OT - Slusher Hall on the chopping block

Looks like the tallest building on campus will soon be no more.

In other actions, the board approved spending $3.5 million to develop a plan to replace Slusher Hall. Because of its current condition, Virginia Tech has determined the facility, originally built in 1972, should be replaced rather than renovated. The university plans to first build and occupy a new residence hall near the existing Slusher Hall, then demolish and remove Slusher Hall, then build a second building on the site. The two new facilities will have a total student occupancy that will equal or exceed the existing 630 beds with the intent to maximize the number of beds to the extent practical.

18 year old me wants to insert some sort of inappropriate comment here, but I won't. I'll just say it will certainly be strange not to see that building towering over everything else on campus.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

As a future VT student, I am asking TKP, How should I feel about this?
Seems like a good thing to me

Also the design plans for the new building look awesome (edit: I guess not, but it still looks awesome)

It will be a good thing for you. Make some dope memories there. For the rest of us, we're just sad the campus we love won't be the same when we go back.

slusher is an incredibly poorly designed dorm. In the wing, it's laid out as a series of "pods" with narrow hallways connecting them. The pods are just wide places in the hall with doors to the individual rooms. They aren't wide enough to do anything with so it has the feel of a warren.

The tower is an eyesore that juts out above all the other buildings around it and is an incredibly inefficient use of space as each floor has a disproportionate amount of space taken up by bathrooms, stairs and elevators. Also, did I mention it looks like something straight out of soviet russia?

Slusher tower is actually pretty cool. Each floor is so small it's basically a big suite. Very unique dorm, and I kinda feel like all the new dorms are a little cookie-cutter.

On the flip side, each floor is so small it would be very difficult to renovate to modern suite-style housing.

Probably won't be done until 2022 or so

Hey, is that Hokie Stone I see??

I need to visit 1188 Slusher before this happens. It's never been a very good looking building with all the prefab concrete pieces, but it's near and dear to my heart.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

But what about the beach?!!!!

If you play it, they will win.

I think we can get a historical marker to commemorate it

I’ll be taking these Huggies and whatever cash ya got.

Since they're putting in a new building nearby first before demolishing Slusher, it's a good bet that the beach is where it'll be going in.

The Beach or the parking lot.

My first question.

My bed faced the window and I slept late, so it was often what I woke up to.

This actually makes me kind of sad. I mean it's not a very nice building... At all. Still, I look back fondly on the year I lived there. Will certainly be weird to not see it on campus once it's gone.

Exactly. The wing was split kind of in the middle. One end of the floor was dudes and the other end was ladies.

The Tower actually went coed too in 2007 (my freshman year). I was part of the first class of dudes to live in there.

I think this is a good thing. My 4 years at tech, the building always stuck out like a sore thumb to me. It just doesn't fit the aesthetic of the campus

I hope Derring is next for the exact same reason.

EDIT: Didn't read far enough down.

I agree with you and everyone on this though. At least Derring doesn't jut into the sky as a focal point anywhere on campus like Slusher.

I always said if I won the lottery that I'd give a major gift to VT contingent on them tearing that eyesore down. The rest of campus is beautiful. Slusher Tower just sticks out like a sore thumb.

Thank God. Slusher was always the ugliest building on campus by far. It really doesn't fit the style of the rest of the dorms and buildings around it.

With that being said, I made some fond memories on the 12 floors of whores and Slusher Beach.

Slusher was always the ugliest building on campus by far

Someone didn't spend much time near Derring.

Derring? I'd take Derring over Whittemore any day of the week.

As an Architect, I kind of like Derring, just not in its context.

Whittemore only wins out over Derring for me because I think the finishes on Derring are worse. The brown brick is terrible.

should have been used as the bomb shelter or hazmat facility it was obviously intended to be

Can't argue that it was ugly, but it was also a heck of a visual landmark to help out one's occasionally inebriated bearings.

Disappointed that it sounds like it's gonna remove some green space but I'm alright with the building itself coming down.

Any word on if they'll keep the name?

agree with everyone else. tear that thing down. ugly building. terrible design. terrible living conditions. And it was freaking alcatraz to get out of there unnoticed by RA's in the middle of the night. No bueno

yes and not even floor by floor. You turn a corner, go up half a flight of stairs and you've got chicks. Walk by the elevators and through some doors on the same floor and you've got chicks. Talk about convenience!

It's amazing that nickname stood the test of time. But based on my experiences there....yeah. I made some platonic lifelong female friends in Johnson.

Lived there in 2012, obviously a terribly ugly building, but I liked how the tower was laid out though, it made it easier to get to know people, you had your 24 guys on your hall, you met all of them and went from there, my floor was incredibly tight, meanwhile people who lived elsewhere just kinda meandered around and ran into a couple of people from their dorm, sad to see it go but the new building I'm sure will be incredible

Unless you got stuck in the isolation corner room behind the elevators. I wasn't though, I just know someone who lived back there. Instead I just naturally don't get to know people.

So many misspent nights there freshman year, those girls were fun back in the 90's...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I was one of the first dudes in the wing. was there in 97. I streaked the beach, the tower and the wing. That was some of the tame stuff. there was a dropped ceiling on the 4th floor loadded with hundreds of empties. had like 6 JRs that freshman year. good times.
