Upon opening the thread:
Kelly McGillis was always overrated, but she was in peak form in this movie.
I can't argue her casting, as the chemistry worked.
I always thought she looked so different in every scene that her character might have been being played by multiple actresses.
Say what you want about the movie, but the opening sequence is great.
Such an insufferable, unwatchable, self important piece of garbage movie.

FIREBIRDS IS BETTER THAN TOP GUN
I remember a video game from the early 90's that lifted scenes / settings directly from Firebirds.. Gunships or something like that. The main game play was flight simulator style, but the pre-mission briefings and dialog clearly used shots from the movie as inspiration for the game's sweet 90's graphics used as static backdrops

The book is better than the film, especially when Flap goes on about women.

The planes, pilots, and concepts are bad ass. Tom Cruise is insufferable. Kelly McGillis is frightening. And the lack of a credible enemy made the drama contrived.
Drama contrived? LOL. The entire friggin' plot of Iron Eagle is a contrivance of epic proportions.
As a submariner we don't ever get the chance to be on those big targets but the coolest thing I have done was get launched off the deck of the Lincoln on a COD Flight.
I assure you the affects you describe are nothing more than placebo. We only used excess loads of hubris in catapult steam.
