Andy Bitter interviewed the Frankinator, asked some tough questions, and it seemed a little "chippy" at times. Read the entire thing, but here's what caught my eye: Beamer returned his $75,000 bowl bonus, the staff is focused on recruiting, like everyone else he thought Coale made the catch, and he knows the special teams need to be fixed. Most importantly, he's softened his stance on playing after only five days rest.

Overall, though, would you been opposed to playing that kind of game with such short rest before the following week?

"The one thing that I think that you want is for the game to be at home. When you're the visiting team and you're not getting in here until early the next day and trying to get ready for another game, time-wise it hurts and rest-wise it hurts. And if you're going to do something like that, you want that next game at home."

I've heard nothing factual to back up this claim, but I expect us to play on Labor Day, and then against Austin Peay the following Saturday.

No one knows anything until letters of intent are signed and faxed to schools. But these guys know more than most, and all six believe Joel Caleb will end up at Virginia Tech.

Hoops. Conference wins on the road against ranked teams are the ones that get teams invited to the dance. Starting out 0-4 in ACC play keeps you out of it. No matter how disastrous the season is, beating Virginia is always sweet. Zo Hudson had just 29 total points, shot 32% and missed eight three-balls against Wake, FSU and BC. Seth relegated him to the bench for UNC and since then he's caught fire. Against UNC and UVa he shot 64%, drained 5 of 7 threes and scored 28 points. Against a lot of adversity, he stepped up. I'll be more inclined to believe this is a turnaround if we beat BYU and win at Maryland before hosting Duke.

For the most part, filling the holes on the 2012 depth chart will be pretty straightforward. Davis, Coles and Roberts will try to replace Coale and Boykin, Tech's two most productive receivers ever. The bulk of the carries will be Michael Holmes and J.C. Coleman's to lose. Lil' Wang, Benedict, Via and Becton will be tops on the o-line heading into spring. By consensus, and even though it lost more players, the offense seems pretty figured out. How it plays out on defense is more interesting to me. G-W, Tweedy, Nick Dew and perhaps an incoming player like Trey Edmunds will battle it out at Whip. G-W played much better in 2011 than he did in '10 before he got injured, but he still wasn't the big-time playmaker that we've seen at Whip. Can Bonner, Jarrett or Farrow step up at corner to free up Fuller to move elsewhere? Will either Corey Marshall or Luther Maddy be able to leap Antoine Hopkins?

There'll be balloons, cake, pin the tail on the donkey. The #newhoos are at it again. I just hope they shoot a promotional video as asinine as "All of the Hoos" or "I Pledge" for my entertainment.

Defensive

I don't think the depth chart at DT will mean very much because of how much we rotate the d-line. Whip will come down to G-W or Tweedy. The secondary is the only D concern in my opinion. Fuller and Exum are the only proven DBs, so we'll need Bonner and somebody else to step up bigtime.

ATH Joel Caleb

Also, does anybody know for sure where Joel Caleb would be playing if we landed him? I've heard conflicting things as far as WR or S. He could get playing time right away at safety.

From what I read he wants to play offense

I believe that the coaches are recruiting him as a WR and that is where he wants to play from what i've read.

What little I've heard

From what little news I have heard, most of it being from this site and my Twitter feed, Caleb does not want to play defense at the collegiate level (so WR). ESPN was claiming that WVU became his dream school after the Orange Bowl because they threw so many TD's on Clemson's defense and he even spoke about it to a CFB Writer for some local paper (forgive me but I cannot remember if it was the Richmond Times or a West Virginia paper). For what it's worth that was before his OV. After some basic research of WVU fan boards they were really stoked with his visit for what that's worth (both him and his mother were impressed with WVU and I cannot find much on his VT visit yet). Here is the link to an overall search:

Honestly, my two cents, I personally don't think it looks good but that is why we brought Shane into the fold- to close out situations like this.

He's being recruited as a receiver.

And that's what he wants to play in college. Receiver is definitely going to be a position of need for the 2013 class.

Bonner had a few good plays in the ACCCG, otherwise Watkins mauled him. Nonetheless, it was good experience for him. Hadn't Fuller been playing in some other spots giving Hill some time? I think he's ready to step up.

whatevs

all 6 rivals analyst project VT to land caleb and so is scout .. espn are the only homers spinning the wvu thing .. i wouldn't expect caleb to bad-mouth them. think it's up in the air but our chances are good with him

they say that ekanem is now leaning towards vt pretty heavy

kirven is the only one that looks to be a big ?? at this point i think

caleb is being recruited to play WR -- that's where he'll play, regardless of where he goes.

everyone gets mauled by watkins

Oy

I hope so- would hate to lose a recruit like Caleb (not saying he's the next Jerry Rice, but a top rated in-stater) to WVU. I could stomach it more when some went to Florida, Ohio State, Michigan (back in the day), or a SEC school but not WVU. Not only as a rival but their "tradition" is similar to ours and, if I am not mistaken, we put many more players in the NFL than they do on an annual basis.

Whip

I'm really hoping we can get nick dew on the field. The kid has a lot of talent and hustle. Once he gets playing time I feel like he could be a star.

Dew or Ronny VanDyke

Three reasons I hope Dew or VanDyke take over at whip this spring.
1) They're the most athletic (besides K Fuller) at that Whip size, and thus should be able to get to the run and cover athletic TEs. JGW and Tweedy are just average.
2)Kyle Fuller should be in the defensive backfield. We need turnovers.
3) They're younger, so VT can get experience for the Nat. Champ run in 2013-14...

Okay, this may be a little far fetched, but if we get some young talent in the Whip position, every defensive position will return with great experience in 2013. (I also am assuming nobody leaves for the NFL early. I think only K Fuller has the combination of size and talent for an early departure, but I don't think he would...) Only seniors in 2012 are Hopkins, Taylor, and JGW/Tweedy. If Maddy, Tyler and Dew/VanDyke win out the starting positions, VT could return 11 starters in 2013, many with 3 years of starting experience...

Also

I secretly hope the O-line is composed of all Jrs/Sophs, but I'm pretty sure Becton will start at LT, so at least 1 SR will start in 2012. The other tackle position is wide open, so please seize the opportunity Gibson/Shuman. We'll see what shakes out in the spring.

Nat. Champ run 2013-2014

I'm just trying to clarify something..you're anticipating a "Nat. Champ run in 2013-14" with a brand new quarterback?

And losing our top three WRs next year?

And playing Alabama.... My guess is that 2013 is not the year

The recipe is brewing for 2013

Offensive Reasons:
1. LT3 will be a senior. I don't think he's leaving early, but its way too early to gauge.
2. The O-line should have plenty of experience at C, RG, and LG... Hopefully T too.
3. 3 Great Rbs on the team.
4. WR is the easiest position to reload. As long as LT3 and the receivers work in the offseason

Defensive Reasons:
1.Every position will have an experienced starter, except whip... This is why I want Dew or VanDyke to start this year.
2. Kyle Fuller does not leave early because he wants to play one year with his brother Kendall

Special Teams Reasons:
1. Hopefully 2012 will be the year VT will rebuild special teams and continue to improve into 2013.

Alabama:
According to their Rivals website depth chart, NO underclassmen started this year on defense. Only McCarren and two offensive linemen were sophomores.... So, we really have no idea what they'll put on the field in 2013, but I'm sure they'll be good. But so will VT.

Defensively next year is our best shot at the National Championship. But there are just too many question marks offensively,

Trust

The younger kids have more upside, but I'd still put my money on G-W starting in 2012. Whenever I've heard Foster talking about replacing a starter at Whip he mentions he has to trust that player. A primary goal of the defense is to funnel the ball carrier to the Whip who has the opportunity to make, or break, a lot of plays. I think the staff trusts G-W the most. Beamer declared The Hyphen was the starter and there wouldn't be a 50/50 split with Tweedy. Then when Tweedy went down Dew played vary sparingly (4 snaps UVA, 3 snaps UNC, 0 snaps GT, 8 snaps Duke) and instead we kicked Fuller down to Whip.

Also, Tweedy is pretty fast.

Also will

have a lot to do with how G-W comes back off of a pretty serious injury as well

2013 not far fetched

some analysts are already expecting big things from VT two seasons from now .. if LT stays .. This next season is only his 3rd year of eligibility used, so he'll have one more season after that if he decides to stay. It probably depends a lot of his development this next season and other QBs coming out too. We'll be stacked again on D in '13-'14. We'll have some consistency/experience at RB and lose very little on the lines. The big question marks for that season:

Will Logan Thomas stay?
Wide Receiver depth/experience

Some of these young guys need some playing time next season. Asante, Corey Fuller ... Looking at the WR depth chart, I barely know anything about any of 'em past Coles/Roberts/Davis and they're all gone after next season.

If they land Caleb, in my opinion, they SHOULD NOT redshirt him.

With a VERY experienced team, on both sides of the ball -- if they can beat Alabama in the first game, VT will immediately be on everyone's radar. Not that it means shit, but I'd expect them to be a preseason top 5 before the '13 season just for the sake of hype. I'd agree that '13-'14 could be the last best shot CFB has for a Natty.

2012 -- far fetched but possible

i won't jinx next season by making some ridiculous fucking statement about us going to the natty next season ... but shit does happen

Things in our favor:
- sick-ass defense
- a great qb (and i'm not being a silly homer->when the whole country is wow'ed by LT, you know he's the real deal)
- a good enough SOS, but not overbearing
- experience at wr
- sick-ass defense

Things working against us:
- running back
- OL

I think that RB could be a push. Losing DW is hard, but we have stallions in the stable and RB is one of the easiest positions on the field to learn. It's a natural position. Let's not forget what RW did when he stepped in for DE after he blew his knee out. If the OL can grant a miracle and work together, it can be good enough.

Most national championship teams usually have those special "things" about them. It's rarely just a black-and-white -- this team was that much better than that team. With Bama this season, it was their D. With Auburn, it was Cam Newton. With LSU, it was their D. With TX, it was Vince Young

We'll have a great defense and a great QB -- the two things that CAN make the rest of a team's weaknesses disappear
