you don't really duck the tax. The total value of the deal is determined at current day value, and divided over the length of the contract. And by length, it's the years the player plays. And by current day value, it takes into account average annual inflation each year.
If you mean state tax exempted, yes. This is how LA gets players to sign these large contracts when California has super high state tax. The players can move out of the state after their playing days, pay less in state taxes when they receive the income.
But, the deferred deals are a problem because as cash value grows exponentially, the LA and NY teams will exponentially grow from a larger starting pot. They can offer more than other teams now, and they can really offer more than other teams 10 years from now.

I don't even mind the deferred contracts, so long as their value is reflected in the cap. If you want to push money out, that money will be there to affect the future cap, so at some point you will be paying for the decisions made in previous years.
I heard the replay on YouTube is clear and sounds much better. I wonder if Fox used mics to capture the sounds from the speakers in the stadium instead of just playing the prerecorded track directly on the TV feed.
As a Braves fan I'm excited to get Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuna back. My worry is that Acuna is the next Mike Trout - a generational player that just can't stay healthy
I take comfort in knowing that in the coming decades the Dodgers will be so broke because of the deferrals that they'll be paying league minimum for most of their 40-man roster.
I agree we shouldn't have paid Bowen to stay, I just don't see how we can get massive increase from the next guy. Why would a OC come here if it's better to pay the players, ever other P4 is doing that too.
Looking at the OCs from last season the ones that had better offenses than us basically are WVU, WSU, UofL, and JMU (BSU OC quit football) that we can out bid. Both Clemson and Wake had worse offenses than us last season.
I am extremely skeptical we are going to get some one that is a big increase from him. Now maybe Moore coaching the offensive line makes that an much easier job and we have a better offense but it's hard to say Bowen wouldn't have done better with a competent line.
Yeah, of course everyone pays more than us, we currently pay $0. Previously we paid a guy who's probably a JAG coordinator with unrealized upside what he's worth. If we paid him more, we'd be overpaying him. That salary puts us in the market for a good coordinator. Last year only Clemson, Wake, and UNC paid over $1 million for an OC. That number has gone up, but not only can we afford to pay over $1 million, but maybe the incoming OC realizes that money is better spent on players than on themselves.

I think the Dodgers are even worse than even the Yankees were. At least the turn of the century Yankees won with a largely home-grown roster that was smartly assembled with clutch players. The Dodgers just buy MVPs and jam them into their lineup.
It's obvious that baseball is going to have to adopt some kind of hard salary cap to retain any sort of competitive balance.

Living in Peru, I have grown to love the flavor of the Peruvian lime which I use to make Limeade with Bolivian stevia which is available here in large quantities. Two flavors you cannot typically get in the States but the stevia has no chemical aftertaste and the limes here are very high in acidity and taste superior to the Mexican "key limes" that you can buy in the States. In the winter here it's hot tea with the same stevia. I sometimes use carbonated water with the limeade just to enjoy a little fizz in my local beverage.
I loved it as well but yeah this was a love it or hate it choice for sure. If you were not already a Kendrick Lamar fan or hip hop fan in general then of course it was not something you would enjoy.

My feel for it was that he took a performance that was designed for his fans and copy/pasted it into the superbowl halftime show. There were millions of people who got all the easter eggs, knew all the references, etc, and probably tens of millions more who are hip hop fans who appreciated it.
But there were 100 million people who were completely out of the loop.
This was not a pop music performance. Personally, I enjoyed this more than any halftime show pre-2020 (except for Prince and Beyonce - they were the exceptions).

In theory, that won't happen as they are making money by not spending it now in order to better afford the payment in the future.
If you have $10M in the bank, and you agree to pay your employee $10M over 5 years, but defer that payment to $200K per year for 5 years, then $1M per year for the 9 years after, you essentially have $9M that you can invest to make money for yourself over the next 5 years, $8M over 6 years, $7M over 7 years, etc. That's why the Ohtani deal is so favorable to the Dodgers. They could pay it now, but by not paying it now, they will get richer off of it.
But, I guess, a major economic recession or changes in MLB rules could change that. There is definitely more uncertainty and risk by writing deals this way. But it's way more likely LA will get richer off a deal like this.
