Best Movie Soundtracks

Look over here at the pretty pony!

Ok, now I have your attention, what are your favorite movie soundtracks? Here are some of mine.

Flash Gordon (some of Queen's coolest work, even though the movie is wonderfully dreadful.)

Snatch (The Specials, Oasis, I can bathe in it) and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (subtle James Brown, Stone Roses, Dusty Springfield, Stooges, The Castaways... so much good)

Swingers (Roger Miller, Dean Martin, Average White Band, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy)

My pure nostalgia pick: Cocktail- In retrospect, the movie was awful, and most of the songs weren't great. But they were great to a 10 year old with zero pop music influences at that point

Creed 1 and 2.

Born in Charlottesville, Reborn in Blacksburg

Creed 2 soundtrack was FIRE!!!

This has to be up there for me.

Dances with Wolves. Everyone always talks about "John Williams this" and "Hans Zimmer that" but John Barry may be better than both of them.

And my pure nostalgia pick is Garden State. Still enjoy most of the music on that that track, but I'm basically agnostic now on whether it's actually a good movie

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

Garden State is a great movie, and definitely has a great soundtrack.

Leonard Approved.

Leonard. Duh.

Off the wall one:
Little Miss Sunshine. Most of the music is DeVotchKa. A few other randoms thrown in. It just fits the movie.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Soundtracks or scores? Big difference.

Edit: I'll do both anyway.

Scores:

  • The Social Network. I still listen to this score to this day. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are incredible.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road. Junkie XL blew me away. His instrumentation matches the movie so well. COMA DOOF WARRIOR.
  • Dunnkirk. Click this.

Soundtracks:

  • Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. Vince Staples track bangs.
  • Black Panther.

I'm sure I'll think of more.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

oh fawk me that Shepard Tone makes playing Dead Space so incredibly anxiety driven

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Random story about that, they really use it in Supermarine on the Dunkirk. We were at the beach one day and I had my headphones in reading a magazine on my iPad so I decided to listen to Dunkirk's score. Listening to Supermarine on the beach after seeing that movie with the Mole made it so weird. It felt like the movie was coming to be. It was intense haha.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Hans Zimmer really is in a league of his own when it comes to composing scores. Dunkirk just makes you feel anxious the whole way through. I read he didn't even know what the movie was going to be about when he composed the Interstellar soundtrack, which I find so hard to believe because its perfect for what it was.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Spiderverse soundtrack was perfect

Big Lebowski

I dug the soundtrack to Atomic Blonde quite a bit. Friday also has a pretty excellent soundtrack.

Edit - I also really enjoyed the soundtracks to Empire Records and Angus back in the day. Some choice 90's offerings.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

The best, I think is Conan the Barbarian. I have always loved that one as background music for just about anything.

It was a catch!

You wanna come to a super soft birthday party?

This is way too old for most of you, but the soundtrack to 'Valley Girl' back in 1994 had some pretty good New Wave music. "I Melt With You" is a classic song.

Dude... Valley Girl was 1983.

DO NOT TAKE my 80's awesomeness away from me. "I Melt With You" is a great song.

Along the same vein, most of the John Hughes flicks in the '80's had some great soundtracks - Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller.

Leonard. Duh.

Wow, my bad. I'm older than I thought. Agree on all the Hughes movie soundtracks.

This is a great take. Valley girl soundtrack on point.

How am I the first one to mention a Scorsese movie? The man is a genius at blending music with his scenes.

Goodfellas- Using the piano exit from Layla during the murder montage was masterful. And the whole soundtrack is perfect.

The Departed- Van Morrison/Roger Waters doing Comfortably Numb was outstanding. Lots of other good stuff in the movie.

Shine a Light- yes, this is cheating since it's a concert movie, but the way Scorsese captures the Stones, and the way they still perform is incredible.

Leg for Goodfellas! One of my two favorites, along with Out Of Africa. Both are absolute perfection.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

Rad- If you haven't seen this movie, you need to. It is everything a boy in the 80's wanted to be...and the soundtrack is pretty solid.

Leg for Rad. Not sure on the soundtrack, I can't really remember it, but I LOVED this movie. I had it on tape and must have watched it a 100 times when I was in middle school.

Have Rad on a bootleg DVD, pretty sure I wore out multiple copies at the video store when I was a kid. To this day I can't hear " Send Me an Angel" without picturing the dance scene in my head.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Agree with lots of scores and soundtracks that have been mentioned (The Crow especially) - and here are a few others for consideration

  • Last Action Hero (soundtrack was waaaaaay better than the movie... which I also thought was decent)
  • South Park - Bigger, Longer, Uncut
  • The Matrix
  • Resident Evil
  • Escape from LA
  • Rock Star

Scores:

  • Blade Runner
  • Interstellar
  • Inception
  • any of the LOTR
  • The Dark Knight

In case anyone forgot, South Park got an academy award nomination for "Blame Canada" and Robin Williams performed it at the oscars.

Both Blues Brothers
Forest Gump
Pulp Fiction. I love Tarrantino's use of music in his films. They're like another character. Music in Kill Bill is also excellent!

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Best soundtrack of all time is Beetlejuice.

Scores:

Star Wars OT - just as iconic as the movies themselves
The Shawshank Redemption - I shed a manly tear at the end every time, and it's almost entirely because of the immense beauty of the end titles. It sounds like paradise.
LOTR - words defy me here.
The Highlander - Queen, nuff said
Risky Business - Synths aren't my thing usually, but Tangerine Dream's score in this movie just works.

Comps:

Holes - Kinda surprised no one's mentioned this yet, I wore out the CD of this soundtrack when I was a kid. Pretty good movie too.
(500) Days of Summer - It appeals to the angsty hipster in me I guess
The Big Lebowski - The perfect amount of Creedence.
Forrest Gump - The perfect amount of The Doors.
Wayne's World - The way they used "Foxy Lady" alone puts this one in my faves
Risky Business - "In The Air Tonight" on the train. Again, nuff said.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:

Judgement Night - was a revolutionary album at the time. Blend of mid 90s grunge and mid 90s Rap. No radio hits, but was a noteworthy sound track.

I kept the Judgement Night Soundtrack on repeat back then. You beat me to it. I'm surprised nobody else said it. Also, don't sleep on The Neverending Story. They did a great job matching up the music to the emotion of the film. Right up there with Peter Gabriel's work on The Last Temptation of Christ.

Not a movie but listening to the Band of Brothers score and it's amazing.

Can't Hardly Wait is the soundtrack of my youth

Good Morning, Viet Nam

It's not close.

Goodfellas. Goodfellas. Goodfellas.

Every soundtrack I would list has already been listed, but I came here to say this. I watched Gleaming the Cube on Prime last night and there is something that movies since the 80s are sorely missing, a cheesy-ass title track. Some where obviously better than others, e.g. Ghostbusters, but even the ones that were terrible like Gleaming the Cube were so terrible and cheesy that they were friggin' comedic gold.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

I'm a little late to this conversation, but really? no love for any Disney soundtrack? The Lion King!! We all know every word to about 3 lion king songs, yet no one says the Lion King. And Elton John is amazing.

Also, no love for Whitney and the Bodyguard? That whole movie was produced just for the tracks.

Sad.

Harold and Maude which featured Cat Stevens.

I also really like listening to the Midnight in Paris soundtrack while working. The light-hearted instrumentals help reduce the rage that comes from using Solidworks.
