I confess myself to be cautiously optimistic, because Beamer pretty much put my concerns to bed that he was going to turtle up and go with a "safe," ultra-loyal choice who wouldn't leave the program, a la Mike O'Cain to replace Kevin Rogers. The fact that Frank opened with accepting that turnover is part of the business speaks volumes of how far his mindset has come since 2006.
Wait a minute...
Commits to Hokies, rating goes UP????
Our weakness against Pitt the last few years has been stopping their run game. They run straight power and have an ungodly big O line that our undersized D line gets beaten down by.
But just imagine if they actually have the moves and speed to play the position with that size.
Personal preference would be for skill position coaches to recruit their positions, and it would be an added bonus that he already has ties to a talent-rich state like Florida.
In a weird way, it makes me feel a little better about the situation. Happy wife, happy life.
Ties to the 757 isn't important in a WR coach, IMO. I'd much rather that position coach have deep ties in Florida even if some of our coaches already recruit that territory. The 757 doesn't produce enough elite receivers to bank on.
When listing necessary qualities for a replacement, first thing out of his mouth was, "You have to recruit." I think the focus is in the right place, and I love that he's getting player feedback. That quote was way more specific and way less coachspeak than I'm used to from Beamer.
The only thing he didn't say that I wish he had was that he's going to get input from Lefty.
We lost a great recruiter, but we don't know the effect on overall recruiting yet. If Whit brings in a suitable replacement for Aaron, overall effect to recruiting might be null.
Good lord you're right. Who was the one preseason vote?
Or Shane, or Cornell, or Searels, or Gray. We have some good recruiters who put in the hours. If we go out and get another young, enthusiastic coach for the job I think we'll be okay in the recruiting department.
We weren't on anyone's radar going into '99. It can happen anytime.
That's actually what I was thinking.
I'll have what the gentleman on the floor is having.
Pass happy teams with a poised quarterback could score on the 4-4 without too much effort..case in point, 2003 Cal.
One thing that was pointed out, he didn't recruit a WR this cycle. So while he was the face of the program to a lot of recruits, the position coach that recruit expected to have is still here.
This is the one upside to dividing recruiting responsibility by region rather than by position. There isn't much incentive for an offensive tackle to follow a wide receiver coach to aTm.
I gotta say, I am liking what I'm seeing out of the program. There is a LOT of fight in this dog, and at some points tonight good shots just refused to fall. But Buzz's guys played for two full halves, buzzer to buzzer. We're witnessing a program being built.
Damn. Didn't any of our receivers go into coaching after graduating?
I'm hoping it's more 2 than 1. I'd hate to think we're losing him because we refuse to pay him. That would be a Jim Weaver move right there.
We got some big ol' cornfed farm boys up this way and I was ecstatic when I heard Aaron was looking at OL from Mundelein and Decatur. I hope that doesn't dry up now.
I don't think it's standard practice to ask permission to talk to a position coach, just head coaches and occasionally coordinators.
If you really wanna ruin his day, down vote his posts on here.
I agree with both of you. I'm hoping that Whit matched the offer but Aaron wanted to work with an offensive genius to improve his resume.

The source on that is Hokies Journal, who reported that all nine assistant coaches visited Virginia Beach leading up to Sweat's commitment.
And I'd highly recommend adopting a friendlier tone when taking part in friendly discussions.
