XFL shuts down future not looking good.

https://www.espn.com/xfl/story/_/id/29021347/xfl-suspends-operations-lay...

The XFL suspended operations Friday morning and laid off nearly all of its staff, multiple sources told ESPN. While a handful of executives remain employed, the league currently has no plans to return in 2021.

The league canceled its season last month after five games as part of a nationwide shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, pledging to return next year.

But XFL CEO Jeffrey Pollack changed course Friday, conducting a 10-minute conference call to inform employees of the news.

Damn Bat soup, we just can't have nice things

I didn't watch any of the games, but I was hopeful that players like Cam would get another chance at the NFL due to their success in the XFL. Hopefully we can get back to that one day!

That really sucks. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the games and was looking forward to it moving forward.

For those keeping track... the AAFL lasted longer than the new XFL

apples and oranges though considering the circumstances

Oh no doubt.

But I didn't have much hope that either league would make it to their championship game, regardless of how it got there.

I thought the XFL had a chance. They chose some good markets to put teams, and people were genuinely interested. Would that level of interest have lasted an entire season? Probably not. But it didn't necessarily mean they had to shut down after one year.

Fine, the xfl was a better apple than the aaf was an orange. Aaf looked all good on the outside but when you peeled it, it was dry and mealy inside with way more seeds than you woukd ever want to deal with.

Comparing the circumstances around their operation and closure is nonsensical given how different they were.

The NFL created Covid-19, confirmed.

Seriously though the XFL had a chance. Cities like St. Louis were really embracing the teams

You're right, cities like St. Louis and DC who don't have professional football really embraced the XFL.

I'm genuinely sad about this. We were having so much fun with it here in STL.

I'm with you, this one seems to hurt more than one would assume. I didn't get into the AAF but got into the XFL. I really liked the league, was excited to watch the rest of the season. I enjoyed the changes to the kickoff and would like to see that implemented in other leagues.

DC and STL seemed to be the two of the best fan atmospheres in the league. I wonder if they will try to bring it back but with some more sponsors. They have a 5 weeks to show off their product to future sponsors. I also wonder if they can find cheaper cities to operate in since they have a good attendance number to look at.

And there goes DC's best chance at a football championship

you misspelled "only" :-)

Shit, it's been 16 since DC United last won one, too

NFL should resurrect it.

I don't know why people want it to fail, I thought if it succeeded it would be a great thing for the NFL.

I will admit I think I wasn't going to watch XFL, nothing against the XFL itself but it was more I was watching Flyers hockey, waiting for Baseball to start to watch the Phillies play, and already had my fill of football with the Hokies and Eagles.

XFL files for bankruptcy

Marc Trestman. Why am I not surprised

Big game Bob chokes again?

Not that I guess it matters at this point, but it seems like a significant Conflict of Interest to have your coaches own a portion of your league. You can't tell me that that would not have some influence on the decision to hire/fire a coach.

Also, who would have imagined Marc Trestman had almost $800K lying around?

Guy hasn't had more than a two-year stint nearly anywhere he has been. And nearly all of his successful years have been in the CFL...odd.

I feel for them. I liked watching their games. Very glad they paid all of their players for the full season.

I blame Toby.

If one good thing came from the XFL, it's that Cam Phillips got a chance to show scouts that he deserves a legit shot in the NFL. I'd be shocked if he's not on a NFL team when the league gets going again.

Thanks McMahon for giving Cam that stage.

I'm a little concerned he hasn't already signed anything with any teams.

I'm assuming there were clauses that players couldn't jump ship to the NFL during the XFL season. Since the XFL just officially filed for bankruptcy, I would hope teams are starting to show interest now.

Not really sure how active scouts are these days and with the uncertainty of when teams could start playing again, it's kind of hard to sign someone to a contract when you can't define when they will start work.

As soon as games were cancelled XFL cut that clause. His QB already signed with Carolina.

I'm not surprised the top 2 QBs were instantly signed. Teams continuously jump the gun on QBs in the hopes they might be the next big one. If they were the only ones, I wouldn't be concerned about Cam but the top two DBs were signed too. So I am a little alarmed. It's quite possible that those 2 positions are in high demand in the league and the upcoming draft isn't too promising (an assumption made by me with little to no research).

If another XFL WR signs a contract before Cam, then I'd be especially worried but it's possible teams are more willing to sit on Cam for now and see how the draft pans out. Since Cam contributed to 9 of the top QB's 15 touchdowns, it'll be a joke if he isn't signed with a team before the NFL season starts again but then again, there's a reason I'm not a NFL scout.

yeah, some are calling this the deepest WR draft ever, so i'm not surprised that has depressed free agency activity for WRs -- hope Cam catches on right after the draft though!

I would not be shocked to see Cam end up with a team like Philadelphia, but we need to get through the draft, first, to see how the other dominoes fall.

But yeah, Cam in Philly makes a lot of sense. They are in serious need of a WR. I'm hearing they might be looking to offload Jeffrey and its not like they were stockpiled with talent to begin. It just makes too much sense for someone in their situation to take a chance on a guy who balled out in another league.

Walker played well in the XFL also but it helps that his former college coach is now the head coach of the NFL team he signed with.

At work, so can't embed, but Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson just bought into the XFL

Is that it? $15M??? Is that the total XFL and all assets (whatever is left) or is that just a portion of the ownership?

Think it's part of an ownership group.

It's a brand new company in bankruptcy. No team has a media kit over 1 Million dollars and the league's was 5 or 6 million overall, I think. If he can build it to a 3x multiple and dilute down it will be a big win and very achievable.

I feel like this is following a script from a show on HBO.....

This does seem awfully familiar

The dude makes like 5 movies per year and works out 20 hrs per day. I don't know how he does it. Overall, his movies are usually pretty entertaining in my opinion.

Sorry let me correct myself.

Bad movies doesn't mean they are not entertaining. I think we all love to groan through a bad movie every now and then.
