Virginia Tech offensive lineman Joe Kane has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, 247Sports has learned.
Kane, a three-star recruit out of Heritage High School (NC), redshirted his freshman season in 2018. He sufferred a season-ending leg injury and has not played at all in 2019.
A defensive tackle in high school, Kane switched to center when he arrived in Blacksburg. He was the No. 71 DT in the Class of 2018 and the No. 34 player in North Carolina in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Appalachian State, Syracacuse, and hometown Wake Forest were some of the notable offers Kane had as a recruit.

Those of you who like to panic over career backups transferring, keep your weighted blanket nearby because we are going to need for more guys like Kane to head out this offseason to make room for our class with only a handful of seniors leaving.

It's all about the context.
When it's former starting QBs, WRs and LBs leaving as part of a mass exodus just as national articles are being published about players trying to lose games, people are going to (rightfully) be concerned.
When it's a single backup who had bad luck with injuries and likely won't ever see much playing time, you just wish the kid good luck in life and see the silver lining in a freed up scholarship.
Counterpoint: when a starter becomes a former starter, fans shouldn't be surprised when the player decides to transfer. Frankly, it should almost be expected at that point. With the class breakdown the last two years, we should have expected a lot of transfers last offseason and should be expecting a lot again this offseason.
Couldn't agree more. Context is key in analyzing these transfers. What happened in the spring was concerning, even if every transfer of that group wasn't a huge loss, the overall picture was painted by more things simmering under the surface.
Yeah, there will obviously be quite a few transfers after this season and like you said, it's definitely needed to open up spots and avoid a 35-man senior class in 3 years. I've been debating with my buddies since the summer how many transfers it will take before message boards and Twitter start thinking the sky is falling. Theoretically fans will react to transfers better this year when we have a winning record than when we were 7-6. And for the most part, people won't complain too much when it's guys who haven't seen the field. From my sauces, there's at least one specific player whose transfer will quite possibly will cause some angst, but I guess we will see.
This is when an injury really sucks, looks like sitting out meant getting passed on the chart.
Transfers suck, but isn't it sooo much better to take when:
a) it's a player who hasn't seen the field and may be seeing the writing on the wall
b) we're winning and playing well
In these threads there should be a mandatory first comment (just like "Let's Go" in gameday threads) that says "best of luck to the kid wherever he goes", or something like that. Not that there's anything wrong with the other comments.

The injury to Kane derailed his career at VT. Best of luck to the young man.
Obviously hate to see anyone go, but it's understandable in may cases. I just don't like these mid-season departures. I feel like the portal should be closed after the first week in August and open up again after the conf. championship games, but before the bowls.

On the VT front not too worried about it, we had good freshmen this season on the O-Line.
