- Maroon Effect - Oct 3 - GT.

The white shirt game was typically the military appreciation game, which is North Alabama this year. Not sure they every truly made it a "white out" game...
I thought this too until I saw last year, Furman was both Orange Effect and Military Appreciation, and Duke (that game that was supposed to be played but didn't) was White Effect. Not sure what to make of this year's Military Appreciation game since "White Effect" isn't called out on the schedule.
I think Whit switched it up last year.
Military appreciation game started in 2011. Not sure if they lined it up with an actual white effect that year or not. But from 2012-2018 the white effect game was the military appreciation game. The shirts weren't included in the orange/maroon deals, and we typically wore a white-themed helmet for those games at least.

Those were a cool one-off, but if we're doing an Enter Night/Blackout Effect, I think the Hokie Stone unis are better.

It was done on Reddit a few years back. They took a bunch of teams and swapped the colors with their rivals. They did a VT one in UVA colors too. I'm not a diabolical person playing on MSpaint here.

I'd rather have the black uni with more pronounced Hokiestone swatches and numbers. The stone unis were just too much.

I am legitimately annoyed we haven't played up the HokieStone pattern that Nike developed here more than we do. This needed to be subtly sublimated in two-tone maroon as the base color of our standard maroon uniforms. The use of it on the stripe and VT logo on the helmet looks great, and I would love to see how a more subtle adaption of it would look on our current set.
The fact we pretty much abandoned it after we used it the next year just bothers me. At the very least, we should be using it on the walls around Lane. I would love to see it in Maroon be the background of our end zones, much how we use it out of bounds in Cassell.

Looking back, this thing looks dated as hell now. It is a shame we only wore it once, it really was a good look. I did enjoy the circuit design they made with the numbers and stripes for us, representing our standing as a big name technical school. Wish we had played up on that a bit more, but it is what it is. These are probably best left in the mothballs given our current branding.

yeah why replace a uniform that has nothing to do with our colors, history or tradition with one that uses a historical color and reflects one of our most well know traditions and is played during the entrance of every single home game? that makes no sense at all.

I wish we would wear maroon helmets every game. For maroon effect, we wear maroon jerseys and pants. For orange effect, we wear orange helmets and pants. For any other home game, we wear maroon jerseys and white pants, unless it's a big game where we wear all maroon. For away games, we wear white jerseys and pants, unless it's a big game where we wear maroon pants.

That combo looked good against Furman this year. The Orange helmet really does work well with the new uniform set.

I know the effect games arent even 18 years old, because that's I remember when we stole the idea from A&M, but we should do a throwback effect to gray. Everyone loves a good gray shirt.
I still think you wear maroon and only maroon to every game, but I'm in the minority.
A gray shirt would sell and that is the ultimate goal right. Incorporate it into military appreciation and dont even call it an effect game.
Stripe Effect was done extremely well last time. If I had one suggestion, it would be to adjust it going forward so the stripes switch at the stairs of each section rather than in the middle of it to create more clean lines, but that's just a small nitpick. We pulled it off very well against ND and can only imagine we'll do it well again this fall.
But this needs to be our big game tradition going forward. It just looks so good.

Normally I'd agree (I have hated the idea of doing anything other than orange/maroon effect in the past). HOWEVER, I'm of the position that I deal with enough annoying PSU fans that I know they whine about other schools doing white outs for other games. I think their heads would explode if someone did it when they came to town.
Meh. I'd rather get in their heads by never losing another VA croot to them and taking top PA croots from them. Oh yeah, and taking them out behind the woodshed in Lane under the lights on national TV.

I am so glad to see white effect gone. Since it was first done in 2008, it just seems to not be a fun game.
2008 - 24-3 win against Furman in which we were tied at halftime I believe.
2010 - JMU loss.
2011 - beat Arkansas State 26-7. Boring, uninspiring game.
2013 - triple overtime win against Marshall in the pissing rain. Marshall was a pretty good team that year for being G5 but not one you want to go to triple OT against in the pouring rain.
2014 - ECU loss right after the Ohio State win.
2018 - ECU cancels leaving us to almost miss a bowl game.
2019 - Duke debacle.
tl;dr fuck the white effect game.
Left that game heading in 4th quarter. Miserable game to be in made miserable further with a monsoon. That uniform combo was an insult, but...nothing ever will hold candle to the worst one of all...
That Marshall game was a blast! I was such a soggy mess. Almost had that 98 yard Derrick Hopkins fumble return to win it!!
I had no idea I would actually end up attending Marshall three years later that day. Marshall fans still talk about that game to this day as one of the biggest heartbreakers in program history.

I'm no photo shop expert, but chrome outlined Hokie Bird on shiny dark maroon helmet, with chrome facemask, block numbers on the other side, just like the Bronco and Pistol Pete in the examples above.

The VT logos on the helmet were all peeling off by the end because of the rain. Some players had just the V or the T left on their helmet. It was a disaster.
It didn't help that the logos were basically made out of strips of tape at the last minute
From what I can tell the logo is still made of the standard 3M helmet logo material, but it's just way too thin.

No, it's definitely one continuous outline made of the usual material, not tape. The problem is that they didn't make the middle clear. There's just no middle, so it comes off easily. Especially if it goes over one of the holes in the helmet.

I'd like to see new uniforms. Period. The stripe on the shoulder and how the collar gets wider in the back is just goofy. Remove the stripe and put a regular collar on the jersey, and it is good to go.
