Look over here at the pretty pony!
Ok, now I have your attention, what are your favorite movie soundtracks? Here are some of mine.
Flash Gordon (some of Queen's coolest work, even though the movie is wonderfully dreadful.)
Snatch (The Specials, Oasis, I can bathe in it) and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (subtle James Brown, Stone Roses, Dusty Springfield, Stooges, The Castaways... so much good)
Swingers (Roger Miller, Dean Martin, Average White Band, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy)
My pure nostalgia pick: Cocktail- In retrospect, the movie was awful, and most of the songs weren't great. But they were great to a 10 year old with zero pop music influences at that point

Compilation: Dazed and Confused
Composed: what Daft Punk did with Tron: Legacy
TRON: LEGACY is my go to soundtrack when I want to edit something!! Just perfection... Man, now I know what I am listening to on my way home.
via GIPHY
I would even pay money for a second movie if they did the music again
co sign
Creed 1 and 2.
Creed 2 soundtrack was FIRE!!!
This has to be up there for me.
Dances with Wolves. Everyone always talks about "John Williams this" and "Hans Zimmer that" but John Barry may be better than both of them.
And my pure nostalgia pick is Garden State. Still enjoy most of the music on that that track, but I'm basically agnostic now on whether it's actually a good movie
Garden State is a great movie, and definitely has a great soundtrack.
Leonard Approved.
Off the wall one:
Little Miss Sunshine. Most of the music is DeVotchKa. A few other randoms thrown in. It just fits the movie.
Soundtracks or scores? Big difference.
Edit: I'll do both anyway.
Scores:
Soundtracks:
I'm sure I'll think of more.
oh fawk me that Shepard Tone makes playing Dead Space so incredibly anxiety driven
Random story about that, they really use it in Supermarine on the Dunkirk. We were at the beach one day and I had my headphones in reading a magazine on my iPad so I decided to listen to Dunkirk's score. Listening to Supermarine on the beach after seeing that movie with the Mole made it so weird. It felt like the movie was coming to be. It was intense haha.
Hans Zimmer really is in a league of his own when it comes to composing scores. Dunkirk just makes you feel anxious the whole way through. I read he didn't even know what the movie was going to be about when he composed the Interstellar soundtrack, which I find so hard to believe because its perfect for what it was.
Spiderverse soundtrack was perfect
Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Young Guns 2
I will file that in the nostalgia folder. But 1 was a better movie.
Agreed.
As bad as Suicide Squad was, it had a pretty solid soundtrack
via GIPHY
Personally enjoyed the great variety in Baby Driver.
Came to post this. Not only is the music great on its own, the pairing with the scenes (and left ear/roght ear break) is amazing
top gun
Roxette? Terrible. Just like that turd of a movie.
You can hate the movie, but the soundtrack is iconic. For me it is Stand By Me.
Big Lebowski
I dug the soundtrack to Atomic Blonde quite a bit. Friday also has a pretty excellent soundtrack.
Edit - I also really enjoyed the soundtracks to Empire Records and Angus back in the day. Some choice 90's offerings.
Forrest Gump
Remember the Titans
Came here to say Forrest Gump
Came here for Remember the Titans. Sang "Long Cool Woman" for karaoke in Mexico recently...brought the house down *brushes metaphorical dirt of shoulders*
Definitely these two.
Orchestral: Apollo 13, Jurassic Park, Willow, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Back to the Future, Gladiator
Non-orchestral: Guardians of the Galaxy, O Brother Where are Thou, Walk to Remember
FM (although movie was not good.)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
I got the soundtrack for "the big chill" when I was 8 or 9 in my stocking at Christmastime. Still my favorite.
I was coming here to post The Big Chill!
I also must add:
Dirty Dancin'
Lion King
In high school I really liked the Varsity Blues soundtrack
Came here to say Varsity Blues. That movie came out my senior year of high school, so everytime I see the movie or hear a song from the soundtrack it brings back so feels.
Totally agree. It was my senior year too.
Drive
Pulp Fiction
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly/Once Upon a Time in the West
Blade Runner

Citizen Dick
Almost Famous
Seconded, and truly one of the most underrated movies of the past 20 years
xXx Soundtrack
Hatebreed - I will be Heard
Rammstein - Feuer Frei
Drowning Pool - Bodies
Flaw - Get Up Again
Best Action movie soundtrack for metal heads
The soundtrack to xXx is like a very specific time machine. Watched it recently and I would have sworn it was my junior year in high school for about 90 minutes.
The Crow.
Lost in Translation.
We're done here.
Leg for Lost In Translation
and leg for the Crow... I was half-way down the thread saying to myself "how in the hell has nobody mentioned The Cr-"
Space Jam
we not condoning anything with R.Kelly anymore fam.
The Space Jam soundtrack takes me back to my first job. I worked at a day care center. There was a group of little girls who would get in the swings and sing "I Believe I Can Fly" at the top of their lungs, swinging as high as they could.
Rock of Ages
* Drops Mic
The original Power Rangers Movie. First song is "Higher Ground" covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the last song is "Dreams" by Van Halen. Other 90s hits thrown around in the middle too.
An odd favorite- Baseketball
I used to play "Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful" by Nerf Herder as the intro to my college radio show "French on the Bench"
Was waiting for this one
GET YOUR PATCHOULI STINK OUT OF MY STORE!!!
Same Movie!
Beta Band
I'll add Death Wish 2. Movie blows but the song track is all Jimmy Page.
Who's to Blame
The best, I think is Conan the Barbarian. I have always loved that one as background music for just about anything.
The soundtracks I listened to A LOT and enjoyed as a kid, but probably don't stand the test of time would have to be The Crow and Judgement Night.
Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse (aside from being an excellent movie), had a really compelling soundtrack.
One old school one I remember loving in highschool was the Spawn soundtrack
Filter
Crystal Method
Korn
Metallica
Prodigy
Stabbing Westward
Incubus
Soul Coughing
It was like the Family Values tour on a soundtrack
Original: Gladiator and Mad Max: Fury Road
Compilation: Forrest Gump and Guardians of the Galaxy
This is way too old for most of you, but the soundtrack to 'Valley Girl' back in 1994 had some pretty good New Wave music. "I Melt With You" is a classic song.
Dude... Valley Girl was 1983.
DO NOT TAKE my 80's awesomeness away from me. "I Melt With You" is a great song.
Along the same vein, most of the John Hughes flicks in the '80's had some great soundtracks - Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller.
Wow, my bad. I'm older than I thought. Agree on all the Hughes movie soundtracks.
This is a great take. Valley girl soundtrack on point.
Easy answer if you have young kiddos..
Having very young granddaughters it is truly my wish to never hear this sound track again!
That WAS an easy answer until Moana came out. My kids dropped Frozen like a hot potato after that one.
Best original scores: The Last of the Mohicans, The Rock, Crimson Tide, Rudy, The Hunt for Red October, Gettysburg.
Soundtrack: Guardians 1 & 2
What a list...The Rock, Crimson Tide, and Gettysburg...love it!
Leg for Last of the Mohicans. The chase scene along the cliff towards the end. Awesome.
Came here to say last of the mohicans. If you are runner and have a wooded trail to run... do yourself a favor.
just watch out for huron in the woods..... lol
Second for Snatch.

Yes! If for nothing else than the pixies - where is my mind in the final scene.
Came here just to make sure Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels was on here - but you can't leave out the movie (and soundtrack) opening with Ocean Colour Scene.
Atomic Blonde. Taking things back to the glorious 80's.
Chariots of Fire
The Godfather
1998 Godzilla movie was awful. But it did bring us No Shelter by RATM one of my personal favorite songs
Empire Records
I am amending my list to include:
Batman (Prince had some scorchers on that disc.)
Pirate Radio- not much of a movie, but the music was fantastic.
Agree on the first Guardians of the Galaxy
and how could I forget the Iron Eagle soundtrack?
STEVE WINWOOD BABY!
On that note, The Blues Bros.
You beat me to it. The sequel had a pretty legit soundtrack as well.
We have been over this. Iron Eagle's Gimme some Lovin' ain't got shit on Days of Thunder
The punisher also had a alternative version of still running by Chevelle
Totally off the wall... Vision Quest Soundtrack
Vision Quest
HAHAHA I actually thought about throwing this one out there. Mostly because of Lunatic Fringe. But, then I realized, it's mostly because of Lunatic Fringe.
edit: the other songs are fine. But that one is the only reason I know Vision Quest exists.
totally agree...lunatic fringe is a great driving/running jam
Lunatic fringe I know you're out there
The first Rocky score = amazing.
How am I the first one to mention a Scorsese movie? The man is a genius at blending music with his scenes.
Goodfellas- Using the piano exit from Layla during the murder montage was masterful. And the whole soundtrack is perfect.
The Departed- Van Morrison/Roger Waters doing Comfortably Numb was outstanding. Lots of other good stuff in the movie.
Shine a Light- yes, this is cheating since it's a concert movie, but the way Scorsese captures the Stones, and the way they still perform is incredible.
Leg for Goodfellas! One of my two favorites, along with Out Of Africa. Both are absolute perfection.
The Kingdom
Flight of the Navigator.
Mallrats
Score: Taxi Driver
Soundtrack: Kingpin, American Graffiti.
Heavy Metal
I know its not a movie, but I have to give a shout out to Stranger Things here. Both the composed score and the songs used in both series are great
For movies:
For TV Shows:
Well, if you're adding TV shows, I'd add Justified.
Reservoir dogs...if only for "Stuck in the middle with you" straight razor scene. Michael Madsen is masterfully crazy in that.Reservoir Dogs
"Best" might not be the right word, but it's certainly something.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhfnTs0RZLs
What in the blue hell was that?
Atomic Blond
Last of the Mohicans
Doctor Zhivago
Braveheart
Walk the Line
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Waynes World
Forest Gump
Star Wars
LOTR
The Right Stuff soundtrack by Bill Conti
I don't believe I've seen this listed yet...
Because when people think Transformers they think of Michael Bay's abominations....
Transformers: The Movie is fucking awesome!
Poetic Justice, The Bodyguard, The Nutty Professor, Love Jones, Best Man, Back to the Future, Above the Rim, Black Panther, Love and Basketball..
When I was a
adultkid, I loved the Chipmunk Adventure soundtrack...dont ask me why..lolEdit Forgot about my disney ones - Lion King and Aladdin
Home Alone. Best Christmas album of all time.
Trainspotting and Pulp Fiction have great soundtracks...the "surf rock" stuff in Pulp Fiction was a genre I never really knew much about.
For scored films...Lord of the Rings is hard to top.
Krush Groove for old school rap.
Scores:
Batman (89), Star Wars (entire OT), Man of Steel, and Raiders of the Lost Ark
Compilations:
Top Gun, Guardians of the Galaxy,
Honorable Mention: Friday Night Lights and The Karate Kid (the real one)
Ooo Explosions in the Sky on Friday Night Lights is a good one.
Scores:
Just about anything by John Williams
Most things by Hans Zimmer
Dazed and Confused
Waynes World
Lost Boys
Iron Eagle
Rad- If you haven't seen this movie, you need to. It is everything a boy in the 80's wanted to be...and the soundtrack is pretty solid.
Leg for Rad. Not sure on the soundtrack, I can't really remember it, but I LOVED this movie. I had it on tape and must have watched it a 100 times when I was in middle school.
Have Rad on a bootleg DVD, pretty sure I wore out multiple copies at the video store when I was a kid. To this day I can't hear " Send Me an Angel" without picturing the dance scene in my head.
#YoungAuntBecky
"How did this get made" podcast did an episode on Rad. It's a great listen.
Thank you for letting me know about this, it was quite entertaining. The fact that Rod and Rex Reynolds went on to write The Conjouring is my favorite useless fact that I have come across in a long time.
Harry Potter (any of them)
Jurassic Park
Pirates of the Caribbean
Metallica doing Enter Sandman "live" in Lane Stadium in the future movie "Orange and Maroon-The Story of the Hokies First National Championship in College Football!
Anyone else really like what Eddie Vedder did on Into the Wild Soundtrack?
Yes actually, I thought it complemented the movie extremely well.
The Blues Brothers (1980).
The Girl Next Door was a great movie for the eyes and ears
underrated movie....who know that Paul Dano (Klitz) would turn out to be such a great actor..
Lots of great ones on this list. Here's some I don't think I've seen yet and omitting anything by the usual suspects: Hans Zimmer and John Williams.
Pi
Hackers
Blade
Ocean's 11, 12, 13
Chef
Can I count these even though they aren't technically movies?
Peaky Blinders
Sherlock (BBC)
Westworld
Oh absolutely with Westworld. The covers of Paint it Black and C.R.E.A.M. this year alone vaults it to the top of any list.
Agree with lots of scores and soundtracks that have been mentioned (The Crow especially) - and here are a few others for consideration
Scores:
In case anyone forgot, South Park got an academy award nomination for "Blame Canada" and Robin Williams performed it at the oscars.
If we are including scores:
The Grey
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LsYA5UkD9K0
Both Blues Brothers
Forest Gump
Pulp Fiction. I love Tarrantino's use of music in his films. They're like another character. Music in Kill Bill is also excellent!
Best soundtrack of all time is Beetlejuice.
Scores:
Star Wars OT - just as iconic as the movies themselves
The Shawshank Redemption - I shed a manly tear at the end every time, and it's almost entirely because of the immense beauty of the end titles. It sounds like paradise.
LOTR - words defy me here.
The Highlander - Queen, nuff said
Risky Business - Synths aren't my thing usually, but Tangerine Dream's score in this movie just works.
Comps:
Holes - Kinda surprised no one's mentioned this yet, I wore out the CD of this soundtrack when I was a kid. Pretty good movie too.
(500) Days of Summer - It appeals to the angsty hipster in me I guess
The Big Lebowski - The perfect amount of Creedence.
Forrest Gump - The perfect amount of The Doors.
Wayne's World - The way they used "Foxy Lady" alone puts this one in my faves
Risky Business - "In The Air Tonight" on the train. Again, nuff said.
Leg for Forrest Gump and Risky Business. I love Old Time Rock and Roll
Noon of y'all have said it, so fine.
Titanic
I'll switch it up, 2 Fast 2 Furious
Judgement Night - was a revolutionary album at the time. Blend of mid 90s grunge and mid 90s Rap. No radio hits, but was a noteworthy sound track.
I kept the Judgement Night Soundtrack on repeat back then. You beat me to it. I'm surprised nobody else said it. Also, don't sleep on The Neverending Story. They did a great job matching up the music to the emotion of the film. Right up there with Peter Gabriel's work on The Last Temptation of Christ.
Not a movie but listening to the Band of Brothers score and it's amazing.
Can't Hardly Wait is the soundtrack of my youth
Good Morning, Viet Nam
It's not close.
Goodfellas. Goodfellas. Goodfellas.
Every soundtrack I would list has already been listed, but I came here to say this. I watched Gleaming the Cube on Prime last night and there is something that movies since the 80s are sorely missing, a cheesy-ass title track. Some where obviously better than others, e.g. Ghostbusters, but even the ones that were terrible like Gleaming the Cube were so terrible and cheesy that they were friggin' comedic gold.
I'm a little late to this conversation, but really? no love for any Disney soundtrack? The Lion King!! We all know every word to about 3 lion king songs, yet no one says the Lion King. And Elton John is amazing.
Also, no love for Whitney and the Bodyguard? That whole movie was produced just for the tracks.
Sad.
I put Lion King in my list.
Not Another Teen Movie
-Prom Tonight (feat Captain America & the other girl from the main cast of Grey's Anatomy)
1 -
I mean you were right, but come on, it was right there
2 -

I know. I was too lazy.
Fun fact - I went to elementary school with the other girl from the main cast of Grey's Anatomy
You went to elementary school with Janey Briggs?
Yes, also of That 80's Show fame. She moved away in 5th grade to start her modeling/acting career.
Lots of good ones mentioned already, but didn't see these.
Harold and Maude which featured Cat Stevens.
I also really like listening to the Midnight in Paris soundtrack while working. The light-hearted instrumentals help reduce the rage that comes from using Solidworks.
