Moorehead >> Sherman in coaching blocking. Hopefully Zohn maintains that, but given the scheme ODU runs, that might be the one area where there is cause for concern.

Agreed, but JCC was still wary of contact early on as well. Late this season was the first time in his career I've seen him run with a chip on his shoulder. If that carries over, he could have a breakout season next year.

That was the era of the "November meltdown." It seemed like every year VT would start out on a tear, go 7-0 or 8-0, get everyone's hopes up, and then completely shit the bed down the stretch.

The pressure on Marcus coming in was monumental. Before he took a snap in a live game, there were sports journalists saying he was going to win VT a national title. The expectations were astronomical.

This is not to excuse Marcus' behavior. Just saying some people rise to the occasion, and some don't.

I'm inclined to agree, except that statistically speaking, our passing game has not improved under Loeffler. And I don't just mean in terms of yardage. That doesn't mean you aren't right, it just means there aren't numbers to back it up.

If I put a gun to your head and made you choose, which would hurt worse? Not having Facyson or not having Maddy?

That is about an hour away from me. Crazy.

Whatever happened to Kris Harley?

Funny that the concern here was DT being unproven and now it's the anchor.

The jump from 2013 to 2014 popped, because there wasn't much reason to expect it. (One reason why daveinop's original post surprised me so much.)

We went from opposing defenses having to key in on both the QB and the tailback in the run game to opposing defenses knowing that Brewer wasn't much of a run threat. Every other time that's happened since the Michael Vick era, non-QB running has suffered. In this instance, it flourished.

Better tailbacks, Loeffler's system, Searels' blocking scheme, the arrival of legit OL recruits, something had to contribute to that. Or more likely, a combination of factors. But regardless of the specifics, it's something that didn't happen under Billy Hite as running backs coach and Rickey Bustle and Bryan Stinespring as OCs.

I don't think any kind of casualty can be determined, or at least not by an amateur statistician like me. But something is contributing to the fact that our running backs had significantly greater success in 2014 than the previous year. I'm sure part of that is a talent infusion, but I have no doubt the arrival of Stacy Searels and the installation of his blocking scheme play a role. French would know the specifics way better, but by my layman's perspective, Searels' love of big, mean linemen would have to be a boon to the running game.

Statistically the best offense we have fielded, but in large measure because it had to be. An antiquated defensive scheme has a lot of failings that year and we found ourselves in a lot of shootouts when Frank & Co. might have otherwise chosen to play ball control and shorten games. Still a ridiculously talented offense, though. Take the 2003 offense and the 2006 defense and you have a team that would make a run.

Point taken. I didn't really intend for that to sound misleading, but it does come across as overstatement.

Sounds to me like you're just coming up on the short end of a generational shift. I get this sometimes myself. I was raised to abhor profanity. I got over it, but I developed the ability, perhaps due to my upbringing, to be a profanity mullet. I curse like a sailor, but only in settings where it isn't inappropriate. When I hear people use profanity in public settings, I cringe a bit. Seems crass to me, and I'm sure these people probably have some problems advancing themselves socially and professionally if they can't determine when not to curse. But then I remember, it's just words. It's exactly as offensive as we as a culture communally agree to find it.

Words are words. Sex is sex. Some cultures and communities get hung up on it, some don't. And within the same community, the reaction to it changes by generation. American culture in general is growing more sexually permissive, thanks in part to the end of the AIDS scare and the rise of porn chic. And that leaves a lot of older Americans shaking their heads.
