. In fact, they could very well stay ranked #22, just with other teams jumping over them. Florida could end up unranked after that performance. Texas should definitely be unranked.
TCU will probably get ranked, as they were the highest in the "others receiving votes section". And Notre Dame will probably jump up as well, since they're ND.
Does FSU drop further than it normally would thanks to losing their QB? I don't see them dropping completely out, but I guess there's not a lot of precedent with the #3 team losing to #1 in week 1.
Do Oklahoma and/or Auburn get higher than usual bumps to make their week 2 match ups more attractive?
Tennessee should be out but I can see them move up to 23-24 just because they won, WVU should be around 25, I can see FSU dropping to around 10 or 11 because of th injury.
Wouldn't be if ND sneaked into there. VT should be around 16-17.
