I think a lot of the attendance is pretty set. Most of the big schools it's not about the game but the expirence. We used to walk up amd down the gold lot at WVU just to see who we haven't seen in a while and get free food. My friends grandparents have been to every PSU game for 50+ years. His grandmother hasn't been in the stadium since the 80s. She would wake up early and cook for everyone and then game time she'd take a nap in their camper. It's not about the team you're playing it's about the expierence.

People tend to forget that hat JMU game was the perfect alignment of factors against a VT win.
Most important factor was the Boise St game the week before. It was a physically hard-fought game late on a Monday Night that ended in an emotionally devastating loss. Most people don't understand how long it takes to physically recover from a football game and to prepare for the next one. It's a major reason why Thu Night NFL games tend to be kind of ass. A typical game week is game on Sat, rest Sun (and sometimes Mon), recovery, practice, and game prep Mon-Fri. That week they didn't even get back to Blacksburg until Tuesday morning so that day was a complete wash. That left just Wed-Fri for recovery and game prep for JMU. But the players were answering questions all week from reporters about the devastating Boise St loss. You could sense that they hadn't moved on mentally and the reporters weren't exactly helping by constantly asking about it.
Second factor is that Mikey Matthews (JMU's coach) was a good football coach. He literally said in a radio interview the following Mon was that he knew that VT's players would be beat up and still physically recovering from Boise St. He then said that they kept talking about that game in interviews so he knew that they wouldn't be mentally ready. So he made the smart decision to switch to an option-based offense, that they didn't use the week before, to take advantage of VT's mental and physical fatigue and to try to milk the clock to limit VT's offenses opportunities. VT had no way of expecting that switch so the defense, already slowed down due to fatigue, were completely caught off guard. By the time they could adjust, it was too late.
Then add in the rain. A wet field slows down a defense. So a VT defense already slowed down by fatigue and slowed down even more by trying to think and react to a completely unexpected option-based offense now had to contend with that, too. You could see how the players just looked sluggish, like even when they wanted to move, their bodies were just having a really hard time functioning.
VT's offense wasn't exactly a juggernaut to begin with. The whole game plan was to try to out muscle the opponent at the point of attack and run the ball down their throats, because "it's just JMU", surely we can push them around. It's pretty hard to do that when you're exhausted and the other guy is fresh, even if you're the superior athlete. Add in the limited number of possessions due to JMU milking the clock and its a recipe for disaster. I firmly believe that Darren Evans doesn't fumble the ball on that last drive and VT scores if the Boise St game was on the previous Sat.
It was literally the perfect storm. I have nothing but respect for the leadership on that team that had the closed-door, player's-only meeting that is credited with helping the team move on and to just roll through the rest of the conference.
Yep, I'm at the point where I no longer pay attention until the first game of the season. Today's landscape is such a shit show. CFB has lost its depth. The teams are now just a name of their mascot with "this season's" dudes who happen to be wearing said team's uniform.
If recruiting was a two word phrase, it would be an oxymoron.
All of that is understood. My comment was purely figurative as in, last season should have been the 9 win season and wasn't due to a far greater level of buffoonery to overcome.
This season, from a literal perspective I don't see 9 wins. I think 99% of us don't see 9 wins.
If for some "miraculous" reason we win 9 it will be as big a head scratcher as last season's results. Won't make sense. No logic just a "WTF season that was, but I'll take it".
I overdid it the other way...should have encouraged our nerds to have a little more fun. Took our oldest 30 years to find a hobby...but he is really good at it!
