We made the least relevant poll, so we've got that going for us, which is nice.

Poor Utah.
Look for Clemson to claim the natty if games are never played.
That's more of a Bama move ...

Very Alabama, link for reference.
Teams that will try and play as long as possible and then claim NC:
BYU
Navy
Army
Air Force
Liberty
Bama
A&M
Clemson
Michigan
UCF would like a word
Ahem...something, something...Notre Dame.
This would be a great year to win all your games to guarantee a tie for the claim.
But maybe all you'll get is the t-shirt.
Let's GO!
HOKIES!!!!!!!!!
Damn, no paper Miami hype this year?
The coaches probably aren't buying it, but I'd be surprised if they aren't ranked in the AP Poll.
I take back every mean thing I've said about the coaches poll, they clearly know their stuff
Seems about right to me, though I'll believe the UNC hype when I see it (they're 9-15 over the past two seasons). Also with no OOC games, I'm happy we have a top-10 ND team to inflate the ACC's strength of schedule bubble.
Ignoring what UNC has started building just because they've gone 9-15 over the last two season is just like ignoring the problems that exist at VT because we've gone 33-20 in the last 4 seasons.
True but a high ranked class of players who won't be on the team until 2021 has no effect on the 2020 season. You can acknowledge UNC's future looks strong, while thinking ranking them #19 in the country after a 6-6 season might be a bit of a stretch.
Well they had the best true frosh QB in the country and are bringing in a lot of DL reinforcements and DB reinforcements Via McMichael and Grimes. Two key positions.
I can see it. I think we should be better though.
I'm not saying they won't be better. Just saying i can see why people might think they could be another year away.
My hot take on Sam Howell is it will be almost impossible for him to top 38 TDs and 7 INTs so it will be interesting to see if he can take a big enough step in his play that it has a big difference in their overall success.
Personally I think ranking VT #24 after an 8-5 season against the easiest schedule in the P5 is a bit of a stretch...
The end of season SOS rankings had 9 P5 teams behind us for what it's worth.
I'd imagine at least a little effort was put into ranking teams by what they're returning as well. Coaches have had a little extra time on their hands this year.
Returning lots of key starters, and an offense that, with the current QB under center, was something like 12 points a game better than it was with the other dude. If you're ranking upside, we've got a fairly stacked team talent wise, some continuity for the first time in a long time, and we were one game from winning the Coastal last year. I'm a little surprised to see us there, but only a little.
4 losses within a score (yes I'm counting UVA)
Agreed that they were generous with is in the rankings. Offense should be solid, and hopefully put up numbers like last year. Defense is the question, we have a solid lineup, but the issue is if the players will have the scheme down and can implement Hamilton's new system. Special teams seem solid. I am hoping for a season to be played, and for our coach, staff and players to have a successful season.
I hear you, that's fair. UNC did improve from 2-9 in 2018 to 7-6 in 2019, so they're trending well and have a promising QB, coaching staff, and recruits. I get why they're #19 and don't think it was a mistake.
After beating them last year and finishing with a better record, I guess I just have sour grapes from them being ranked above us despite us returning more production. I'm jealous of their offseason hype-train, but hopefully we'll bring that to a screeching halt on Oct. 10.
I'm with you. Mack Brown is a media darling and has some (well deserved) Beamer-like respect across the game. But I'm thinking the offense and QB slide back now that the league has a season of film to prepare.
Calling for the sophomore slump with all the in-game commentary shifting in the early 3rd quarter to the recruiting talk (help is on the way).
Damn I want some of what the coaches are smoking! Don't they know da U is bak?
OT: Has the Football Schedule post been locked for some reason? It's the only topic that's not letting me add comments.
https://www.thekeyplay.com/virginia-tech-football/2020/08/20073/2020-vir...
It was locked because people don't take hints or instruction.
Got ya. It wasn't earlier when that discussion was going on but I skipped over most of it so I didn't see people ignoring the instructions
Yeah that got out of hand quickly...good move by joe...cringeworthyπ¬π¬π¬...man we need hokie football this fall πππ(safely of course)
If you look for a comment in there from Joe, you will see why it was locked
In my semi-serious research, we have always won on my daughter's birthday weekend or post-birthday weekend. We have played once since she was born.
2009 BC: W
UNC game is only the second time since she was born that we'll play on her birthday. We should win. It's science.
The other daughter on the other hand, her birthday is 1/3, and we haven't had a lot of success on that date.
Look for Clemson to claim the natty if games are never played.
Heck we are claiming the title if no games are played...Go Hokies...National Champions...we number 1 Baby!!!!
Bring on the Wahoos in game 2
This ^^
Edit- sorry too many bourbons on a Thursday and didn't comment on the right response
Utah at 200 seems kind of low
USC at 15 feels a bit high
I do recall my Senior Year 1999-2000 (The Natty year) we played UVA early in an away game. Off course we won and went undefeated in the regular season.
Not sure if I'm right to bump this thread, but we're unranked in the preseason AP poll. We're 27th if you extend out the rankings (Tennessee is 25th with 133 points, Memphis 86 points, and VT 85 points).
I don't really care for what the fake news media thinks is a top 25 college football team /s
#NotMyPoll
But if you take out the 8 teams from the B10/P12, we're ranked 19, and that doesn't seem bad!
I long for the days we were consistently in the top 20 (with all teams accounted for)
