Honestly, this was my ideal situation with Mullen as HC. I still like Pry as a cultural fit, he's just not HC material.
Their geographical reaches are the same distance as our recruiting hotbeds
How is he not a good HC? He had Miami progressing up and was only forced out by crypto money. He's had Duke competing at the same level as they did under Elko. I would love if Manny Diaz was our coach, that's a baseline 8-9 win team every year.
Wait until next week. 4 games to preserve RS. Pad stats this week for transferring. This week is kind of a try out for those who will be playing the rest of the season.
There have been four coaches ever to have two 8-win seasons at SCar:
- Joe Morrison
- Lou Holtz
- Steve Spurrier
- Shane Beamer
In 4 full seasons, Shane's had three winning seasons, and two seasons finished ranked in the top 20. SCar is tough job man. Shane's doing well there.
and if the NCAA passes 5/5, there is no eligibility reason to declare now
Good! There were so, so many dead pixels and issues with the old one.
Somebody posted on one of these threads that there were really only a handfull of players that had not taken a redshirt previously in their career
I doubt they could hang it off the existing structure. Back when they re roofed it 20 or so years ago they had to add a bunch of purlins to reinforce the existing structure. Would be cool though.
- I think Whit stays on until a solid transition plan is in place
- I feel like Whit has been a good company man (aka has fallen on the sword for Sands) so the BoV/Sands will treat him with respect
- I know there is no one else at the university who could step into Whit's role during a transition phase because no one else has institutional knowledge
I believe the powers that be will keep Whit around as long as he can continue to provide some value (maybe 2026). I believe he will be given his flowers on the way out because he has been the fall guy for Sands/BoV (and I say that without excusing him from mistakes he has made without Sands/BoV).
Couldn't this mean they already burned their redshirt years in previous seasons?
They had an excellent season last year, and beat Clemson 2 years in a row. He's succeeding there. One loss doesn't make you a fraud.
Need I remind you that is not something VT has done in some time EVER
I'll give ya the development part but the 99 team (albeit with generational talent) put up 41 points a game and 2000 40 PPG both top 5 in the nation at the time. And 2016 was 35 ppg- good for 33rd in country. So not never but perhaps not due to coaching or scheme but instead to talent.
So it's multiple hours away from anyplace good. Got it.
Well put - If VT can come up with a Clemson/FSU-level package (Comp, assistant salaries, NIL), then those guys are in play. But VT remains a distance third/fourth in ACC football spending, then I don't think it's compelling enough for those guys.
But I could be wrong. After all, Sumrall was supposedly going to be UNC's HC before donors pushed out Bubba and forced the president to hire Belichik. And VT in more invested in football than UNC sooo... we can hope.
Nobody has burned their redshirt yet this year, as there have been only three games. (Or 1.5, depending on how you look at it.)
Technically yes Lovett can continue to practice/play but will the staff allow it is another question
I think many of us can agree that Pry underperformed with the current $144mm annual budget
To be clear, that budget is for ALL of Athletics.
As I mentioned here, Pry had nearly $41m to spend on football, which puts us at fourth (basically tied for third) among ACC Publics.
But on the flipside, how fast/ likely is it that the current leaders can secure a $200mm annual budget that Babcock suggests can keep us competitive?
If we can all of a sudden find an extra $50m+/year in the couch cushions, then Whit has seriously failed at his job.
I don't think Sumrall or Golesh are totally out of the realm of possibility, but I agree they are at the peak of their bargaining power and can be patient/choosy when it comes to their next job. I think they will shoot for something higher and more stable (P2, possibly upper crust P2)
Satirical post based on the current state of the football program
I think Sumroll and Golish go P2. I think the options are there. Given that there were ZERO SEC openings last year, and there will be... at least 3 this year? You gotta figure that they're going there.
If there's not 3 SEC openings this year, then that signals that we truly are in a new world where paying players is more important that paying coaches (or at least more important that paying buyouts).
Actually answering your question lol:
is this one of your top candidates that also feels feasible for VT?
I want VT football to be fun. The lunchpail is great an all, and obviously I'd prefer to win, but I also don't want a team that looks like Iowa football. WKU is always fun. Next time they play, watch them.
For that reason, I would be super excited about Tyson Helton.
I also like that he has a good eye for coordinator talent. If VT is good, our coaches will get poached at a rate that is very unusual to us. Having a guy who can roll with that is beneficial.
Meh, unlikely. You don't really pay coaches based on their past experience; you pay them based on the norm in the conference. So he'd probably get a median ACC Coaching salary of $4m-$5m or something.
Also, these guys have agents. And those agencies basically have a monopoly. So I don't expect to see a $3m salary with incentives, just because I haven't seen that at an ACC school at any time in the last 5+ years.
So we could offer 3 million a year (what Shane made to start) with significant incentive bonuses for wins, points, etc.
IMO Shane has proven himself at SCar.
Shane and south carolina are frauds. Vandy trounced and exposed them. Oh,Sellers got hurt. Okay, the same Sellers and offense that put up 17 points on our vaunted defense? Three games in and everyone has seen our linebackers and secondary perform; and all Sellers and SC could muster was 17 points? Yeah, they're frauds.

Only the speakers were center hung back then, and if we needed extra supports for that, putting the entire scoreboard there is a non-starter
