Indiana actually does have pretty good football recruiting. In Bloomington you also have access to Illinois, Chicago, Ohio, and St. Louis is only about 4 hours away. Nashville is also about 4.5 hours away.

David Teel indicated on the TSL pod yesterday that his sense around the program right now is that Whit Babcock will still be AD going into the 2026 season. It was interesting, it kind of contradicts what CC seemed to think.

If the board hangs on to Whit, then it's a signal to me that they are not serious about changing this program and turning things around. And it's not just me who will feel that way, it's a signal to the entire CFB world. As CC has pointed out many times - it's not just his bad football hires, it's his management of the department as a whole - lack of critical backfill hires, the state of the Hokie Club, hell - the not hiring a CFO thing alone should be enough to send him packing. It's inexcusable. Teel mentioned that he gets the sense that Whit really wants a chance to get football right and doesn't want to be remembered as the guy who ruined Hokie football.

I don't really give a shit how strongly Whit feels about wanting to get football right, and not wanting his legacy to be that he ruined VT football. If he didn't want that, he should have simply been better at his job. This isn't a charity case, where we should let him stay on to save his feelings and dignity.

I don't think we should let him within 100yds of this program, ever again. I don't care that he's been stripped of decision power regarding football. Just knowing that he is still a voice in the room AT ALL, even in an "advisory only" capacity, makes me feel uneasy about the whole thing, as though there are already half-measures being taken rather than just ripping the bandaid off and truly starting over.

Serving Whit Babcock up to us again in 2026 as part of Virginia Tech Athletics, in any capacity whatsoever, would be like serving us a sandwich and telling us there's "only a little poop" on it. How many failures is it going to take for the culture at VT to learn that half measures cannot be tolerated?

If Whit has been effectively demoted into a role which has no teeth and no power, what is the point of keeping him around at all? Just fire him at that point. No half measures. I'm tired of the pussyfooting around. I understand that we are probably going the way of having a football GM somewhat separate from the AD - I still do not want that AD to be Whit Babcock. Whit has underperformed monumentally at THE most critical function of his job as an AD here - football - for over a decade now. Someone needs to be a big boy, shake his hand, and show him the door.

But for an Athletic Dept that is supposedly desperately behind in funding, this seems like a very strange/low priority item to be spending money on.

Well, they have one more game to play and then redshirt. Maybe some are thinking they'll get some highlight tape against Wofford and THEN redshirt and enter the portal.

edit: Another consideration to make, NIL payments are typically tied to being there and playing. Some, most(?) are paid in monthly installments for this reason. And a third consideration is that some of these guys, particularly younger guys are waiting to see how things shake out. If they like the coach hire, or their position coach is retained, etc. they might want to stick around. There isn't much incentive for them to rush when they can just wait and enter when everyone else does at the end of the season.

Not really... I think a lot of the guys on this team have already burned their redshirt. No point in entering the portal now if you don't have a redshirt year left.

I worry about VT being close to a dead-end job. We're not there yet, but until Whit is gone, a new AD is hired, and the BOV truly commits significantly more to athletics, I worry about the attractiveness of the role.

FWIW, VT is behind in Athletics spending in the ACC, but we're doing fine in Football Spending in the ACC.

To be fair, Mullen also said: "We're in the season now. We'll do recruiting after the season. When it gets to recruiting time, we can talk about recruiting," after getting blown out by UGA. He also had scouting issues - his 2019 class had seven top-150 recruits, but only 1 (Kaiir Elam) worked out. Pretty sure he also had a roster imbalance issue (like Fuente) but I might be misremembering.

THAT SAID - I don't think that matters as much at VT. VT doesn't need to jump from the 15th best class to the 5th. We need to get back to being a top 30 class year in year out.

Yeah Shane has done well recruiting, but is South Carolina actually good this year?

If Sellers is healthy, they are. Also, last season was a great run. I think SCar is a tough job, and Shane is arguably the second best coach in program history.
