According to them. Seems like someone in their PR team would let them know that this seems like a really good way to get mocked mercilessly

"The Big 4" is what people in NC consider the Duke, UNC, NCSU, and Wake grouping in the ACC. They used to make a big deal about this back when the ACC would have everyone play each other every year.
Yeah, I get what it is. It's fucking stupid is my point.
Not much different than us celebrating the Commonwealth Cup annually over the previous 15 years. Its an in-state rivalry among all 4 schools, much like the Florida schools celebrate a state champion every time Florida plays FSU and Miami in the same year, and similar to the Commander-In-Chief Trophy among the military academies.
Agree to disagree. A rivalry is one thing, claiming the best in the state is one thing, making up some lame Championship within your conference...lame as lame can get
All championships are made up.
Creating a trophy for a rivalry between 2 teams, or simply claiming you are the best in your state after beating 3 teams from your own state is absolutely different from creating a fake championship title.
There is a national championship, there are conference championship, there are no state championships in college sports.
Edit: I don't know why I feel strongly about this one, lol, I guess it is from living in Carolina and having to deal with more alums from these schools than I care to
It's also just a phone wallpaper. Can't we enjoy UNC and Duke trolling together?
I don't know why you feel so strongly, either, there are so many similar examples of formal "championships" among small groups of rivals. Also, this one used to be a thing that they recognized back when all four teams played each other annually. But, if you're dead set on hating this, you're really going to have a problem with the fact that a recognized Philadelphia city championship exists between the 5 D1 basketball teams in the city, called the Philadelphia Big 5. Not to mention the numerous other examples provided to you in this thread.
There's also the Beanpot tournament in Boston every year for college hockey
The VT media team would have done the same exact same thing if we had beaten UVA and the RH win was replaced with a JMU win
I don't recall that happening when we beat JMU and UVA in 2010.
Making it up you say?
They physically had a basketball tournament from 1949-1981 for the Big 4.

And overall, they call it the Tobacco Road Rivalry.

Let Wake have their minute for football in the state.
I mean we've gone hard on the #NC2VT thing. I don't see Wake hurting our recruiting down there..........
You are both wrong. "The Big 4" are actually accounting firms.
Been awhile since VT was the annual king of North Carolina
I miss those days. But they're on the horizon again. We just need to figure out how to play NCSU and Wake in the same year.
In 2022, if Wake were to somehow win the Atlantic, we could theoretically go 4-0 against the North Carolina ACC schools.
That same year, we could also go 3-0 vs the Virginia FBS schools.
The real kicker is that of those 6 regular season + 1 theoretical ACCCG game, the only game that would be played in Lane is UVA. We play at ODU, Liberty, Duke, UNC, and NC State.
Very easy away game roadtrip season. We can play in the ACCCG with our only roadtrip outside of VA/NC being at Pitt.
I need to start lobbying now for a "go to all games" season in 2022, it seems.
Hard to imagine it will ever be easier than that season.
It was 2017.
Didn't play Wake or State that year. There was one year we beat 5 teams from NC.
Well that's a scheduling thing then. You made it seem like the team just wasn't beating NC schools. They beat 3 in 2017.
I get it Fireman you're eternally optimistic
2010... ironically the same year we didn't beat all the teams from Virginia.
#Godammit
I think we got all 5 in 2010.
Sounds right. Those were some good bragging rights days.
Can't claim the state with that powerhouse App State.
I want to see App St vs WF in the Belk Bowl now. I realize it won't happen, but it's my Christmas wish now.
I'm sorry but that freaking rules. They're trolling the Tobacco Road nozzles and I'm all for it.
It's not like Winston-Salem is a part of Tobacco Road or anything. No cigarette company has ever shared a name with those cities or anything.
And if they did, they certainly know how to keep a low profile on the city skyline, that's for sure
Well yes but I'm mainly talking about UNC and Duke getting trolled which I'm always in favor of.
So, should we hold a Wake for Tobacco Road?
Side note, but this is where I think college football programs should get more creative sometimes. Instead of playing in a random bowl game, why don't Wake and Appy State play on a neutral field somewhere in NC and say the winner is the champion of NC this year? In my opinion, that'd be a lot cooler for the teams / recruiting / etc. than some random bowl game. Just an idea.
Appy State would like a word
I will allow it. I will not mock them.
Eh, I don't mind it. It's s slick tweet to say- hey we beat all the other NC schools this year. Besides, Mack Brown being mocked is good for America
I think someone needs to get them a dictionary. I don't think that "BIG" is the right word here. "Average?" "Mediocre?" "Middling," maybe?
And I'd like to echo the App State shoutout:
This "Big 4" or NC State Championship thing was started by Mack Brown during his first tenure as coach at UNC.
Wake, Duke, & State when they say they're the "Big 4" Champs are basically trolling UNC. To really rub it in though, Wake should hang a banner in the K&W Cafeteria closest to campus.
We beat all 4 of them in 2010.
