Letter from Brian Hoffman to the NCAA

It certainly does not appear that the family will take this sitting down. They're going to fight, and I hope they do. They have my full support in this venture. This whole thing is... bad

Interesting to note that Jerry Vaughn Jr, to whom this letter is addressed, still has a NCSU bio linked to his official Twitter handle, where he also says he's employed by the NCAA. Of course that link is dead... but nonetheless...

It would appear that Jerry did his undergrad at NCSU.

Wolfpack

It would appear that Jerry did his undergrad at NCSU.

I honestly thought you were posting an NSFW article about teacher-student relations until I saw his LinkedIn profile pop up...

Well, that explains it.

Hokie Nation is 100% behind you, Brian, Brock, and the rest of the Hoffman family.

Shots fired. Have at it, Hoffmans!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Judging by his Twitter activity, it appears Jerry is also the compliance officer who granted Solomon the waiver at Tennessee earlier today

The timing of all of this stinks including the denial less than a week before the first game....WTF?

Yeah, part of the explanation should be why they couldn't have come up with the decision sooner.

If it's that hard a decision, they should grant it, because there is clearly a decent case for it.

Someone get The Rock in this...that man is beloved by the entire world and part of Ballers was about him taking on the NCAA. Get his voice and his tens of millions of followers lashing out at the NCAA, make this so public that it cannot be ignored by anyone, anywhere.

SOMEONE GET JA RULE ON THE PHONE.

WHERE'S JA

I would embed the Dave Chappelle bit because it's one of my faves along with that whole standup set but I'm honestly not sure about the community guidelines because it's definitely very NSFW. "Dave Chappelle - Ja Rule" on the YouTube would do the trick, haha.

I just @ed him

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

The Rockβ€”a Miami Football alum, no lessβ€”doing this, would cancel out Trevon Hill throwing up "Da []_[]" at graduation. Almost, anyways.

Yes rah rah and all - but this will do absolutely nothing to get Hoff to play this year. It's nice to sue, but realistically won't change anything.

No, it won't but as Brock's dad said they are doing this so the next kid doesn't have to go through this injustice. This has to end somewhere.

You'd think so, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

While you're probably correct, in today's world you never know!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

So why doesn't the NCAA have a rule that compliance personnel cannot participate in cases involving universities that compete in a conference which the compliance official has direct connection? You expect us to believe that these compliance personnel are immune to conflict of interest and favoritism in order to benefit their alma maters? Lawyers have to consider this issue, but then they can be disbarred for malpractice. I suppose NCAA compliance personnel have nothing to lose, since it seems pretty obvious that integrity and fairness are not prerequisites.

Preach!

They should have an impartial third party reviewing these, without ties to sports. It's pretty clear the process is currently flawed.

"Flawed" is putting it nicely.

Definitely understated.

The NCAA is being ridiculous on this, and deserves some heat from the media.

I'm glad they'll be getting it.

Why does Jerry's profile say he is an omega man? Does he relate to Charlton Heston? Was he in I am Legend? Or is this like a beta male but 22 more steps down?

Idea courtesy of u/oryp35 on the college football subReddit - What if Hokie fans wear Red shirts in support of Brock to the home opener?

I think we can get something like that going by then.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Why red? jw

For the redshirt he's having to take right now.

Sheesh, this site nearly melted down over the striping of the stadium last year. Can't imagine trying to get fans attending to wear a non-Hokie color...

The striping actually worked well too. I would love to do it again for a sold out game.

It did, but it was one heck of a ride getting there. That was a doozy.

It will be easier next time.

Let's Go

HOKIES

A man very angry at the person in charge once poetically articulated my reactions to all this.

I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?

@hokie_rd

I think we're ignoring the obvious way out here. Anybody know anybody who knows somebody who could get Trump on it? His twitter seems to get a lot of attention, right?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

That would be a way to get five articles in the Washington Post, all the cable news, and Late Night talk shows to give it a mention.

Yep, thank goodness we have people paying attention. I, for one, appreciate it mightily.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

WaPo is already on it

Eh, self-censored. Probably too political...

I accept all responsibility for this and apologize to all concerned. Joke, sorta, but not a good one. Sorry.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Nah, I think it was OK. Just thought my response (the one I retracted) might have crossed a line.

Oddly, my retraction got a negative vote. Go figure.

Retractions are for the weak.

Couple of legs here from me. I'm way too fond of a political argument, but I know better than to poke the fire.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I'm not sure if Teel's article is posted anywhere else, but this provides the names of the 6 people on the committee who denied his appeal.

Link to names.

Erik Price (Pac-12)
Stephen Aley - UTEP (CUSA)
Tim Parker - Virginia Tech (ACC) Recused from voting
Stephen LaPorta - JMU (CAA)
Kaitlyn McKittrick - Lafayette College (Patriot League)
Jennifer Lawlor - Monmouth University (MAAC)
Meredith Eaker (ASUN)

Hmm..wonder how many of them are on the twitters

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I find it most interesting that not a single one of the people who voted on Brock's appeal has a medical background.

Yikes... I know people on this list....

Is coronavirus over yet?

Then you should question them and their morals and ethics. Ask what the bloody hell is wrong with them.

Do you also know their mothers? Because if you know their mothers, you should call them so that Mamas can give those on the list the blessing out and ass whoopin that only a mother can give.

What is interesting is that Tim Parker works in VT compliance office as a senior AD and had to recuse himself. Hopefully when we have transfers and he has to recuse, there are other capable individuals in the athletic department to handle the transfers and are fully versed in NCAA compliance. But it is awfully coincidental that someone in our athletic department had to recuse himself and that Brian Hoffman called out VT compliance department in addition to calling out NCAA. Man, this stinks!

I don't know how much better you can understand the committee than having a guy on the committee.

It's really unfathomable that the committee could have gotten that one so wrong.

so, he recused himself from voting, but was he allowed to be part of the discussion? If so, we need someone more persuasive on there.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

you'd think he'd work in his role as the compliance officer first and recuse himself from the committee hearings rather than vice versa...

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

He doesn't work for the VT athletic department anymore, he's on the academic adminsitration side as an auditor of some kind

Common sense has no place in the world anymore.

But if we cannot handle these matters with common sense and we have to use this ridiculous process, the NCAA should retroactively issue the following improvements to the two rules they have cited.

1) Replace the 100 mi radius with "travel time and financial burden of commuting home significantly reduced."
2) Eliminate the transfer immediately rule

If Brock wanted to be closer to his mom and meet the NCAA standards, then he would either have had to give up his scholarship or transfer to a school within 100 mi that would've given him a scholarship. The former is a huge personal sacrifice impacting his future financial and professional success. The latter, if such a transfer opportunity were available, could've meant competing in football at a lower level or attending a school that did not have his major or as strong of a program. Those options would also have a huge impact on his future finanacial and professional success both in and out of football.

Over the last two years he has clearly done everything in his power to help his family and to better his future. He has worked his tail off for 2 years to earn a scholarship at an ACC school. He has earned an opportunity to play towards an NFL career and to earn a degree from Virginia Tech. All while being twice as close to home making his commute easier and more feasible.

Brock and his family had so many variables and factors to consider. Transferring immediately, if possible, would clearly not have been the wisest decision for Brock's future. Earning a transfer opportunity and scholarship was best case scenario for Brock and his family.

It is mind blowing that 6 people reviewing this case could not see the flaws in the process. This is a classic example of how paper-pushing processes are inefficient and inferior to real human interaction. These committees should either not exist at all with transfers automatically granted, or they should be required to speak with the applicant and related parties on the phone or in person.

President Sands needs to make a firm statement.
