I saw TSL post something about him being a developmental project - so we'll develop him for his next team i guess.
Pry talked quite a bit about this at he Tailgate Tour event on Monday night. He mentioned that they sought out an OC that could run an offense suited to Drones (and that Drones loves this offense). He also mentioned they would be picking up another QB transfer to compete specifically with Watson for backup. Pry's reasoning was that they liked Watson a lot, but that he has been inconsistent. Adding competition would make both Watson and the team stronger. And that was the night BEFORE Rangel was announced. Pry, and especially Moore, were more open about players than I have seen in these events in previous years. Gotta give the people something, I guess.
What happens when the GMs rake over recruiting as a perk to the HC, and then they take over fund raising (not that coaches will ever get out of doing events), and then takes over having those hard conversations with players, cause that's a perk. What's really left for the HC to do besides coach?

Yes - there's a history of Hcs only letting their awkward coaches do limited recruiting (Gene Chizek only put Gus in front of certain players because he was such a weirdo). 6 years ago you had Joe Brady publicly talking about how much hated recruiting right before leading a team to a natty. I didn't think this was far fetched a decade ago tbh.
The difference is that OC's not recruiting on the road only took one rule change and all of a sudden it became a perk, not a punishment. Moving power from the field to the front office will take a culture shift at the player level, the staff level, and the booster level. You think coaches want to give up this power? They will fight it to the end.
I'm sure it will happen at at least one fbs program. It might even work well. But I don't think it will scale.

The NFL roster is tight, but they can have a practice squad of up to 16 players. And they start with around 80ish or so for camps and dwindle it down. They also have to sign players mid-season (especially kickers) due to injuries. I guess college could do it this way too, but probably a little harder to implement with enrollment and the guise of student athlete.
The larger rosters of college allow for scout teams, player development of underclassmen, and forgiveness of misevaluations of recruits. These are less important at the NFL level.
I do agree that 105 is a bit oversized and something closer to 80 (or even less) would yield more balance and parity.

There's one big difference, though, between college football and the NFL that would have an impact on the numbers, and that's the fact that NFL players are fully grown men coming off years of strength/agility training, while college football is employing, at the rookie level, high school kids. If college football were to adopt something similar to the NFL in terms of roster (53-man roster with a 16-man practice squad), you're going to have a lot more negative impacts in terms of incoming players not being ready to play because their body needs more growth and development. That's probably why the limit was set at 85 scholarships in the first place, because you need a place to stash those players that have potential, but still need growth.
That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a lower roster limit, because as we've seen historically, that would tend to increase parity. Though that would have to be balanced with some sort of transfer limitations, or you'll continue to see G5 and lower P4 teams be feeder teams for the P2, as the former teams take those freshmen that need more development time, and the P2 grab them when they've matured.
