Looks like the tallest building on campus will soon be no more.
In other actions, the board approved spending $3.5 million to develop a plan to replace Slusher Hall. Because of its current condition, Virginia Tech has determined the facility, originally built in 1972, should be replaced rather than renovated. The university plans to first build and occupy a new residence hall near the existing Slusher Hall, then demolish and remove Slusher Hall, then build a second building on the site. The two new facilities will have a total student occupancy that will equal or exceed the existing 630 beds with the intent to maximize the number of beds to the extent practical.

18 year old me wants to insert some sort of inappropriate comment here, but I won't. I'll just say it will certainly be strange not to see that building towering over everything else on campus.

BURN IT TO THE GROUND
literally
As a future VT student, I am asking TKP, How should I feel about this?

Seems like a good thing to me
Also the design plans for the new building look awesome (edit: I guess not, but it still looks awesome)
It will be a good thing for you. Make some dope memories there. For the rest of us, we're just sad the campus we love won't be the same when we go back.
Sadly, though, that ship has sailed.
Yep. Long time ago. Like a decade or more.
slusher is an incredibly poorly designed dorm. In the wing, it's laid out as a series of "pods" with narrow hallways connecting them. The pods are just wide places in the hall with doors to the individual rooms. They aren't wide enough to do anything with so it has the feel of a warren.
The tower is an eyesore that juts out above all the other buildings around it and is an incredibly inefficient use of space as each floor has a disproportionate amount of space taken up by bathrooms, stairs and elevators. Also, did I mention it looks like something straight out of soviet russia?

Slusher tower is actually pretty cool. Each floor is so small it's basically a big suite. Very unique dorm, and I kinda feel like all the new dorms are a little cookie-cutter.
On the flip side, each floor is so small it would be very difficult to renovate to modern suite-style housing.
Probably won't be done until 2022 or so
Just in time for Drew Harris to show up
Also the image you embedded appears to be the rendering for the new Holden Hall plans, not Slusher.
Hey, is that Hokie Stone I see??
I need to visit 1188 Slusher before this happens. It's never been a very good looking building with all the prefab concrete pieces, but it's near and dear to my heart.
But what about the beach?!!!!
I think we can get a historical marker to commemorate it
Since they're putting in a new building nearby first before demolishing Slusher, it's a good bet that the beach is where it'll be going in.
The Beach or the parking lot.
My first question.
My bed faced the window and I slept late, so it was often what I woke up to.
"slept late"
We know what you were doing perv
precisely. who gives a shit about the building as long as they keep the beach
^___This! Let's get our priorities straight fellow Hokies, Save The Beach...!!!!!
This actually makes me kind of sad. I mean it's not a very nice building... At all. Still, I look back fondly on the year I lived there. Will certainly be weird to not see it on campus once it's gone.
I thought it was twelve floors of.... women. Dudes lived there too? I learnt today.
the wing was co-ed. The tower was women only. At least when I was there.
Exactly. The wing was split kind of in the middle. One end of the floor was dudes and the other end was ladies.
The Tower actually went coed too in 2007 (my freshman year). I was part of the first class of dudes to live in there.
No shit?

I think this is a good thing. My 4 years at tech, the building always stuck out like a sore thumb to me. It just doesn't fit the aesthetic of the campus
I hope Derring is next for the exact same reason.EDIT: Didn't read far enough down.
I agree with you and everyone on this though. At least Derring doesn't jut into the sky as a focal point anywhere on campus like Slusher.
the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors
I always said if I won the lottery that I'd give a major gift to VT contingent on them tearing that eyesore down. The rest of campus is beautiful. Slusher Tower just sticks out like a sore thumb.
Thank God. Slusher was always the ugliest building on campus by far. It really doesn't fit the style of the rest of the dorms and buildings around it.
With that being said, I made some fond memories on the 12 floors of whores and Slusher Beach.
Someone didn't spend much time near Derring.
Derring? I'd take Derring over Whittemore any day of the week.
As an Architect, I kind of like Derring, just not in its context.
Whittemore only wins out over Derring for me because I think the finishes on Derring are worse. The brown brick is terrible.
should have been used as the bomb shelter or hazmat facility it was obviously intended to be
As a geo grad, I second this.
Derring Hall my dude
Edit: Looks like I'm drinking
Can't argue that it was ugly, but it was also a heck of a visual landmark to help out one's occasionally inebriated bearings.
Disappointed that it sounds like it's gonna remove some green space but I'm alright with the building itself coming down.
Any word on if they'll keep the name?
First our DLs knees, now an iconic dorm? What WON'T Paul Johnson and his chop-blocking group of football players come after?!!
agree with everyone else. tear that thing down. ugly building. terrible design. terrible living conditions. And it was freaking alcatraz to get out of there unnoticed by RA's in the middle of the night. No bueno
Tear it down and put in a bigger beach on it's lot!
Sounds like you've got a story to share, fernley...
Bigger news (to me) is that Holden is finally getting a renovation. It's needed it for some time.
I know someone who hooked up with both girls living in the same room at different times. Stories like that are the reason I will miss it.
THIS IS LIKE DISCOVERING PLUTONIUM, BY ACCIDENT
If he had a million dollars he could've saved a trip.
It's kind of scary to think of all the things that might have taken place in your dorm bed before it was yours.
That's college! Oh well! Gotta sleep somewhere.
Next thing you hear, they will be filling in the Pritchard Pit.
It's already been filled with vending machines and lounge furniture.
PACK OF LIES!
No vending machine was ever dropped into the pit. Ever. Didn't happen.
Is it true Pritcher is COED now?
yes and not even floor by floor. You turn a corner, go up half a flight of stairs and you've got chicks. Walk by the elevators and through some doors on the same floor and you've got chicks. Talk about convenience!
Damn what's next, making Johnson Hall "The Virgin Vault", coed?
It's amazing that nickname stood the test of time. But based on my experiences there....yeah. I made some platonic lifelong female friends in Johnson.
That was my mom's old dorm. She was sad to hear the news. The lesson here is that brutalist architecture does not age well. #AllNeoGothicEverything
...mom?
...yes? I do not understand the confusion.
hmmm, and when might mom have been there?
Now this subthread is going places.
TKP: Come for the GIFs and anagrams. Stay for the in-depth analysis and family connections.
Slusher Tower anagrams to Whore Results
Appropriate.
Lived there in 2012, obviously a terribly ugly building, but I liked how the tower was laid out though, it made it easier to get to know people, you had your 24 guys on your hall, you met all of them and went from there, my floor was incredibly tight, meanwhile people who lived elsewhere just kinda meandered around and ran into a couple of people from their dorm, sad to see it go but the new building I'm sure will be incredible
Unless you got stuck in the isolation corner room behind the elevators. I wasn't though, I just know someone who lived back there. Instead I just naturally don't get to know people.
So what are the Corps going to target with Skipper now? /s
SLUSHER WING 2000-2001 WOOOO
'04-'05 WOOOOOOOO
410 Slusher Wing, you?
That was my room for orientation in 2012!
Is the sink still orange?
2nd floor, don't remember the number. I was in 118 Eggleston sophomore year, though... and I only remember that because the room number and the exit number for Tech were the same :P
425 here
So many misspent nights there freshman year, those girls were fun back in the 90's...
And the 80's
I agree it's ugly but it's iconic. It was the touchdown Jesus of our campus except filled with chicks instead of books. You could see it anywhere. At the very least I hope the new dorm is also a tower
as a Lynchburg resident, I'm kind of over the whole tower thing

Shouldn't the eye of Sauron be floating over that?
you know, I got halfway through a really good photoshop of that and then work got busy. Need to get back on it for how many times I make fun of that phallic building
Remember when this was the biggest VT related thread on TKP this week?
I was one of the first dudes in the wing. was there in 97. I streaked the beach, the tower and the wing. That was some of the tame stuff. there was a dropped ceiling on the 4th floor loadded with hundreds of empties. had like 6 JRs that freshman year. good times.
