OT: let's talk about Alliance of American Football

I haven't seen anything posted on it so far, my apologies if it is covered elsewhere.

So far I see James Clark and Colton Taylor as former Hokies signed to contract. I may have missed others, and more folks are being added still.

Anyone planning on checking this out or does everyone believe it will be another XFL? With the first game starting on February 9th, it may be a great way to extend that football fix.

I also wonder if the NFL has gotten so stale that it might be a great time for a little competition? Personally, I haven't watched the NFL in over 2 years. Going back further, I mostly watched for fantasy football. Guess I'm just over it.

I'll definitely be tuning in to see how Michael Vick does as an OC.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

"What do you mean you can't just juke every pass rusher and flick the ball 60 yards downfield?"

-Michael Vick, probably

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Looks like Atlanta also has Andrew Matuapuaka and Dadi on their roster. The league has some decent college players on their rosters. Will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

Taylor Colton the former long snapper is on the team in Salt Lake City.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I thought Moto looked good for JAX in the preseason, but at his size he was going to have to look amazing to stay on an NFL roster. If the league lasts, my guess is he will be able to hold his spot. Same could be said for Dadi, just not up to NFL size, but still a good player off the edge.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Guess we know which team all of us will be pulling for.

Apparently each team has a territory it can pick from that includes former players from at least 1 CFL team, 4 NFL teams and at least five universities.

Atlanta's full territorial list is as follows:

  • Albany State
  • Clark Atlanta
  • Clemson
  • Fort Valley State
  • Georgia
  • Georgia Southern
  • Georgia State
  • Georgia Tech
  • Kennesaw State
  • Louisville
  • Mercer
  • Morehouse
  • North Carolina
  • Savannah State
  • Shorter
  • Valdosta State
  • Virginia
  • Virginia Tech
  • West Georgia
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Carolina Panthers
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Washington Redskins
  • Toronto Argonauts

Dadi, 'Drew and James Clark are all currently on Atlanta's roster.

Some of the other teams are fairly hodgepodge for their territories while others pull almost exclusively from one state + a few teams from neighboring states. If you're curious about a specific team (either AAF or a 'territorial team'), ask and I'll share otherwise this'll get long winded quick.

Well how does that work if say a guy went to Oregon, and then played for the Chiefs and Giants in the Niffle?

My guess is it's the last team he played snaps with but I don't know that for certain.

Last team Oregon: Territorial rights to Salt Lake
Last team Kansas City: Territorial rights to San Antonio
Last team Giants: Territorial rights to Orlando

Since there's only 32 NFL teams and 9 CFL teams, I'll go ahead and list territorial rights for those. But college teams? They've got I-A and I-AA teams. That's a lot of teams to have rights to >.>

Atlanta Legends: Falcons, Panthers, Jaguars, Redskins, Toronto Argonauts

Arizona Hotshots: Cardinals, Ravens, Bears, 49ers, Edmonton Eskimos

Birmingham Iron: Patriots, Bills, Browns, Steelers, Montreal Alouettes, Ottowa Redblacks

Memphis Express: Bengals, Colts, Saints, Titans, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Orlando Apollos: Dolphins, Giants, Jets, Buccaneers, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Salt Lake Stallions: Broncos, Packers, Vikings, Seahawks, Calgary Stampeders

San Antonio Commanders: Cowboys, Texans, Chiefs, Eagles, Saskatchewan Roughriders

San Diego Fleet: Rams, Chargers, Raiders, Lions, British Columbia Lions

Interesting, thank you!

Other notable players: Aaron Murray QB, Trevor Knight QB, Nick Novak K, Christian Hackenberg QB

Nick Novak is my shortcut for 6 degrees of separation. We were in youth group together growing up.

The #1 QB drafted in the Alliance was Josh Johnson, but he's starting for Washington today!

I'm looking forward to this league. Spurrier is coaching in Orlando. That's reason enough to tune in, IMO.

Are rosters finalized yet? I kinda feel like this league might be a good opportunity for Trevon Hill to prep for the NFL draft, if he's eligible.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Hill still has a year of eligibility left, so if he can manage to graduate in the spring it'll probably be in his best interest to transfer to another P5 school to showcase his talents.

Anybody watching this inaugural game of the AAF on CBS? It is San Diego vs San Antonio. San Antonio's uniforms look vaguely like the Hokie's and a San Antonio safety just had a very Hokie like interception return for 60-70 yards.

I was going to and then I realized Vick is no longer Offensive Coordinator and no Hokies are on their squad. I fact I think the only Hokie still playing in the AAF is Taylor Colton.

It's legit football in February..... And we have to survive the off season somehow. And it is much more interesting than that waste of 3.5 hours last Sunday that was the Super Bowl.

I'm just enjoying watching Steve Spurrier coach again.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

This has been much better than I expected!

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

I expected the worst quality wise but this isn't bad. The passing game needs LOTS of work but there are some hints of some good football here.

I'm just grateful that there is football on my tv.

Edited for grammar. Offseason brain.

Sorry I am a teacher, I had to fix it.

This is what happens when you give kindergarten teachers wine and too much free time.

You are trifling!

This sounds too familiar...

Woo! Fake Hokies got a TD!

And the Fake Hokies essentially end the game on a interception in the end zone. And they played "We Ready" afterwards.

I checked out the AAF rosters to see if Jerrod Evans showed up. Nope. If he can't make the three QB deep roster in the AAF I think we can put a stake through the heart of any NFL shot completely. Ah, what could have been for the Hokies and Jerrod with another year...........

The LewDew, Professional Golf Bum

You should check for Jerod

I hate any post that says:

- "Let's talk about..." / "Can we talk about..." / "Why isn't anyone talking about..."
- "Am I the only one..."
- "Why you should care about...."

John Wolford is showing out along with Ross. I'm surprised he hadn't stuck on a practice squad. Guy started 40+ games and set a bunch of records at Wake.

Looks a little cheesy; Todd Washington is the oline coach

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

I watched most of two games over the weekend. I have to say I was pretty impressed so far. Offense was lacking at various points, but apparently they've only been practicing together for a few weeks so I have to think that will come around as chemistry develops. I did expect it to feel more odd not having kick-offs/PATs but I didn't notice as much as I anticipated. I enjoyed the pace of play as well. Mostly, I just really enjoyed having Football in mid-February.

What a savings

AAF receives $250m investment from Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon, who will become league chairman

The Athletic reported that the league was in danger of not making payroll on Friday, before Dundon's investment. AAF co-founder Charlie Ebersol dismissed reports that the Alliance was getting a financial bailout from Dundon.

"As a lifelong sports fan and entrepreneur, I've always valued the opportunities generated in the ecosystem of sports and entertainment," Dundon said in a statement released by the AAF. "I'm impressed with The Alliance's stunning growth in-stadium and across TV, mobile and social media in just these first few weeks."
