I support the Whoopie Pie. Cake material, named pie. The perfect compromise.
What about pumpkin roll? Is this considered cake?
What about cookie cake?
OMG they are SO good. I had one for my birthday last month from Our Daily Bread in bburg. AWESOME!
I get one from the American Cookie Co. every year on my birthday and I love it!
They have sugar cookie cakes now!
That red velvet cake though...

Side note... did anyone else know that red velvet cake contains cocoa?
Often mayonnaise, as well
Beet juice used to be used to color it red as well.
Don't say that to me. I hate mayonnaise. :\
mayonnaise been a lot of debate over dessert preferences lately
There certainly has, but hopefully we don't pecan anyone for their preferences.
(or bad puns)
Icing what you did there
Yes, Red Velvet cake is rich chocolate cake with enough red food dye to change its color. Keep it away from your couch cushions because the red will not come out. The icing is whipped cream cheese with sugar.
Cream cheese icing just ruins it for me, I think its gross. Got to have vanilla icing for the red velvet cake.
Must. not. downvote. for. opinions. Even if they're WRONG!
Do you see what happens when Tech doesn't have a game? CHAOS! No more bye weeks!
And this is before Duke. Can you imagine how bad the one before the UVa game will be?
Things fall apart.
ANARCHY!!
Icing Haiku:
Have to scrape it off
Sweetness assaulting taste buds
Does not have real taste
"Sweet" is a taste.

Agreed. I always have to ask for the piece with the least amount of icing. Thus my choice for pie.
Have to ask, is the icing homemade (or a good bakery)? Because, well-made frosting makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE. So many bakeries, especially grocery stores, have the worst crisco icing. Fondant icing is crap as well. Royal icing isn't great either. And most weddings, terrible icing.
Good icings:
Cream cheese icing
Buttercream icing
Whipped Cream icing
Fudge icing
Chocolate Ganache
Whatever that icing is for German Chocolate cake
Absolutely, a good homemade icing applied within reason is a huge difference. There's nothing worse than a cake made from a box with 3 inches of crisco spackled on top. Even fondant becomes less offensive when made fresh.
Icing is nasty
Only thing grosser would be
Eating lard oh wait
Icing...you're doing it wrong!
Plus you can just scrap it off, no biggie.
You know what doesn't have icing, though...
Angel Food cake? Cookie cake? Pound Cake?
Bundt cake? German chocolate cake (sometimes)? Crumb cake? Lemon cake (the best ones have glaze, not frosting/icing)?
I always want to take the side of pie in this argument because there are so many delicious pies, but the mighty cheese cake reigns supreme in my world! Thus I must side with cake.
Ahem, I believe the ruling on the field was that Cheesecake has a crust, ergo is pie. So, feel free to recant.
Cheesecake is more accurately a custard.
The plot thickens...
The word "cake" is in the title. There is no disputing that it is a cake.
This was my reasoning as well. Perhaps the presence of a crust and cake in the name means it has bridged the gap between cake and pie. A super desert that contains all of the strengths and none of the weaknesses of pie or cake.
French doesn't eat cheese or cake, but he loves cheesecake so...cheesecake must be pie. #Frenchlogic
Perhaps then cheesecake is the olive branch that can be extended between #TeamPie and #TeamCake.
In the spirit of current events, I move that we vote to act like we resolved this, form a committee to really resolve this, and when that doesn't work, continue this fight in February. Any seconds?
I really hate politics. That being said, this was a pretty clever post so I think it deserves a turkey leg (despite the fact that I NEVER upvote anything political....but I'll make an exception here)
Generic government-bashing is always good in my book, but only when cleverly disguised and satirical. Well done, turkey leg from me, too!
This whole conversation:
If you decide to call a dogs tail a leg, how many legs does it have.
It's just a propaganda move. A cake fanatic decided he needed to call a pie made with cheese a cake to try and win.
He also called Zima a beer.
Cheesecake, is most definitely a cheese custard pie.
I just googled this claim and I can't seem to find any association between custard and cheesecake. Please stop slandering the good name of cheesecake by calling it pudding.
Definition: Custard is a culinary preparation made by blending eggs with milk or cream. Custard is thickened by the coagulation of the egg proteins, which is achieved by gently heating the custard in some way.
http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/glossary/g/Custard.htm
New York style Cheesecake filling
40 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature and cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cups granulated sugar, divided
teaspoon salt
cup sour cream
2 teaspoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 egg yolks
6 eggs
http://www.browneyedbaker.com/2013/04/22/new-york-style-cheesecake-recipe/
It's a custard.
NY Cheesecake is a filling added to a crust that does not rise.
The only one that can overrule that Cheesecake is a pie, is Sam Rogers. (edited because how does spell check edit a name?) Thanks for the call out. It's done this 3 times, I caught it on the 4th.
I would never refer to ice cream as pudding. Now that you mention it, ice cream pwns cake and pie, so I am not even sure what we are arguing about anymore.
I hope I just sent this argument to a whole new level.
Down with pie. Down with cake. VIVA LA ICE CREAM!
Incorrect, ice cream is NOT custard. Custard uses egg yolks to make it thicker. Essentially it is ice cream with eggs. Some people call it French Ice Cream. Thus, custard is ice cream, but ice cream is most definitely NOT custard.
Thank you x3.
Now who is coming with me?
In my personal opinion, there is no piece of cake or slice of pie that can stand up to a scoop (or two) of Ben and Jerry's Half Baked.
Almost.
Philly style ice cream is not a custard (no eggs) hence my exclusion.
All other styles are essentially a custard which is then chilled and whipped into ice cream.
But, who can deny the pleasure of a good whipping?
Big 50 Shades fan huh?
I can neither confirm nor deny......
I'm saying that anything called "ice cream" is not custard. By the definition, ice cream does not have eggs. It is at least 10% milk fat because it is milk mixed with cream and sugar. No eggs. Ice Cream + Eggs = Custard.
I shall make the fallacy first, of appealing to authority, then follow with evidence.
The Great Alton Brown says: Ice Cream is a custard. (again, I exclude Philly style Ice Cream, which has no eggs).
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/chocolate-ice-cream-recip...
Now, the evidence. You'll note he makes a custard then freezes it, with the inclusion of air, to make ice cream.
This is the portion where describes making the custard.
Thus, there are 2 different styles of ice cream. A no egg (which I actually prefer) and an egg. The egg is made by first making a custard.
Cheesecake is still a pie, in either case.
Cheese cake is a pie crust which is filled.
The pie filling is essentially cream cheese and sour cream, sugar and eggs with some flavorings.
Combined properly and put into the pie crust to gently cook.
It's a custard gently cooked in a pie crust thus, impossible to be cake.
That's all fine and good, but it has "cake" in the name. Just saying.
"UVA Football" has "football" in the name. Just saying.
It's European
AJ McCarron eats cake
This just got personal.
The entire #LOLUVA football team eats pie. They say it's like uppity cake and thus perfect for them.
Everybody knows that the BooHoos eat cake, they are simply following that famous Frenchwoman, Marie Antoinette's order: "Let them eat cake." Frenchies do what momma Frenchie orders.
Thus, CAKE IS WAHOO FOOD and PIE RULES THE DESSERT UNIVERSE.
Why do I think I am about to earn more downvotes today than I ever have before? Oh well, at least French agrees with me.
Just think about it. You never see anyone drinking wine with pie.
you have to appreciate the irony of your username and Chachis argument...
You do see wine and cheese. And I have heard of people putting cheese on apple pie. Therefore... via transitivity... it could happen.
That was ice cream, not cheese.
Proof- you don't scoop cheese.
I doesn't count for 2 reasons.
1. It was you.
2. It's obvious no one is eating it. No bites or forkfulls missing. It's designed to be grotesque just to try and win a point.
That is a god damned disgrace.
A good cheddar actually pairs well with an apple, but I'm not sure about the pie
You are correct, sir.
I see it's a New England thing. But they don't know how to drink tea either, so I don't know how much they should be trusted with the culinary arts.
Those are found images. I would never treat my apple pie in such a way.
Very good, sir. Your name gets applied to the "Good" column.
Marie Antoinette actually said "let them eat "brioche", which is more like bread than anything else. And since bread is more similar to pie than cake (both have crust, both are soft in the middle, etc) your argument actually is a point for #TeamCake.
Note: Sadly, I actually researched this.
Bread rises. Cake rises.
Pie doesn't rise.
Brioche has a crust because it is a poorly baked butter cake/bread.
Pie shells are intentionally weighted so they don't rise. They have all the ingredients to rise. Brioche is egg bread, not cake.
My point exactly.
CAN'T WE HAVE OUR CAKE AND EAT OUR PIE TOO? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAkbye.
I love Cake and Pie
I won't conform to your groups
Both are delicious
I read about pie
Then I read about some cake
Now I am hungry
For French...
Cheese is the worst.
Rutabaga is the worst. And you can put it in a pie too.
#TeamEatEverything
I seriously love all of you! Jefferson Bakery in Jefferson MD makes a chocolate cake with peanut butter icing...they also fill donuts with the peanut butter icing. They better have that shit in Heaven or I'm not going!
#AllTheDesserts
How this thread makes me feel:
When I eat birthday cake, my RollTides are green. That doesn't happen with pie. Point, pie.
From a chef's perspective, cakes today are made with more processed crap than pies. I love both (and generally stay away from all desserts to preserve my svelt figure), but you're more likely to have a cake made entirely from a box with various forms of over-manipulated corn that your body can't process, thus leading to diabeetus and 'Murica and whatnot. There's nothing wrong with a good, made-from-scratch cake with a real buttercream, but you're more likely to find a pie filling made from scratch.
Choosy chefs choose pie.
Mighty Ducks disagree!
Also, this is getting ridiculous.
However, although I am a pie preferrer, googling 'cake eater' gives more pictures of pretty ladies than googling 'pie eater'.
"googling 'cake eater' gives more pictures of pretty ladies than googling 'pie eater'."
VICTORY!
I'll pose another argument - one that may blow your mind (at least for those from the East coast).
Allow me to introduce the ice-creamed cookie: The Pizookie
Isn't that just a cookie cake?
Half-baked cookie cake. Hot, crusty outside, still doughy, nearly raw on the inside. Delicious.
Topped with ice cream? Please sir may I have another!
Pie? Cake? I I don't care - just make sure there is peanut butter in it!
I'm just glad I got some Pillsbury Halloween Funfetti Cake to munch on after reading all these Cake vs Pie arguments.... Go Team Cake
Ah the humor/horrors of the dreaded bye week.
what is this madness?
Right? All this nonsense about cake and pie but no one is mentioning ice cream. This is madness!
*I just set someone up for an awesome gif
well ok if you insist

Perhaps it could read. This is ICE CREAM! *kicks emissary into a giant vat of B&J's chubby hubby
So I have to confess. I dont know how to make the gifs. Just how to embed them. But that, sir, is an excellent suggestion
Pie rules them all, because chicken pie.
There. It's over.
The only cake that can hold its ground with pie is cheesecake
Thank you!
I DON'T BELIEVE IN LABELS
