I'm pretty sure it was going to be on from day 1, no matter what.
Edit: Upvote for the overreaction redaction
This guy has been a defensive coordinator before, and done well at it.
He also has four years of NFL coaching experience.
He may well be able to pull this off, and he'll have Bud helping out. All he has to do (heh, heh) is make the defense better. Won't surprise me if he's able to do that.
I like that it's not a failed P2 coordinator.
Yes that was the argument for Marve, bring some one you have mentored a while amd let him grow into the position over 14 years.
Ha ha.
I've met this guy.
My 5 minute impression, for what it's worth. (Not much, I know...)
Very intelligent. VERY intense. Lives and breathes football and defense and schemes, but also seemed relatable.
Is it a splash hire? Hell no. Was it our first choice? I seriously doubt it. Could it be an awesome hire? Could be.... Could it be a bust and take down Pry and Whit.... yes.
A little back story: met him on a recruiting visit years back when my son was making the rounds.
He was touted as a great new defensive mind, but new, young and untested.
Gonna be an interesting ride....
Go Hokies.
After a nearly seven-week search, the #Hokies threw a curveball with their defensive coordinator hire, officially naming Arizona Cardinals LB coach Sam Siefkes for the role.https://t.co/KGdmjfFrFrโ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) January 27, 2025
Yeah he wasn't anywhere close to the radar for me.
But ok, let's see if it works
Let's give him a shot.
As someone who works at a company that got really into hiring "experienced people with good resumes" and living the reality that the mid-career people that got hired are much more capable than the "resume allstars" .... I am glad that we didn't go after a failed P2 DC
I think everyone exhausted themselves with 1.5 months of what-ifs and nobody knows anything about this guy to react
The VT Football Official Facebook Page post is 26 minutes into being online, and there still isn't a single comment. I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. ๐
We got one of the best known OL coaches in the country a couple years ago and it meant essentially nothing to our program.
I would like to be more familiar with Sam but he will either get our D where it needs to be or he won't.
Frankly, I give his NFL endorsements more weight than some other guys defensive ranks 7 years ago.
About the only thing he doesn't bring are connections with players that might transfer this spring.
In the meantime, go Sam! Go Hokies!
And the hatred that many people - not here, but certainly on LinkedIn - voice against unpaid internships is really short-sited and irrational. They can give people who might never get a chance in a new field or area a chance. It's not like companies are going to put these people in key, long-term roles. They were short and give people a shot. Sure, there are places that abuse the system. But word will get out fast and those companies won't be able to do it for long. As long as you are not doing unskilled manual labor, where it would be easy to take advantage of people short-term, I really think making companies pay limits people's opportunities more than the benefit that you get from getting modest pay for 3 or 4 months.
Good to hear you still offer people opportunities to prove themselves.
Let's Go Hokies! May the Pry/Siefkes defense make VT the Terrordome for the opposition once more.
All of the fans upset now will be more upset later when he leaves but remember the welcome you gave him! This is a really good hire and under the radar for sure. Remember this post so I don't have to bring it up later on down the road because I will. A lot of you do not realize what we just got, lightning in a bottle!
Knowing nothing about him beyond what was in the other thread, I'm in wait-and-see mode. Suggest we all keep our heads level, wish him luck and hope for the best.
Anyone have an image of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel?
I have no other option to assume we will not be good defensively until he can show out in Atlanta and give me hope (if we win or a close loss that falls on poor offensive performance) #ForeverPessimism
I know what my knee jerk reaction is to say.
That said, I hope he does well because there's a lot on the line, man.
COOKED
I think on the positive side you can say
1) In the other threads people found reasons to doubt the perceived favorite candidates. I think all of them except Tim Banks has multiple negative comments and he was pretty unrealistic.
2) Linebacker was the position the Hokies have been the worst at and an NFL LB coach should be able to help with that
3) Pry has gone outside of his scheme and found someone working on an innovative scheme
On the probably stronger negative side:
1) Very little real experience as a recruiter or coordinator
2) No idea how he will be able to mesh with what Pry wants to do unless Pry has decided to go way more hands off with the D
3) If it is the latter this seems pretty late to make sure they have the personnel to run what he wants
I'll be very interested to see what Virginia Tech and Pry lead with as justification. I'm also curious if VT stacking the safety room in the transfer portal means Pry has been looking at 3-high guys all along. Although that seems unlikely. Ultimately I wish this was a hire that was giving confidence instead of curiosity.
Figured I would start a new thread since it is officially posted on Hokiesports now and we can talk about it as something that is occurring instead of a potential
It's over finally. So we got that going for us.
With probably the worst collection of defensive talent in the NFL.
A little more detail as to why Pry and team are targeting Siefkes.
https://clk.hokiesports.com/e/es?s=2977661&e=100389&elqTrackId=4e4927f9b...
Under Siefkes' guidance, the Cardinals finished 2024 ranked among the NFL's top defenses in several categories, including:
6th in Opponent Second Half Points Per Game
8th in Opponent Red Zone Scoring Percentage
10th in Opponent Offensive Touchdowns
11th in Opponent Yards Per Completion
12th in DVOA (Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average)
14th in Opponent Offensive Points Per Game

Being a (cough, cough, looking both ways side eyed) Vikings fan... I'm happy for the accolades from Mike Zimmer and Kevin O'Connell. Hope Mr. Siefkes works out.
