Excellent piece, Pierson. Just to elaborate on it, it seems like what we've had the two weeks prior to NC State was half the team not showing up. The defense let the team down against ECU, and the offense laid the mother of all eggs against Pitt. Finally against NC State we saw both sides of the ball show up for a game, and while it wasn't as great a performance as we saw against Purdue, it was encouraging to see.
Our problem hasn't been talent or scheme. We have enough of each to beat any team in the country. Our issue has been consistency. We have had consistent output from offense and defense in three games, and we've won each. We've had issues on one side or the other in our other three games, and we've lost each.
(Granted, our "issue" in our first game was losing our starting QB and being afraid we'd lose our second string QB, too. Given the beating Motley has taken the last five weeks, I can't fault that decision.)
You bring up a great point. It sounds like everyone was told "Gates open at 7:45" and decided to show up at 7:45. I look at gate time in a situation like this similar to a flight departure: if you show up at the posted time, you will not be happy with the outcome. If gates open at 7:45, unless it's a hurricane outside, I'm in line by 7:30 at the latest, probably 7:15. I noticed when the game kicked, the stands looked like they were perhaps at 30% capacity, and I'm guessing those are the fans who decided to show up before gate opening.
Just like how spiking the ball isn't intentional grounding.
I regret that I have but one leg to give for this Animaniacs reference.
For those at the game, how long did it take for the stands to fill after kickoff? I'm thinking a fifteen minute delay would have solved most of the problems. If it took a half hour to get everyone in, though, I think that would have been an excessive delay.
VT.
You just said we had to put down the bet, not win it.
I hope you're right, as a Hokie, and also for Motley's sake. That young man has earned a week off.
Come clean. What do you have to do if we lose?
Not gonna embed because it's sorta kinda NSFWish.
I think we are about to have a hard time in Miami. Not just being pessimistic. Let me explain.
I'm worried we have backed ourselves into a corner. Motley isn't just banged up, he has a sprained ankle. It's one thing to tape the fuck out of it immediately after spraining it, but even if it's a mild sprain (possible since Motley walked off the field putting weight on it) it'll at least take a couple days for the swelling to go down. Either way, it will limit Motley's mobility to some degree. It'll be an issue.
So then does Lefty abandon the QB power? Or does he still run it knowing Motley will get hurt at some point in the game? If you limit Motley's mobility, his level of play diminishes. If you run him, he will tweak the ankle again.
Also, Motley's passing got worse after the ankle injury. It didn't look like he could plant right and step into his throws. That will be a big problem if the ankle is still hurting him, and I've never heard of a sprained ankle being 100% in eight days.
I could see the offense being ugly for Miami if Motley is still feeling it. Lefty's top job this week is developing a game plan that can be effective if Motley is hobbled and Brewer isn't cleared to return.
I totally think we can still win, I just think the QB situation makes this by far the biggest challenge we've faced this season. (Yes, counting OSU.)
You expect Motley to be mobile in a week after how he looked a at the end of the NC State game?
If Brewer can't go, we might be in trouble.
Plus the fact that no matter how much they might look like they have never heard of the game of football this season, you can rest assured they will make an ACCCG within two years. We've seen this movie before. CPJ's down years just seem way further down than most.
This is honestly the first time in my entire life I have ever witnessed the use of the phrase "gosh damn." I felt that warranted mentioning.
I'll reference the assassination of Archduke Ferdinan if I think it'll get a laugh.
Or as Tonya Harding's bodyguard.
"Hehehehe I've got my credentials clipped to my crotch..."
You should watch the whole short film. It is really well done. Nice build if slow dread.
"KEV-in"
So VT rushed for exactly 200 yards against NC State. That's the first time VT has rushed for at least 200 yards against an ACC opponent since November 1, 2012, when we played Miami.
That was also our third 200+ rushing yard game this season, matching our total for all of last season.
But we'll all only get six comments each.
Frank Beamer channeling John Madden.

Lefty trusts Motley to run an offense similar to LT in 2013. When Brewer returns, you will see a more tailback-oriented running game, I'd wager.
But I'm guessing there's whiskey.

What area of special teams does Shane coach? I know Frank is THE special teams coach, but the actual unit duties are divvied up amongst the coaching staff. I have no idea who coaches punt returns. It might very well be Shane, but could just as easily be someone else. Having your running backs coach be in charge of punt returns probably isn't an unheard of concept.
