How the hell is Gundy getting the same odds as Taggart?

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

Because T. Boone Pickens, OSU's biggest booster, does not get along with Gundy, or at least Pickens believes that the team should be better than they are and he'd finance a new coach immediately if he thought it would give them a shot at a championship.

They've been more cordial lately, but Pickens is 90(+?), so he might be willing to dump all of his money into OSU for a new coach to see a championship before he dies.

Pickens is dead

That would require fan base expectations. That would require a fan base. See: Number of fans at Spring Festival. Al Groh damn near got a decade.

Spring Festival? They throw a bonaroo or something?

No, because that would be well attended. They thought they could dupe their "fanbase" by calling it such it would be filled. But they figured out the ruse.

Like it or not, Mendenhall is doing a bang up job right now. He won 7 games last year with a pretty low level group of kids from a talent perspective and because of that the recruiting is on an upward trend. He established culture early, took his lumps early, and now it seems as if he is beginning to right the ship.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Having no fan expectations helps, too.

It does... But most LOLUVA fans I know are expecting 10 wins. Anything less and they will be doubting Bronco.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Sounds like a sucker bet based on the offseason media coverage. This schedule + Fuente's buyout makes this a very unlikely fire.

I'm going to preface this counterpoint by saying I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell it happens, I'm just playing devil's advocate, but...

With Bud leaving, if we had a terrible season, I do think it makes the possibility of canning CJF just a smidgen better. As in the snowball would last .01 seconds instead of .0001.

If you play it, they will win.

Even as the favorite, Helton seems like a good bet. They have stanford and Uw in their first 6 games. If they start 1-2 with a loss to BYU I could see it.

It's an interesting dynamic. AD Lynn Swann is a supporter of Helton, but he's on the hot seat too. So there's a lot of pressure cooker scenarios in LA this fall. I don't expect Helton to be coaching in 2020. The question will be is he or Lynn Swann the first to go and does either happen mid-season.

Not with his buyout and this soft schedule.

I think the 2020-2021 season is make or break for Fu.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

If he makes it through the year, I don't think he'll be in hot water. He will have a ridiculous like 16 seniors next year, barring transfers/NFL departures and will be one of the most experienced ACC squads with some ridiculous raw talent.

Outspoken team cake advocate. Hates terrapins. Resident Macho Man Gif Poster. Distant cousin to Dork Magic. Frequently misspells words.

I'm not saying he won't have a good team, more that this year is a poor measuring stick due to the soft schedule.

He could lose his way into a hot seat if this season goes poorly, but I'd be surprised (and candidly disappointed) if he goes 10-2 and Whit extends him.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Tough crowd around here. I'm starting to think we're beset by delusional fans.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Victim of my own hyperbole here, but my point remains.

The average S&P (projected) ranking of our opponents this year is 60, and that doesn't include Furman and Rhode Island, who Bill Connelly didn't even bother to rank.

There are two teams inside the top 41: Miami and ND. The average with the two of them removed is 71!

Beating up on the worst schedule in the FBS P5 will not impress me.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Beating up on the worst schedule in the FBS will not impress me.

Hilariously far from the truth. I only had to guess at one FBS team to find one with a schedule significantly worse than ours: UMass. They play 2 teams better than #80 (#50 BYU, #57 NW), with an average of 89.16. That is the definition of a "bad FBS schedule". I'm sure with time I could find at least a couple dozen other FBS teams with worse schedules than us.

Worst in P5? Sure, but still probably not by much. Worst in FBS? Not a chance.

I meant P5, not FBS.

Chill.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Counter point to strength of schedule at this point in the year, it's only projected based on last years metrics. If everyone we play is better than expected this year than our SOS will rise as the numbers shake out in real time and this discussion will have been pointless.

That's not hilarious. That's sad.

Free Hugh

The actual average S&P+ ranking of UVA's regular season opponents last year was 67. Yet a bunch of posters seem to be pretty impressed with Bronco going 7-5 against their dog shit schedule and are ready to proclaim UVA is on the rise.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

So...you're saying you're not impressed by UVA beating up on really bad teams?

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I know you're being intentionally obtuse to try and make Hammer's point look ridiculous because that's kind of your thing, but in doing so you look ridiculous-er. Not a single word in your second sentence is true.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Not on here, but plenty of people are buying into UVA based on their performance last year.

And laughing at that is exactly my point.

I don't see how VT winning a bunch of games this year should win people over. The schedule is horrendously bad.

I don't think he should necessarily be fired if he doesn't win 8+ games or whatever the magic number is, but I also don't think we should give him an extension & make buying him out more difficult if he does what should be expected this year...which is whip up on bad teams.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Ah, I see. I don't venture outside TKP for college football news. If I can't learn it here, I just don't care.

All that aside, I actually agree with you. We shouldn't be making any major decisions on Fu's future based on this season.

You apparently have not watched ACCN yet...

The amount of love for Clemson and UVA makes a Hokie want to vomit. I assume this a result of current circumstance as they are the best and a "hot" team in football, respectively. My guess, even though bball hasn't been discussed much yet on ACCN, UVA basketball is prompting high praise for the school in general.

I don't see how VT winning a bunch of games this year should win people over. The schedule is horrendously bad.

I'll just say this- I'm not sure that VT has done a whole lot since 2004 other than beat up on the ACC coastal and win games we were favored to win. We got the one win against Ohio State but there's a reason our horrendous record against top 5 teams gets brought up every time we play one.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Yea but we're saying the same thing. Don't buy into VT just because we win a lot of games against an easy schedule

Free Hugh

What are some objective achievements that would make you buy into VT?

In a typical season, even Top 15 teams lose a head scratcher to a conference opponent. Regardless of the projected schedule quality, I'd feel very optimistic about VT moving forward if we went 10-2 and didn't drop a game to Furman, Rhode Island, or ODU.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Absolutely not lose to ODU, Furman, or Rhode Island. Those are deadly sins and inexcusable embarrassments on school.

I expect us to win at least 7 games. I will be excited if we win 10 or more games.

Free Hugh

Seriously? You haven't seen a single post on TKP where someone has said UVA is "trending up" and VT is "trending down"? Literally you only have to scroll up about 20 posts to find an example.

Apparently my point wasn't very clear but it's my observation that many posters are holding Fuente to a far higher standard than they do other teams. 10-2 is nothing to scoff at if you're playing a P5 conference schedule. Nobody has advocated signing Fuente to a lifetime deal regardless of our results this season; however, if we want to attract a high quality DC and not provide negative recruiting material about the stability of our program, it makes sense to show continued commitment if we have success on the field this year. It could be worthwhile to add another year and find some middle ground on reducing the buyout.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

A few remarks in a few comments here and there isn't the same as "proclaiming." Makes it sound like we're preaching the gospel of the Hoos, which why would we do that, we're Hokie fans. If anything it seems like we're downplaying their potential for success on here, which we would do, because we're Hokie fans.

Most people seem to only be considering them in the context of our game with them, and the potential for it to be a key Coastal matchup, at least as far as I've seen.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

If Fuente gets a "school-friendly" extension where we tack on some years but the buyout isn't insanely high, I wouldn't hate it but I don't want to hitch our wagon to him just yet.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Yikes... 10-2 and you would be disappointed with an extension? I'd say 10-2 show stability at the very least and progress at the very best. I'm not bullish on Fuente right now, but I'd be ecstatic with a 10-2 football season, and I suspect Whit would be as well.

Is coronavirus over yet?

We have literally the weakest FBS P5 schedule , I'll reserve my judgement for next year.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

We have the weakest Power 5 schedule. There are weaker schedules.

My bad, edited.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

No problem. A little embarrassing, but I will gladly play URI every year rather than play ECU ever again.

Agreed.

I just don't like the fact that along with URI, the only other games we had any say in who we played this year ended up with Furman and ODU. 3 absolute throwaway games that aren't going to drive ticket sales, and would legitimately hurt a playoff contender in making that Top 4 (not that we are going to challenge that this year). I am totally on board with cutting off all ties with ECU, but I would hope in the future we aren't going to be putting together OOC jokes like this.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

We've scheduled the following P5 OOC games (not to mention ND every 2-3 years):

2020 - Penn State
2021 - WVU
2022 - WVU
2023 - Purdue, Rutgers (not impressive, but two B1G schools nonetheless)
2024 - Rutgers
2025 - Penn State
2026 - Maryland
2027 - Maryland
2028 - Maryland
2029 - Maryland, Arizona
2030 - Arizona
2031 - Wisconsin
2032 - Wisconsin

I doubt we'll have another season without a non-ND P5 opponent any time soon.

Didn't we have someone else in there, who ended up pulling out?

Michigan maybe?

Having WVU, Wisco is great.

UMD makes sense, AZ is kind of random but cool.

Purdue/Rutgers don't move the dial much for me but they're better than directional state unis.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Yeah, Michigan pulled out of our series, since (IIRC) they had a full slate of 3 P5 OOC games scheduled in addition to a 9-game B1G schedule one of the years, and it wouldn't surprise me if ours was the cheapest one to cancel.

Also, the Wisconsin series may not ever be played, at one point it was scheduled for 2008/09, then was postponed to 2016/17, then again to 2024/25, then finally to 2031/32 when Bama came calling and wanted to schedule a series with them in 2024/25. It's kind of a running joke at this point.

Yeah, which is a bummer - I definitely want to get to Madison for a game.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Yep, agreed and I'm thankful for that.

I'm also very annoyed that we have yet another long series with a middling program underway with ODU. I don't care that we're playing someone of that lowly caliber, but man, it really would be nice to mix it up and see some variety in these schedules again. I legitimately miss the days where we would play someone like directional Michigan, Ohio, Marshall, etc. Seeing ECU every year in the past and ODU pretty much every year going forward gets old in a hurry.

They are lowly caliber. They were one of the worst FBS programs last year. They got knob-smacked by Liberty right before we played them.

The fact we lost to them says more about us than them.

Lose to ODU again and that goes up to 2-1

You gonna donate the $12.5 million buyout?

I donate every year, so maybe part of it... that buyout is peanuts when it comes down to it. Especially going into a re-seating year and major push to sell season tickets... Lose to ODU again, he's toast.

This is our annual reminder that if we think we've got a buyout problem, Jimbo Fisher could have lost every game he ever coached and made $75mm.

It's actually still $15 million until December 15th.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Yeah there is no way that Fuente's seat is as hot as Ed Ogerons. LSU fired some one with a 77% winning percentage and a national title.

Malzahn and Orgeron are always going to be contenders since the Auburn and LSU fan bases are perpetually unhappy unless they are beating Alabama and winning titles. Sumlin seems like the value pick considering his stint at Arizona has been a train wreck so far. He tanked Khalil Tate's Heisman campaign before it even got off the ground last year, lost to some of the worst teams in the PAC-12, and just started off his second season with an embarrassing loss to Hawaii.

So you're telling me there's a chance?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I'll take the field over Fuente.

Three words.
Not. Gonna. Happen.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

One difference between Fuente and most of these other coaches is that Fuente is 3-0 against his main rival. Or as Lavar Ball might say....

Beating UVA should be a given, not a measuring stick.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I must have missed the orientation where Ut Prosim translates to 'That I May Be Entitled'.

I'm all for constructive criticism but considering you've publicly stated that there is nothing Fuente can do to change your mind this year, can we just give it a rest with the constant negativity and entitled comments?

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

...what?

UVA is not a good enough football program to hang our hat on beating them.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Literally nobody is saying we should only be satisfied with beating UVA, but acting like it should be a guaranteed win every year is entitled. We've beaten some legitimately good UVA teams during the streak, and we've had legitimately good teams lose to UVA before the streak.

Obviously we can't sustain the program on beating UVA alone, but if we ever lose to them again it doesn't inherently mean the coach should be fired and the program is a disaster.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

TBH you're putting words in my mouth, throwing around the word entitled, and editing your posts several times over because you seem to be upset with me so I'm going to leave this alone.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I probably should have taken a UVA post in jest and moved on but it feels like many people believe that VT should be able to walk over every ACC opponent that isn't Clemson or Miami. I don't know any other way to describe that mindset other than entitled and I have been extremely disappointed in its apparent pervasiveness.

Hopefully we can start to string together some wins and maybe that will drag us all out of the pit of misery.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Hopefully we can start to string together some wins and maybe that will drag us all out of the pit of misery.

But they are a division 1 football program and our in-state rival.

If Fuente had lost even one game against them I can't even imagine the TKP thread meltdown levels!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Unfortunately, the streak won't last forever. UVA absolutely should have won last year.

My point is that if you're UVA and you're sitting down with Bronco at the beginning of the season to lay out that year's goals you likely have "Beat Tech" on that list. See: them breaking that stupid rock.

Whit and Fu ideally should be focused on loftier goals. UVA should be beneath us. They may be on the rise and/or we may be falling, which is unquestionably bad but I think this program has the raw materials in place to be a perennial 8+ win team that (given the weakness of the Coastal) should make fairly regular ACCCG appearances like we used to.

What will happen to these odds if he loses to ODU again?

If he loses to ODU again he shouldn't even make it back to the locker room with his job.

If he loses to ODU, there will be a lot of people encouraging him to resign and save us having to come up with a 12 million buyout.

And it would likely mean that Bud gets the interim Head Coaching job for the remainder of the season to close out his career....
