Solid Momentum for the ACC Network

SBJ reported DirectTV is the latest distributor to carry the ACC Network. The Pac-12 network which launched in August 2012 still doesn't have a deal with DirectTV.

ACC Net previously signed launch deals with Altice, Verizon and Hulu TV. ESPN will depend on Hulu's and DirecTV's national footprints as they negotiate with other distributors, including Comcast, Charter, Dish Network and AT&T U-Verse.

Also, the #WeDoThis campaign coincides with the ACC basketball tournament.

Hopefully it comes to YoutubeTV, as I have recently switched over to that.

Same. I'm hoping the $5 price increase when they added Turner was not just for Turner but for future expansion for this and some of the ex-Scripps networks but I'm still grandfathered into the $35 so if I have to go up to $40 I don't care haha.

Two problems with this
1. We're shaking keys then it sounds like they say Touchdown Tech, so we're distracting our own offense. What do they think we have LOLUVA level fan awareness?
2. Cuts at the end to a guy in a sweatshirt with the new academic logo ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿšฎ. That trash logo is leaking over into athletics and I want it to stop

I would rant on how its annoying they're trying to peddle the Academic logo on the Fanatics site (which is who hosts our official online store) but the VT site on Fanatics is so poor that the lack of design is what creates the most frustration.

Feels like this is going a lot faster than what happened with Big 10 and SEC networks. Most analysts thought the ACC would learn from some of issues those two ran into negoatiating their carrier deals, and it seems they did. Exciting stuff.

@hokie_rd

I assume this is just like the SEC network; if I have ESPN I have ACC?

Twitter me

Probably not that simple. But if you have SECN and live in ACC territory, I wouldn't worry about not getting ACCN.

The major difference though between the ACC Network and the PAC 12 Network is that ESPN owns the ACC Network while the PAC 12 owns its network outright, so the revenue goes directly to the member schools without a corporation taking a huge cut. Now that means there are risks ESPN takes on to ensure profitability that fall on the PAC 12 if their viewership falls off but they likely will benefit dramatically by owning it themselves with how sports are consumed in the US.

Has anybody heard anything from Cox in regards to this?

I haven't seen any movement but I did tweet at them to let them know if they don't get it I'm leaving. Their response was that they sent my request to the programming team but nothing after that. I would suggest doing something similar to increase the number of people requesting it. Can't hurt.

@vtscottyb

I chatted with Cox here in NOVA, one of the biggest VT fan footprints, and their response was meh. So, come this Fall I might be forced to go back to crappy FIOS service, and I'm no longer guaranteed to see all Tech games. No one has confirmed if games not carried on the ACCN will be broadcast elsewhere.

I'm not following the concern here. Are you saying that if you go to Fios, you're worried about missing games?
Nothing has changed with the TV rights (meaning ESPN owns all of our home games). The last time VT played a football game that wasn't broadcast or streamed somewhere was 2004.

I've had the mid-tier Fios package here in Richmond for about 7 years now, and I've never had any concerns about not seeing a Tech game. In fact, the last time I had any sort of issues being able to watch a game at home was probably a decade ago, in the early days of streaming (going back to ESPN360) and when ESPNU was still an elusive channel.

If anything, this new ACC Network makes it a little easier to catch games because there's no more guessing which channel is showing the Raycom game. And, it's possible that there will be fewer "RSN" games.

So I guess if worse comes to worse and Cox doesn't agree to ACCN, how many games am I realistically running a chance on missing out on with living in Roanoke, if any?

Being the first year of the network, it's hard to say, since they are loading up with better content than usual to attract viewers.

As a rule, I would say the games that were most likely to land on Raycom in the past will go to ACCN. So far, we already have two scheduled, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the RI game on ACCN or streaming. I could also see any of our November ACC games (except UVA) end up on ACCN.

Ultimately, it depends on how good we are. The better we do, the more likely we are to end up on the main ESPN or ABC.

The good news is that we have four games guaranteed not to be on ACCN (ODU, Duke, ND, UVA).

IF Cox says no to ACCN, you'll miss everything on ACCN. The season opener against BC and the Furman game are both scheduled for the ACCN, and we could have more games broadcast there depending on how our season goes.

My (somewhat selfish) advice is that you ditch Cox, and tell them you're leaving because they don't carry ACCN. We need more carriers picking up the ACCN, and they won't start doing it until it hits the carriers' wallet. If enough people (like you) leave the Cox's and Comcasts of the world, then they'll be forced to add the ACCN, which gives VT (and other ACC schools) more money.

Twitter me

This is what my family is doing. We will say bye to Cox and sign up for Hulu + Live TV or YouTube TV (if they are carrying it when the season starts).

If Swofford had the guts to put an ND road game on there, that would help a TON in getting Cox and comcast on board. Their subway alumni network is millions, and they would freak if they couldn't see an ND game on cable. Like I said, this will never happen though. Same with Duke hoops... you won't see them play conference games on the ACCN...

How many Bammer football or Kentucky basketball games are on the $EC network? There are upper echelon teams that pull numbers that won't get relegated to lower networks, no matter. We aren't one of them.

I sent a note to Comcast/Xfinity

their current party line is

Our content and programming teams are in regular contact with ESPN (one of the owners and the distribution arm for this network) on many topics, including this network. The Comcast programming teams and our local management teams constantly evaluate programming choices and make decisions based on customer interests, costs, channel bandwidth management and contractual obligations.
As with any network contract, we want to come to an agreement that offers the best terms for our customers and our company that keeps both our costs and our customer's monthly costs to a minimum. Situations may change based on customer demand, channel bandwidth opportunities, business opportunities, costs and contractual obligations. Thanks for your feedback, your passion and your patience. It has been shared with the right teams. If/when a decision and contract is announced, we will be sure and make that information widely known in many places. Other providers may have announced that they have a contract to start offering this programming once the channel launches (August 22, 2019). Our teams continue to negotiate.

Disney has struck a deal with the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC) for carriage of the ACC Network and more

Less than a month from its Aug. 22 launch, ESPN's ACC Network still doesn't have carriage deals with Dish, Comcast and Charter (amongst others), but they've now signed a deal with the National Cable Television Cooperative. Cablefax's Amy Maclean broke the news Tuesday that ESPN parent corporation Disney has struck a carriage agreement for the ACC Network (as well as extensions for FX and National Geographic) with the NCTC, an organization of smaller cable operators; that will now allow the NCTC's operators to opt in to that deal and carry the network at launch.

While the NCTC isn't as big as holdouts Dish, Charter or Comcast (who have an estimated 47 million subscribers combined), it's not insignificant. A release from 2018 about them adding Cheddar said their companies "collectively serve over 8 million subscribers," which would put them ahead of the likes of other companies that have already signed on, including Verizon (4-5 million), Altice (3-4 million) and Hulu (2 million). However, it's notable that this is an opt-in arrangement for NCTC members, so the actual numbers of subscribers being offered ACC Network as a result of this may be considerably less; Maclean's piece notes that their previous Viacom deal in particular (back in 2014) saw about 50 members decide to opt out.

Still no news on youtube TV. I may be switching to to Hulu in a month if Youtube TV doesn't get the network.

National Cable Television Cooperative

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I probably would've said the same thing until a few years ago, but now I work for a company that does a lot of lobbying alongside NCTC. This is how a lot of rural communities that aren't served by "big cable" get decent channels. It, as a cooperative, is made up of (mostly) rural cooperatives that lobby to purchase rights to these channels at better prices than they ever could on their own. When the number of subscribers is 1.5 million instead of 15,000, the pricing gets much, much better. Not to mention that networks like ESPN and Disney aren't likely to have the conversation at all if the subscriber count is so low.

This may not be great news for many of us who have big name ISPs or television providers, but it's huge for folks in small towns that are streaming TV or using cable from a local provider.

Also, I know that ESPN essentially is Disney, but you get the idea.

I see that Xfinity still has no deal. And even if they do strike one, I imagine its going to be put on its highest priced tier or maybe even having to buy it separate. So for our games that get relegated to ACCN, I think I'll take up this guy's lifestyle ; )

Yeah, relative to other cable companies, Comcast isn't all that terrible. But then again that's like saying "relative to other airlines" or "relative to other for-profit 'universities'".

Perk of streaming is the easy switching...I will be switching my YouTube TV account to Hulu TV if Youtube doesn't pick it up.

Latest from what I saw on a Comcast forum around carrying the ACC Network is that they're holding out until they HAVE to "go-live" with the ACC Network, which seems to be August 22 on other carriers.

My personal opinion - I would expect a deal to come through in the next 2 weeks for Comcast to announce. The ACC has too large of a geographical footprint for them to flat out ignore the fan base.

Any word about Dish Network ?? I had Hulu for awhile and still could go back to it. But was hoping Dish would get off their rears and get in the lineup..

Jack R.

LOL...Dish network...didn't they go without CBS for a few months or something a few years back?

Yes, they are notorious for it

Unfortunately, Dish Network is my only option at this time. I'm still under contract with them or I would switch to Direct. However, I live in such a "rural" part of SWVA that I cannot get cable or streaming services (since I have no internet at home).

But, yes, they went without CBS and NBC affiliates for months. Last fall they took away HBO and are now threatening to remove FX, FXX, National Geo and those other affiliates. It's incomprehensible.

I live in the RU area, you might say. And I have Hulu plus Dish . But I have my Hulu on hold till I see what Dish is going to do. I use Shentel for my computer and run my Hulu off of it. Should have dropped Dish last month but waiting . Hulu is great at $45 a month.. Wifi , high speed is the Key...

Jack R.

I live farther west, closer to the tip of VA (near Bristol). Unfortunately, there are no fiber optic cables close enough to my house for me to get internet service or I would have already hopped on Hulu or YoutubeTV. Just praying Dish picks up the network before the season starts.

PS Vue is pretty legit for sports with a nice DVR and you can cancel at any time. Pick it up for football season then drop it. I have PS Vue, Hulu, Netflix, Raspberry Pi 3, and a few logins from my in-laws, and I STILL pay less for TV than Dish Network.

At first I was baffled that Cox hasn't reached a deal (only option besides streaming for me in Roanoke), but after doing more research, it makes sense based on their coverage map.

Cox Coverage Map

Not really. They have a lot of subscribers on the East coast. There are a lot of FSU (and other ACC) fans in the Florida Panhandle.

If I'm understanding correctly, you can't actually watch ACC Network with the base Hulu subscription. You have to sign up for Live TV, which appears to be another $45 a month. Basically, if you want to watch (legally) you have to fork an amount of money comparable to cable somehow?

Yep, streaming companies have been upping prices to the point where it's just as expensive as cable. At this point, why not just get cable and have the live tv and then just login to channels online or their app to watch on demand?

If you can't handle my shit posts, you don't deserve my memes

Yes, and it was always "just as expensive" as cable TV when you compared the amount of channels, etc. Sure Hulu is 35 bucks a month for - 18 live channels or whatever. It was never something for nothing. Never works that way when media companies are involved.

It was never something for nothing. Never works that way when media companies are involved.

Or any other business.

It's $45/month and includes the Hulu on-demand content plus 70 live channels. Live channels include all the espn channels SECN, Big 10 network and soon ACCN, all the Fox sports channels, NBC and CBS sports, Golf channel, all the major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox) and their local affiliates, major news networks, and most other decent channels that I can think of. It's actually a pretty good deal IMO.

It always helps to get your facts straight before posting.

Hulu + Live TV: 75 channels, with DVR included = $44.99/month
Cox Cable: Less than 75 channels, no DVR included = 103/month (taken from my bill)

Yep, plus Cable companies tend to raise your prices significantly in future years. We are paying about 1/2 for YoutubeTV than we did for Charter Cable Silver Package (for equivalent sports offering we get on YouTubeTV now) after the first year rate ended.

And like VTJ12 said above, the sports channels that are included with the basic Hulu + Live TV service are much better than my bottom tier package on Cox. My bill would double if I selected the premium sports package from Cox.

Yes, because those are the only 2 cable pricing models

Most people don't have the luxury of deciding which cable provider to choose. That is already settled in franchising, meaning only one option of wired cable is available to them... In more densely populated areas there is even a substantial franchise fee paid by the cable company to ensure they are the only provider.

To you from failing hands we throw

Exactly. Most localities seem to have given one cable franchise a monopoly in perpetuity in exchange for installing access. The cable companies did the better math.

Seems like their monopoly should expire at a certain point, and any provider should be allowed to compete in any local market.

But for some reason, that doesn't seem to be the case.

everyone who overbuilds eventually runs out of other people's money ... actually that was the history of cable as well until technology allowed for multiple services to converge and run both ways

No. I was comparing apples to apples as best I could.

Thanks, that's expensive AF

Welcome to the reality that many Americans face, when they have only one single broadband internet provider in their area who can dictate prices without fear of competition.

In my case, we were paying about $220 for charter cable silver package + Charter Internet

For YTTV we are now paying $52 for the service and $70 for Internet = $122 total.

Pretty big difference and we could probably renegotiate or get different internet for less than what we are paying for the convenience of keeping Charter Internet.

I was paying $190 per month for Comcast internet and cable with sports package (because the only reason I get live television is for sports).....switched to Verizon internet for 40$/month and youtube tv 50$/month. Total is now $90/month

I get all the sports channels I had before plus more, have unlimited DVR, can stream on 3 different TVs at once, and am not locked into a 2 year contract. Anyone saying streaming tv is exactly like cable is wrong.

I was paying same for Xfinity with 40 up 20 down internet (~$200 / month). I'm now paying $40/month no contract price guaranteed for two years for FIOS 100 up/down internet. I have PS VUE when I want it for $45/month plus Amazon, Netflix and Hulu. All told I pay ~$120 per month when I have VUE turned on and ~$70 per month when it's off. Any way you slice it I'm saving money.

DANG! I pay $75 /month to Comcast for a 300/20 line now. I probably pay too much for all the apps and stuff but, still better than being locked into dish.

Comcast was almost $300, FIOS was $265 when we dropped cable. We did DirecTV now for a while but now on Hulu and it's a lot better than DirecTV Now. So now it is $70 for internet and $45 for hulu and then HBO on top of that. So ~$125 per month instead of $265

I only got 70. Where are your other 5 channels????

A lot of people forget all the taxes and fees that go into the billing for Cox, Verizon, comcast, etc. I saw my parents bill and because they had three tv's with HD boxes and DVR capabilities, it added almost $100 on top of the bill.

Don't have that problem with YouTube TV. No BS fees, no taxes (at least nothing added on), no box to pay for, and unlimited DVR space at no extra charge.

I honestly don't understand why most people are still paying for cable. Got my dad to drop cable from Verizon (only pay for phone & internet) and add YouTube TV, and now he is saving at least $130/month

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Because some cable companies (Comcast) charge you almost just as much for only internet as they do for internet + TV, so removing your cable TV and adding another charge saves you next to nothing.

Oh, and they can legally slow down your access to those services now. That too.

#thingsiblamethemvsfor

This. If you have 1 box and bundled cable and internet it's the same price or less than a streaming service + the non bundled internet. I just canceled cable and I'm just going with streaming services during football season.

Yea, I was surprised at the response. I expected much less.

I mentioned I was going to switch to Hulu TV, and although they didn't mention it by name, they do seem aware that Hulu having it could lead to a number of cancellations. I'm guessing, overall, unless YTTV is getting a good deal from Disney/ESPN, it probably won't add-up financially and they will not get the network. And because Disney owns Hulu, Disney probably does not see much benefit to allow Youtube TV to get the channel. I could see scenarios in which YTTV offers to pay way over value, and Disney does not want to accept that offer so that Hulu reaps the benefits.

So, I have a strong suspicion that I'll be a Hulu subscriber within a month.

YTTV has ESPN...

But Disney didn't own Hulu until recently; so, who knows what that means in the future. In an analogous streaming service, Disney has stopped producing content for Netflix. I kind of expect a similar trend to start for live TV streaming, but idk.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

I know they do but I would assume there is some form of a contract set to expire in a few years

What I don't understand is why Disney makes Disney+ and ESPN+ separate offshoots. Why not just make it a $5/$10 addon for Hulu? Integrating would be a better experience and probably have more people sign up.

Recruit Prosim

I think I remember hearing about some kind of combo deal with Disney+ and a few other services that will be an affordable package. I think it was either Disney+, Hulu, and Spotify or Disney+, Spotify, and ESPN+

Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+

And they just announced the bundle as $12.99 per month.

EDIT: And it's Hulu with ads in that bundle, so it's less attractive.

Even still that seems like a pretty good bundle for those. Hulu has limited stuff I want to see on a regular basis so the ads are okay in that sense. Really excited about Disney+ though. Wouldn't pay for ESPN+ normally but in that bundle I might.

EDIT: But thinking about it a few more minutes it probably makes more sense to me to just suspend ad-free Hulu while using Disney+ and just alternating between the two. ESPN+ would be a nice addition but my interest in watching ESPN content has fallen significantly in the past few years.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I guess that means we'll lose access to ESPN+ by having the main ESPN package already?

ESPN+ has always been an add-on.

You might be thinking of ESPN3.

Probably, but it says ESPN+ in the corner of the screen when watching it on my computer/phone.

The way the math breaks down is that Disney+ ($6.99) and Hulu with ads ($5.99) is $12.98 by themselves, making ESPN+ a penny in the bundle.

Hulu without ads is $11.99 per month.

Using the same math, a triple bundle without ads should be no more than $18.99 per month. If I were the mouse, I would offer that at a dollar less than what HBO Max will end up costing.

Or the same price as HBO Max, and point out that it's 3 services for the price of 1 at every opportunity

That's Hulu with tv? I thought it was way more

No, that's regular Hulu that shows ads when you load a show or movie to help subsidize your subscription.

Any idea if Sling TV is going to carry it?

I wouldn't count on it. Sling and their parent, Dish, have a history of dropping channels from their offerings including regional sports networks.

http://theacc.com/news/2019/3/11/general-acc-network-frequently-asked-qu...

How can I get ACCN in time for the August 2019 launch?

Just dropped DirectTV and got Hulu Live using Roku Ultra, so far i'm very pleased. ACCN was the reason i went Hulu over Youtube and Sling.

They haven't added in the ACC Network yet, but for those of you looking for the specific channels offered by all of these streaming services, cordcutternews.com has a pretty extensive chart that makes it fairly easy to compare.

For those of you who carrying Verizon Fios as your TV provider, I was just informed by them that the ACCN will be broadcasted on channel 619.

That makes no sense. 619 is currently the AccuWeather channel. It's stuck between the news channels and NatGeo type of channels. Completely isolated from the sports channels in the 570-590 range.

I figured they'd push some of the RSNs around to make space near the other ESPN channels.

Can we please get rid of Eleven Sports? There was quidditch on the other night, and I couldn't. I just, no, not this. This is not how humanity is going out.

I've been trying to track this down for weeks myself - as of right now the ACC Network will be on channel 829 for Verizon FiOS

So, is Spectrum planning on carrying in NC?

Horrible for them if they don't.

I'd bet they're waiting until the absolute last minute before carrying the channel.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

If they don't, North Carolina is basically blacked out of the network. Which would be unbelievably stupid for the home state where the ACC is headquartered to not be able to watch the network at launch.

There is zero chance this would still be an issue if basketball season started this month rather than football.

I am going to be in Europe for the first games of the season. Does anyone know if ACCN will be available via the ESPN app (if my cable provider carries it...)? Also, anyone have any tips on watching CFB overseas? Should I also use a VPN?

I can't say whether ACCN will be available but you have to use a VPN to watch pretty much any US live TV from overseas. (I've lived in Asia for 6 years) There is the paid ESPN Player app someone mentioned above that lets you watch ESPN without a VPN but I don't have any experience with it since it's only available in Europe and not Asia.

VT BSEE '98, VT MSME '01

I travel to Europe once a month for work. I can get ESPN to stream about 50% of the time with a VPN. If I can't get things to stream, I usually try for a radio app. NordVPN has been my go to. Good luck!

Europe is the land of live sports streaming. Just google and you'll find sites. On game day i usually help those in need with a link.

Vpn in Europe should not be required. But go with ExpressVPN is you need one

Even with ad blockers, first row sports is a battle.

You can watch ACCN via ESPN player. In UK, it is 10 pounds a month.

Cox Cable here in Roanoke just says they are still in talks with ACCN/ESPN to carry it. But send a tweet to Cox and ACCN - or your cable provider..

Though I only football games I have to worry about missing on TV is Miami, ND, and GT. I assume at least of two of those will be nationally televised or local TV.

I wouldn't be surprised if ESPN and the ACC force a bunch of big games onto the ACCN over the first half of the season to force the issue on making the providers carry it.

We always hear this bickering between networks and the carriers but right now the ACC is begging fans to be their pawn so they can justify it. I want to know how the ACC/ESPN/etc have handled, what they are charging them, and so on. Curious how it compares to SEC Network and whatnot.

the contract is national, though a good chunk is in ACC territory. i think they'll sign sooner than later.

they're losing $1700+/year from me and I'll probably give about a grand of that to Hulu/Disney.

So my plan is to sign up for the free weekly trials whenever VT has a game on the ACCN. I should be good until my Uverse contract expires next year.

Will just have to create a new google email each time. OR you can get Verizon internet and they give you a free month of YTTV. Then cancel the YTTV and start abusing free weeks

Does anyone know what cable package will be needed to get ACCN with Fios? Can't find it anywhere online but it looks like the preferred package carries similar channels like SECN and Longhorn Network so I would guess it would have ACCN once service begins right?

My guess is that those details are still being worked out and won't be available online until go-live for the ACC Network. I would call Fios, but be prepared to not get a ton of information. Cox Cable seemed dumbfounded when I called to ask about the ACC Network.

For those of you who know you will be getting the ACCN, does it show up in your channel guide/menu yet? Most of my usual go to bars for are saying they don't have it and I am wondering if they will and just don't know it yet.

I feel justified in saying that, having been one of their subscribers for 9 years. We shouldn't have to beg for ACC network coverage.

I mean, sure, they suck about as much as any major telecom company. And no, you shouldn't have to "beg" them, they're taking their time to try to negotiate the lowest price for the new channel. Theoretically, lower prices for them means slightly lower prices for you, even though most of the difference will probably just end up in the shareholders' pockets anyway.

In any case, if Hulu Live gives you everything you want for a price lower than the difference between the bundled price and the price for internet-only, I highly encourage you to go for it, regardless.

The reality is that I was already paying more for the SEC network, which I never watched.

It's academic, at this point, as I dropped them in favor of HULU live. But really, they do suck. I had to call once a month to get the card reset in my TIVO box. Blacked out streaming ACC coverage when I was trying to watch remotely from Key West last year. They were generally useless.

So I still stand by

Cox sux.

Do firestick devices work with YouTube TV? I know recently added the YouTube app. Trying to decide on the best option to watch ACCN soon!

If you can cast from your phone or TV, which you should be able to do, then yes. Just open YTTV on app or web browser, hit casting button, and good to go.

I use chromecast, but Roku and fire stick should work.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

There are some apps that disable themselves when casting (looking at you, NFL Mobile on VZW), but I don't think YouTube TV is one of those apps.

I don't use a firestick but I cast YTTV to a TV in the airport RV lot all season. I use a Chromecast device and either cast it from my phone or my iPad.

How in the world did you get a signal strong enough to do that 2 hours or less till game time? I have NEVER been able to stream anywhere near lane that close to kick off on 2 different networks?

I've done the same thing on multiple occasions in the Prices Fork lot, using my phone as a hotspot on Verizon. I think I may have done it in the Cassell lot as well, but I'm not positive on that one.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

Interesting. In Lot 5, 2, and 8 at both fall and spring games, about 2 hours before game time, you are done. You are not streaming on Verizon or ATT in those lots 2 hours and up before. That's why you see all those satellite dishes in those lots. I couldn't even get VT wifi to work in Lot 5 last year 2 hours before the game.

I'm on VZW, and last summer I upgraded my line to the second tier unlimited plan for $10/mo. more (comes with something like 23GB of "premium data") and never had a connection issue, either pregame or in Lane Stadium.

Phone or iPad and Chromecast are typically connected to VZW Mifi hotspot. I usually can get streaming to work for most of the morning and then by the time the lag is significant the folks with the satellite dishes in our group have turned on the games. I mainly use it to catch the morning sportscenter and maybe cast a kids show.

Seems kind of silly to buy a streaming device just for YouTubeTV if you have a Fire TV. You'd be better off just going with Hulu or Vue for 1-3 months until YouTubeTV is officially released. Both of those services have ACCN and work on FireTV.

Hmm....a women's soccer game on 8/22, first day? Don't see how that squares with the link below, starting at 7pm on August 22. However, it might be one of the 900 games on the online only ACC Network Extra

https://www.syracuse.com/orangesports/2019/08/what-channel-is-the-acc-ne...

The ACC Network is launching just in time for college football season on Aug 22.

ACCN will go live at 7 p.m. and launch with a 2-hour edition of All-ACC, the channel's flagship studio show. The show will serve as an introduction to the network's on-air personalities.

After All-ACC, the network plans to show its first original programming project, a show on Duke basketball's 1982 recruiting class.
Other original programming teased will be a documentary on Bobby Bowden and his Florida State dynasty, a look at Clemson's 15-0 national championship team, and a behind-the-scenes look at Scott Satterfield taking over Louisville football.

ACCN plans to broadcast over 450 games this fall, with a lineup of 40 football games and 150 basketball games. ACCN also plans to show another 200 games from other sports throughout the season.

Another 900 events are expected to air on the online-only ACC Network Extra.

Here are the local channel numbers for the ACC Network in Central New York:

Spectrum: 388 (SD & HD)
Verizon Fios: 329 (SD) and 829 (HD)
DirecTV: 612 (SD & HD)
Dish Network: TBD
New Visions: 80 (SD) and 780 (HD)
Currently, Dish Network, Comcast/Xfinity and Cox don't have deals to carry ACCN.

If you don't have cable, the ACC Network is also available on several streaming services, like Hulu, Playstation Vue and YouTubeTV.

I just got Hulu TV and while I'm saving literally $0 from my ISP cable. I really enjoy it so far. I can watch TV on both my TVs just by taking my phone around, the interface seems easy enough to flip channels during football season. Pretty pumped about it actually.

We kept Comcast internet...they are our best option. I did add unlimited screens and additional DVR to Hulu and we're still saving a ton.

It's been asked, but I'll ask again. Anybody have the low down on Directv's channel for the ACCN? Has anyone tried to add it to their package, and if so, what do you have to buy to get it?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

No input of any real value, but I just searched the TV Guide app for "ACC" and it came up with "ACC 642.1" and "ACCHD 642.1".

channel 612...reportedly

Thanks, Dave. We're almost ready to bite the bullet and get that smart TV and tell directv to take a hike, but I'm not quite there yet and I can't miss a Hokie game.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

if worse comes to worse, wait til the day before the game and do the 7 day free trial for Hulu Live

Good advice. I did the Am. Prime free trial, though, and I'm hooked.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

You don't need a "smart TV", just one of the many devices that you can plug into an HDMI port to provide the same functionality.

Well, before we got hit by lightning a couple of weeks ago, I was using the hdmi to stream Am. Prime stuff. Now, neither my computer's nor my TV's second hdmi port work anymore. While I can ditch directv and go with a plug in in that still functioning hdmi, I'd rather go on and pay directv until I get a DVR and obviously it is time for a new tv anyway, it's ancient. Also obvious is the likelihood that eventually that lightning strike will cause an early death of my tv, computer too maybe, so we're just trying to muster the bucks and information to get it all done right. We absolutely cannot miss Hokie games, and we really don't want to have to watch it in real time at the mercy of commercials. Also want to record the loluva game, as usual, and watch it at our leisure unless they win big.
Thanks for your suggestion, though and appreciate all the takes. Suggestions for a DVR?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

DVRs are really only used in conjunction with cable. Assuming you tell DTV to "take a hike", you'll probably be signing up for one of the online streaming services, most of which include a DVR-like function without the need of an extra box.

This is probably the most complete comparison I've found of the major streaming TV services:

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/youtube-tv-vs-cable-tv-replacements,news-24...

It also has a table that shows a list of compatible devices you can use with each service.

Thank you macraw83. I am fine without a separate DVR box, but I do require that function. We record a lot of stuff daily and watch at leisure, so it is a paramount requirement for our viewing pleasure. We live in a bad place for wifi and high speed internet is a joke here, so I worry about leaving the generally stable satellite reception for possible outages and pixelated reception. We use no devices or smart phones here in troglodyte land, but I will check out the comparison guide you posted.
Really do appreciate the help, There is so much to learn and I'm a reluctant, tech averse Luddite. I freely admit it. But boy, do I love my TV.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Ah, without decent-quality broadband internet your options for "cutting the cord" are limited if not non-existent. I would check the services to see what bandwidth they recommend and compare that to what is available at your location (I would assume it would be in the neighborhood of 3 Mbps on DSL), but sounds like you may be stuck with DirecTV or Dish Network for a while.

Yep, I've been worried about that in particular. Broadband here in Mathews has recently been taken over by Atlantic and the word is weekly outages and poor service in between. Our county is researching broadband access in order to try to drag this backward appendix into this century, so there's hope for the future, but my Verizon wifi doesn't inspire confidence. I don't have a lot of hope, though, a lot of the people here are still fighting the Civil War (literally, figuratively, both?) and don't seem too worried about looking ahead while the county continues to lose population and young people are leaving in droves. God forbid it would cost a penny in tax money. OK, I'll stop before I go totally off the track and start something.

Too Late.

#TeamHulu

Yep, me too. I've never seen something this close to literally being a "day late, dollar short". I was on Sling TV (owned by Dish) the past few years, but switched to Hulu this past weekend. No indication Sling would carry ACC Network, they got rid of Fox Sports Midwest a few weeks ago, and they have a history of not carrying regional networks. When it came down to it, they failed me so I went elsewhere.

I'm ditching SlingTV as well. Only question is which of YoutubeTV, PS Vue and Hulu TV am I going with

Hulu has been similar to Sling in usability. There are a few seconds of load time when switching channels, there is a "recent channel" option, and a few different views to select channels from. For whatever reason it records all of the St. Louis Cardinals games, but I don't remember asking it to. When it does that, it starts at the beginning and isn't live. I still haven't figured out how to go live without fast forwarding all the way. As far as problems go, this is more the First World variety, but still mildly annoying.

Mine was doing this for Red Sox games. I found it was when you set up your account it asks what your favorite teams are and automatically records these teams. I had to go change the settings for Red Sox teams to not automatically record.

11, 2, 5, 8. That's what they have to do to fit 4 games into an east coast schedule. And beyond that, there are 4 games that are on "ACC Network Extra", the streaming-only arm of the network.

I can't imagine 11am games will be frequent, mostly happening on week 2 when practically everyone is playing a cupcake, meaning more inventory of a generally lesser quality to fit into the schedule.

I don't think 3 hours is enough broadcast time for a college football game. Typically E$PN has 12, 3:30, 7 (or 8).

Yes, I agree, but that doesn't change the fact that they have games scheduled to be televised on ACCN starting at 11, 2, 5, and 8 on September 7.

Fans need to be prepared to miss the first quarter of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th games. That is a poor scheduling decision.

I'm confused by this; the BC game is scheduled for a 4PM kickoff on ACCN. So...someone explain, please.

did you mean overestimate?

Like areas where Comcast has a legalized monopoly (like where I'm at). They are the only cable provider in the area and have the fastest internet by far. I could cut cable and go with a streaming service, but to get the speeds required to have streaming on multiple devices my only real internet option is...Comcast. I've looked into multiple times and depending on what streaming service I go with, I either end up not saving any money at all or just a handful of bucks. So you can see how that wouldn't be worth the hassle for a lot of people in a similar situation. Not to derail things with politics but I'll just say everyone should really support breaking up localized monopolies.

Interesting that 93% said they wouldn't cancel to get ACC network --- this type of demand isn't good for people with Comcast or Dish that still want to get the channel or the ACC network in terms of how much dollars they believe they will make off these deals.

That's entirely up to you. I cut the cord about 6 years ago before the streaming services were actually available as I really only use TV for sports. Realized about halfway through the season that my expenditures at Bdubs (I was much younger and naive) was significantly more than just paying for cable.

I do find it interesting that a lot of people have no respect for copyright laws. You're not the first in this thread to suggest stealing of IP property.

This is a whole argument I don't feel like launching into in depth but of all things to do this over, a college sports broadcast has to be the absolute last thing I would ever get on any kind of "intellectual property" high horse over, or ever feel any remorse whatsoever for "stealing." For a wide variety of reasons.

Just saying if you feel that way then you should honestly believe that all games should be free to attend.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I think his point was that there's no love lost for the broadcast companies and cable TV providers, who are making millions of dollars on the backs of players who are making considerably less.

I understood it perfectly but that same logic should apply to tickets and concessions at the stadium because a lot of money is made on the backs of the players, right?

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I didn't, but that's because Verizon jumped on board fairly early.

Plus, as it worked out, I ended up moving this week, about a month after my last 2 year contract was up, so I reconfigured my cable/internet plan anyway.

I would have cut the cord a long time ago, but Comcast is also the only option where I'm at for Internet at anywhere near decent speeds. Soon, Ting may be an option, and if it becomes an option, I will probably go with PSVue.

If I have to add a box & service just to get ACCN, my wife is gonna have a hissy fit. I'm planning to utilize the "I'm trying this out for a bit, just to see if it's viable" approach. I'd much rather Comcast & the ACC get their collective sphincters untied and get this deal done. I'll make a decision by mid-next week. For those of you that have already ditched cable, if I understand correctly, there's little-to-no time between setup and viewing, correct? If I have to hold out, I could wait until next Friday.

Correct - you have access instantly upon signing up for the service.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

My ONLY regret about switching to YouTube TV is not doing it sooner. Like many others, we are saving a ton of money and getting more channels.

Site Note: I didn't want my internet price to go up with Cox after dropping cable (I would lose the bundle discount). I was no longer in the 2 year contract period, so I canceled my entire account and had my spouse open up a new account to get the new customer internet rates. The price will go back up in 2 years, but for now I have the best internet price possible.

Just looking at what's available & cost, if I do this, it will likely be youtube tv, via a Chromecast Ultra probably. What do you use, or do you just stream via computer?

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I have YouTube TV and use Apple TV to stream to my TVs. Apple TV is the more expensive option, but it makes sense with all of my other Apple products (I'm quite an Apple snob). I also love that I can watch on my computers, phones, and tablets. My wife was hesitant to switch, but when I told her she could watch live TV and her DVR shows in the bathtub with her iPad, she was hooked. It's also saved me from having to watch the Bachelor which I greatly appreciate!

I, too, have had great luck with cancelling my cable service and having a roommate (and more recently my wife) sign up instead. I've always been curious as to what would happen if we switched back to me after the prices went up again, but I've never lived in a single apartment long enough to test it out.

I literally canceled over the phone and signed up for new service under the same name at the same address and got the new customer pricing. I had to create a new username which is a very minor aggravation and that's it.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I've used the same Comcast login at least 3 times, but each time has been at a different address. I would be interested to see what happens if you take a year off in between.

Hold up - if Comcast is the only provider in a given area, would private establishments (think Bdubs, sports bar, etc.) have access to the network separately? Or are they out of luck too?

Edit: Thanks for the info fam!

I feel like most places like that have DirecTV or Dish.

Pretty sure Bdubs uses Directv exclusively. I've been to more Bdubs than I care to admit around the country, and I only recall them using Directv.

Most sports bars use satellite, or some combination of both to be able to keep the feed going in inclement weather.

Looks like the ACCN is a premium subscription only option on Spectrum. It is NOT included as basic cable, like the SECN

I have Spectrun Basic in the Hampton Roads. I called them today to find out if I needed to go to the Silver package or perhaps just add the Tier 2 add-on. She told me that I didn't need to upgrade and that it is in the Basic package. Problem is that I am dialed into channel 341 right now and nothing. I will call back tomorrow or next week. Maybe Spectrum just isn't live yet?

Yeah it's 388 here in Raleigh.

But when I try to access it tells me that I need to call customer service to watch it, meaning I need to upgrade my plan.

I'm gonna put this out there as a call for help. I am currently in a position where I will not be able to watch anything on ACC Network. My cable providers do not offer ACC Network and because I live in a US Territory I can't get access to Hulu TV, YouTube TV, Playstation Vue, etc. I have tried to backdoor my way into those cable cutting services via VPN servers to fake my way into the US but they all seem to have identified those VPN servers and boot me. I don't want to get Guamed and miss those games as this will be the first time in 6 years that I will be able to be home and watch every game but it looks like I am going to get Guamed. Anyone have any ideas on other services that I might be able to use to watch those games? Any help would be appreciated.

VPN with a private/personal IP address? Harder for the services to flag it as a VPN that way. It will cost extra but could worth it.

These pretzels are making me thirsty.

Alternatively, if they have a stateside friend who is reasonably good with the technical bits and trusts them to not do anything shady, it should be possible to VPN into a home network instead. No way that should get flagged by the services, since it would be an address within the range of whoever the friend's ISP is.

Anyone here use PS Vue? I'm thinking of switching to them since they get the NFL Network too.

#thingsiblamethemvsfor

I just switched to it (2 days left on the free trial). So far, I like it! The sports package on the core plan alone is worth it. Plus it is nice that you can have picture in picture with up to 3 channels. You can set up 5 favorite channels for easy access to them. The channels are listed in alphabetical order, which was weird at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly. It also comes with DVR. If you're curious give the free trial a go. If you don't care for it just cancel without any hassle.

LAR '12 MVBones Go Hokies! USA!

The channels are listed in alphabetical order, which was weird at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

It's been so long since I regularly watched cable TV (I gave up DirecTV back in 2014, after I realized most of what I watched could be accessed through other means and what little I couldn't wasn't worth the extra expense) that I almost completely forgot that "channel surfing" was even a thing. On the other hand, because brains are weird I could probably list out about half of the cable channels between 2 and 66 from when I was a kid.

I've been using PS Vue for over two years and it has been a great service. The main reasons I picked it over Youtube TV and Hulu Live TV was for the NFL Network, a few other channels and the devices that it could run on (YTTV and Hulu have added more devices so that isn't an issue anymore). I rarely have had any issues with it - there have been a few times when a channel would not load immediately but switching back to the previous channel and trying again has worked each time so it's only been a very minor inconvenience. I haven't had any service outages and the DVR works well (the claim that DVR recordings expire after a month but that hasn't been happening with my account). The only downside I have had in the past two years is that the price has increased by $10 a month but I am still paying less than half of what cable would cost for me. Let me know if you have any specific questions on PS Vue and I will be happy to answer.

Also, for you or anyone else that is comparing cable vs. streaming services and their channel lineups, this website is interactive and lets you sort, filter and determine the best option for you.

So I have been busy but really following the new carriage deals for ACCN. I have DIRECTV and have always been in a love hate relationship with that. So I finally call and talk to them about adding it and they inform me there is a limited geographic footprint where they can allow viewers. New Mexico is somehow not an option so I am guessing that I will have to just listen to TuneIn radio or look at adding a streaming package. Why didn't any press release expose the limited geographic footprint in their press releases?! DTV might just have to make their money from someone else. I'm just pissed. Get off my lawn!

Yep, same boat your in. Michigan is not in the footprint. But somehow the SEC network is part of the package. Unfortunately I am rural so very limited options (no cable providers and top internet speed is 2Mps +/-).

I live in a county that has a population of over 60,000 and within 10 miles of the city of Harrisonburg. My one and only internet choice is a wireless dish service that costs $50 for 4 mbs. To go up 2 mbs costs $10 more per month.

approximately 19 million Americansโ€”6 percent of the populationโ€”still lack access to fixed broadband service at threshold speeds. In rural areas, nearly one-fourth of the population โ€”14.5 million peopleโ€”lack access to this service. In tribal areas, nearly one-third of the population lacks access. (FCC, May 2019)

Down a dirt road, no cable, no gas pipeline, tried Frontier internet but since I am at the very end of their telephone run the highest I could get was 1.2 mbps. I suppose I could get satellite, but the last time I had that the speed/reception was so spotty it wasn't worth what they were charging. I am on wireless now but because of the trees around me I can get between 2 - 2.5 consistently.

I'm just seeing this (I live in ABQ). Anynuodates to this? I was going to call Directv this afternoon.

I haven't seen any updates but stopped looking. Started up YouTube TV on Wednesday and like it so far. Navigation is weird but unlimited DVR and pause/rewind seem to work well. DTV will probably be gone after week two. Added bonus appears that all 30 seasons of The Simpson's are available to stream!

I called Directv yesterday, and the regional aspect applies to adding the channel individually (cheaper probably). I was able to get the channel by adding a sports pack to my lineup for $13.99/month. Not great but better than canceling at this point.

I have at&tnow (formerly directtvnow), which is generally aligned with at&t uverse, and have been struggling to watch accn shows for the last four weeks. Today out of the clear blue sky (I googled, no announcement or anything), ACCN is on my channel list, so watching women's volleyball (Pitt vs loluva) sorta kinda, just to see the channel. I live in East Tennessee south of Knoxville, no idea if this has something to do with "footprint" or whatever, but I will say this - I AM ONE HAPPY CAMPER NOW!. Hokietapes has them in playlists by the year. You have to look around a bit.

Man, I was really excited about the launch of ACCN, but pretty much all of the content has been nauseating and a non-stop Clemson/FSU/Miami circle jerk. They are throwing shade repeatedly at VT, saying this is the year UVA beats us, UVA is a darkhorse to beat Clemson, etc. Mark Richt even saying the ACC was set up to be FSU vs Miami, but Clemson obviously crashed that party. When VT won the conference outright in its first year and dominated it from 04-11. Even showing highlights of the VT-FSU title game and only showing Vick's worst plays and all FSU like we were just mowed over. The level of disrespect is palpable. You would think VT was just some absolute cupcake by the rhetoric. I really hope this team is tired of the disrespect and plays with a huge chip on their shoulders.

In their very first broadcast, Wes Durham said that the three most important teams the ACC needs to be successful are Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech.

Does anyone know how they determine if it's successful? Is it some combination of providers tracking viewer statistics, which is then used for commercial pricing? I'm curious what all goes into it.

I would say that they need miami more than Clemson. They need the villains. Clemson is just good right now but they dont have the following FSU and Miami do, they dont have a big metropolitan area like VT (DC).

National championships will never hurt the ACC, and Clemson is the only team anywhere close to providing more of them right now.

They are trying to get eyeballs right now and that makes sense.

However, there's no mistaking that right now, we are an after thought to football, and last year basketball was nice, but no one expects that again outside our circle. We got a lot to prove on the field and on the court. Players know it, coaches know it. I hope we are going to do the same thing we did in 04 and fuck shit up.

Must have missed that. Ever since then watching the ACCN, I haven't heard much positive about VT at all from the panel. I can understand to some degree based on last year, but some comments definitely border on absolute disrespect. Clemson crashing FSU and Miami's party? Clemson didn't do jack from 2004 to 2011.

I mean it's been 10 years since we were a legitimate force in this conference. Clemson has done what everyone expected Miami and FSU to do when the league expanded. It's not a slight against us to focus on Clemson football when... I mean it's not like we were making a bunch of noise nationally when we were top dogs here. We kind of earned a reputation for losing any time we were on the big stage.

For those in Blacksburg, 622 North announced that they will have ACCN for all Hokie games that air on the network. You can watch at Frank's Bar in the restaurant.

Well, I'm locked into Comcast for another 21 months due to the 2 year agreement I signed when I renegotiated my pricing. So here is my plan:
- Week 1:, BC: Using Hulu Live TV's 7 day free trial for the BC game, cancel before trial is over.
- Week 2, ODU: ESPN U is part of my normal programming
- Week 3, Furman: Using my wife to set up Hulu Live TV for a 7 day free trial, cancel after trial is over
- Week 4, No VT Game
- Week 5, Duke: ESPN is part of my normal programming
- Week 6, Miami: Network TBD
- Week 7, Rhode Island, Network TBD - Will be traveling back from vacation so may miss game on tv.
- Week 8, UNC: Network TBD
- Week, 9: No VT Game
- Week 10, Notre Dame, NBC is part of my normal programming
- Week 11, Wake Forest, Network TBD
- Week 12, GT: Network TBD
- Week 13, Pitt: Will be at the game
- Week 14, UVA: Will either be on ABC or ESPN which is part of my normal programming

For any of the open spots that may hit ACC Network, we plan to use the YouTube TV 5 day free trial in the same manner.

You can sign up for free trials once per credit card, so if you each have multiple cards you could draw it out that way as well.

My understanding is you are locked into a 24month contract with Comcast. If you call you should still be able to drop to Internet only for no penalty if you are willing to go with YouTubeTV, Hulu TV or the like if this helps save some money for the football season.

I'm going to start my psvue trial this week before committing to the change. Anyone with Comcast as their only IP have experience with dropping their cable package but maintaining internet capable of streaming? The more info I have before that phone call the better.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I've never called them up to drop just cable TV, only to cut service entirely. One option I've used that's applicable if you have a spouse/SO/roommate would be to pick a day when you could go without reliable internet, call and cancel your service a couple weeks before with an end-date of that day, and have your spouse/SO/roommate call to start service in their name on the same day. That way, they'd get whatever new subscriber discount exists, whereas you'd be stuck with whatever the going rate is otherwise.

I had to lay it out in terms of dollar but I think I've convinced my fiancee to do just this. Saves an extra 45 bucks a month for 12 months (presumably we switch back at that time??)

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I dropped cable a year and half ago but kept their internet. I didn't have any issues. What do you want to know?

Actually, this conversation just got me to check on our account, and apparently our 2-year price expired 3 days ago, so I'm in the process of doing this exact thing right now. The chat representative says he cannot take care of it, so we'll have to call a rep instead. I'll reply to this comment with any interesting details I encounter.

Excellent. I'm probably going to call this weekend (if the PS Vue trial goes well) and set up a time to cancel all my services and have the other half set up internet-only service. Let me know if you run into any hitches.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I just called Directv and bit the bullet, but I griped so much about the cost of adding both ESPN (wife and tennis) and the ACCN and they wanted thirty bucks more a month, finally the rep gave me a three month upgraded package that included both and took 29 bucks off the price. In the end, unless I screw up and don't cancel on time, I'll only be dinged 3 bucks and a few pennies a month. Not sure what I'll do in November, I really do want to cut the satellite cable, but I have ducks to get in a row first.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Not a Roku Ultra, but I route my Chromecast Ultra through a receiver and don't have any issues with YouTubeTV. The receiver shouldn't affect the operation of the Roku, it just transmits the signal with possible up-conversion of the video, depending on the receiver.

I also have hardwired the Chromecast to the router so it doesn't have to "compete" with other stuff using wi-fi. I would suggest doing that with the Roku if you can.

Thanks, appreciate the info. Wish I could do the ethernet connection, but the router is upstairs, the roku will be downstairs, and no easy way to route the cable. Would have already done that for the receiver otherwise.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I have a Roku Ultra in a spot with bad WiFi signal, and I ended up using Ethernet over Powerline and it works pretty well. Relatively inexpensive and easy to connect. Just make sure you buy the faster speed.

Wait, what?

I use the Ethernet over powerline solution for two of my 3 rokus because Comcast makes crappy WiFi modems. It works well for the most part, although if you have some thing with large motor (treadmill) on the circuit the WiFi extender is on you may have some issues.

are you streaming 4K content? if so, from where?

I'm curious about a review of whether it's worth it to stream 4K at the current state of technology.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Yes, but my TV is not 4K. Lol.

When I bought the receiver I made sure it would transmit 4K for whenever I upgrade the TV. It is supposed to upconvert non-4K signals as well. 4K compatibility + ethernet port was why I went with the Chromecast Ultra instead of a regular Chromecast.

On Amazon, you can choose regular HD or 4K for some things. When I cast the 4K option it does look noticeably better, even with my older TV.

ACCN Screw Up

I don't see how this is an ACCN screw up....

These providers were probably balking over the price, and they caved at the last minute.

Right?

Leonard. Duh.

Yeah, I'm guessing that the ACC Network would have been fine with those networks signing on earlier.

Exactly. I don't see how anyone with a basic understanding of the situation would find this "embarrassing." It's extremely obvious that having a big game as the first live event was strategic to put extra pressure on providers to carry the network.

Here's an excerpt from an article on the launch of the SEC Network

Comcast and Time Warner Cable are the biggest cable operators in the SEC's footprint, and ESPN is using its schedule to apply pressure against them. The SEC Network's first football game Aug. 28 will be between two schools based in Time Warner Cable markets: South Carolina and Texas A&M. The second game of its Aug. 28 doubleheader will feature Vanderbilt, which is in a Comcast market, against Temple, in Comcast's hometown of Philadelphia.

Also FiOS didn't carry the SEC Network at launch either and it's hard to argue that the SEC Network didn't have more leverage with football season approaching.

Anyone watch last night? I have Fios and man I couldn't believe how far away from the sports channels the ACCN is. If I didn't know it existed, I don't think I would have found it. Meanwhile SEC and BIG are like right next to each other!

What's
Important
Now

On optimum, all 3 are right next to each other.

first thing listed under "Live" on Hulu

YTTV doesn't even bother listing "by channel" unless you go looking for it. The front page is full of shows that are either popular or relevant to you based on your viewing habits, so we were bouncing around between games without leaving the front page.

Expanded my Hulu to Hulu Live today, chose VT as my sports team, and set up a limited set of channels as favorites.

Rah.

So if Directv doesnt offer ACCN in New Mexico and I have ESPN app on my Xbox, anybody know if I'll be able to stream ACCN games through my ESPN app?

Nope.

Clarification: If you do not have the ACCN included by your TV provider than you can not watch with ESPN app.

Well that kinda royally sucks. I had seen Directv was carrying the network a long time ago so I didn't get worried until today when I'm finding out its only in certain regions.

I highly doubt my wife will want to drop Directv, plus only having had it for 11 months, canceling our subscription would probably costs us a pretty penny. What is the cheapest way to get ACCN through an app?

Since it seems to be a regional thing with DirectTV, I would try it on the ESPN app or go to watch ESPN in your web browser now and try to watch a Live ACCN show to see if it works.

Cheapest is almost certainly Sling Orange plus Sports Extra package (https://www.sling.com/service). It says $15/mo for Sling Orange, but I think that's only for the first month, after which it's $25/mo, and you'd have to pay $10 extra for the Sports Extra package on top of that, so a total of $35/mo going forward. And then to add Sling Blue to get the rest of the channels you and your wife would probably want would cost another $15/mo, bringing the total to $50 to get rid of DTV entirely.

Thanks. May have to wait and see it unfold. Worst thing is we struggle to find a few games this year and then maybe drop Directv altogether next year.

You could probably get away with signing up for free trials of the various services this season (Hulu Live, YouTube TV, Sling TV, PS Vue) and reassess next year.

So I called Directv. The regional part of adding ACCN is for the individual channel. Being in New Mexico, I was able to add the channel through one of their sports packs for $13.99/month, so I went ahead and signed up for it.

Meanwhile, now that Big Al's is a really weird Chicago-Indian pizza place, where is the best place in Richmond to watch Hokie Football? Especially on ACCN?

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

Went ahead and did a HULU free trial to watch the game tomorrow. Hoping that something gets worked out with Xfinity soon!!

Touchdown Tech!!

I just called Xfinity and told them to stuff it. I'll stick with PS Vue for now, even if it's not saving me any money.

For those of you living in the Amazon ecosystem, Google has released the YouTube TV app for Amazon Fire TV devices:

YouTube TV Supported Devices

I received an email about it this morning and don't have or use any Amazon Devices, but it appears to show up on Amazon's website.

When the heck is ACCN going to get straight with ESPN so that you can watch replays of ACCN games through the ESPN app. I had to watch the Rhode Island game from Hokietapes youtube channel.

I just pulled it up through WatchESPN just fine...

Son a b__, works now but wouldn't work on Sunday. Gave me an error message that the providers were working on the issue to provide content in the future.

I searched for the youtube tv app on my kindle fire a week after I was informed of the availability of the app on the device and found nothing.

It's on the Fire TV, not the tablet from what I can tell.

Well that blows. I don't need it to be on the Fire TV, that device is hooked up to the same television as my Chromecast. And all my computers can go to tv.youtube.com and my cell has the app already installed. I need it on the tablet, dammit!

Fios will be swapping channel numbers for ACCN and Goal Line sometime after December 7. That will put ACCN on 71 and 571, right between ESPN and ESPNEWS.
