I feel bad for the guy. It hurt to watch. Was that just sympathy from the ref to say it wasn't a fumble?
I think replays demonstrate pretty clearly both that this wasn't a targetting foul, and also that it wasn't a fumble.
We just got beat on that play.
Although Street probably regrets not just stepping out of bounds. He almost became a chalk outline there.

I agree that it wasn't targeting. I actually thought it looked clean from where I sat in the stadium (sect 18, right across the field from where the hit took place) and I thought he lead with his shoulder seeing it live.
I disagree that it wasn't a fumble. He takes 3 or 4 steps AFTER securing the ball before he's hit. There is no way you can argue that's not a fumble.
I have to agree. He definitely "made a football move" or whatever that really means. That was a fumble to me.
its tough to tell from the .gif but based on an image shown below it actually looks like the ball came out after he was down :( (of course I thought it was a fumble originally, cuz I'm a homer but whatever)
I thought it was jarred loose by the hit but the receiver (impressively) manages to hang on long enough for it to not be ruled a fumble. I'm impressed the refs got the call right actually...

Clearly led with his shoulder & didn't launch at him, the impact was just fierce enough to lift KJ off his feet & give that impression. Beautiful piece of football, hope Street is ok.
All the Pitt fans trolling the likes of Bitter, Teel and Barber are all butthurt, saying he launched himself, led with helmet, breathed fire, etc.
I really felt like the announcers were rooting for Pitt. Even more than the announcers usually root against us.
I don't listen to the announcers. Just watch on mute, and then turn it up if the replays look interesting.
Mostly because of craptacular announcers like this, who make an instant conclusion under real-time speed, and then when replay proves them wrong, just double-down on their ignorance.

Love these, and Brandon Flowers was probably one of the best three cornerbacks we've had since I started watching Hokieball (Hall, Williams). That hit on Weatherford would be targeting and ejection nowadays, though.
I always thought that Weatherford play should've been ruled a fumble, and therefore a TD.
That hit was huge! Even at the top of the stands we could tell it was nasty. Totally illegal by today's standards but I love it.

Catch at your own peril. WRs see this on film and have to starting thinking a little when going over the middle or getting open on a double move. This secondary can hit and it's not just KJ.
And that is why it's done that way.
In the future, the WR may be a little distracted because he's checking the corner of his eyes for a VT safety/maroon blur.
Lost in the destructiveness of the hit is the fact that Jarrett saved Kyle Fuller's turkey on that play. It's a sure TD otherwise.
I wonder if this hit was revenge for Street beating KJ for the 48-yarder earlier in the game, though I'm not sure that was as much Street beating KJ as it was KJ stumbling on the route. But still, it was probably in his mind.
That was my concern. Kyle was beaten again in a late game situation (this time with a big lead) by a double move. See Marshall, see Cincy 2011. It can't keep happening or it will burn us.

Kyles fatal flaw. He can double moved and sometimes shimmied by.
So of course we see when Kyle gets beat by it. I just don't know if it's a huge hole in his play, or if we just don't see all the times he covers the double move?
They don't show many replays of tight coverage where the ball isn't thrown his way.
I'm not snarking -- I really don't know.
I think, because it is the end of the game, they are in a defensive shell with over the top safety help. Basically keeping the big plays underneath. I don't like that Foster does that but basically he plays aggressive for 3.5 quarters then kind of sits back. That is why there are so many yards in garbage time.
This season, Foster is leaving one really deep safety whose job it is to rotate over to whatever side of the field the ball is thrown too. The corners are jumping first moves. This means the QB can't get rid of the ball quickly, and lets the pass rush get to the QB.
On plays where the pass rush doesn't get there though, there is a window for a double move. If the QB drops it in before the Safety over the top can get there to help out, then he's got a shot for a big completion.
And so help the receiver if he doesn't get past Jarrett before the ball gets there.
Annd then... A BIG hit
Also there was that one play yesterday in the beginning of the game where it looked like he didn't know what the play was and was standing still at the snap but the receiver ended up dropping the ball.
Kyle's always jumping routes, which puts him out of position to defend the double-move deep ball. That's the way he's supposed to play it with a D-line that gets to the QB. I'm glad he does, that's why this secondary has as many INTs as all of last year.
Remember last year when offenses were converting 3rd downs while he was guarding against the deep ball? (FSU game) That's the alternative of an attacking defense. I'm much happier seeing the corners jump routes and the safeties blow up the deep routes. It's been very effective against the spread teams we've been playing, and worked pretty well against Pitt and Alabama's Pro-style offenses.
I think its an incomplete pass. WR Devin Street didn't go to the ground and maintain possession. Why was this not reviewed?

Street takes 2 steps with possession. If you argue that it was an incomplete pass, then you must also argue that it was a hit on a defenseless receiver, and thus a personal foul and 15yd penalty. You can't have cake and eat it too.
Meh, I don't personally like the defenseless receiver stuff, but it doesn't matter. I'll take the W regardless
another angle, look at the force of the hit. almost feel bad for the kid.

Announcers are now made to act like watchdogs on those things and get giddy when they see one.

I think their gut reaction when seeing such a violent hit is to assume it was illegal. He clearly just destroyed Street with his shoulder.
Live. I think most of us there and on tv thought it would be illegal. The replay on Hokie Vision, it was pretty obvious it was legal and with the shoulder. Still a rough hit, and glad the kid is ok. There was a nice round of applause around Lane when he got up.
I was mad they didn't call it a fumble. He clearly catches it and goes 5 yards from where he caught it before getting blown up.
It was clear to me at full speed, and it was only proven in slo-mo instant replay.
As I see the replay, the camera shot from the end zone shows he had the ball tucked until his whole forearms hits the ground. I was hoping for a fumble but, I thi it was clear he caught it then the hit and he lost it when he hit the ground.
Ball didn't come loose until he hit the ground.
From what I saw on the replay in the stadium, as well as the video on the ACC network linked in one of the twitters in the original post, its clearly a catch, gets blown up, he's down, then ball comes out. It was one hell of a hit, but he definitely completes the catch and was down by contact.

I can't find a video clip but my favorite hit was the 2003 UMD game, I don't remember who leveled their QB but from way up on the East stands you could tell he had no clue where he was or who he was when he finally got up!
John Congemi is a Pitt alum so of course he's gonna lobby for them. It was clearly a shoulder to the shoulder/neck of Devin Street. It was NOT a helmet-to-helmet like he cried about.

Part of that may just be trying to distract the media from the problems the team has, like their poor offensive line performance, etc.
