Yeah, part of the explanation should be why they couldn't have come up with the decision sooner.
If it's that hard a decision, they should grant it, because there is clearly a decent case for it.

So why doesn't the NCAA have a rule that compliance personnel cannot participate in cases involving universities that compete in a conference which the compliance official has direct connection? You expect us to believe that these compliance personnel are immune to conflict of interest and favoritism in order to benefit their alma maters? Lawyers have to consider this issue, but then they can be disbarred for malpractice. I suppose NCAA compliance personnel have nothing to lose, since it seems pretty obvious that integrity and fairness are not prerequisites.

What is interesting is that Tim Parker works in VT compliance office as a senior AD and had to recuse himself. Hopefully when we have transfers and he has to recuse, there are other capable individuals in the athletic department to handle the transfers and are fully versed in NCAA compliance. But it is awfully coincidental that someone in our athletic department had to recuse himself and that Brian Hoffman called out VT compliance department in addition to calling out NCAA. Man, this stinks!

It's really unfathomable that the committee could have gotten that one so wrong.
so, he recused himself from voting, but was he allowed to be part of the discussion? If so, we need someone more persuasive on there.

He doesn't work for the VT athletic department anymore, he's on the academic adminsitration side as an auditor of some kind
Common sense has no place in the world anymore.
But if we cannot handle these matters with common sense and we have to use this ridiculous process, the NCAA should retroactively issue the following improvements to the two rules they have cited.
1) Replace the 100 mi radius with "travel time and financial burden of commuting home significantly reduced."
2) Eliminate the transfer immediately rule
If Brock wanted to be closer to his mom and meet the NCAA standards, then he would either have had to give up his scholarship or transfer to a school within 100 mi that would've given him a scholarship. The former is a huge personal sacrifice impacting his future financial and professional success. The latter, if such a transfer opportunity were available, could've meant competing in football at a lower level or attending a school that did not have his major or as strong of a program. Those options would also have a huge impact on his future finanacial and professional success both in and out of football.
Over the last two years he has clearly done everything in his power to help his family and to better his future. He has worked his tail off for 2 years to earn a scholarship at an ACC school. He has earned an opportunity to play towards an NFL career and to earn a degree from Virginia Tech. All while being twice as close to home making his commute easier and more feasible.
Brock and his family had so many variables and factors to consider. Transferring immediately, if possible, would clearly not have been the wisest decision for Brock's future. Earning a transfer opportunity and scholarship was best case scenario for Brock and his family.
It is mind blowing that 6 people reviewing this case could not see the flaws in the process. This is a classic example of how paper-pushing processes are inefficient and inferior to real human interaction. These committees should either not exist at all with transfers automatically granted, or they should be required to speak with the applicant and related parties on the phone or in person.
President Sands needs to make a firm statement.
