Pry did say that it's unlikely Drones plays in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Jan. 3 against Minnesota in Charlotte, while Da'Quan Felton, Antwaun Powell-Ryland, and Aeneas Peebles, all who declared for the NFL Draft in April, will not play in the game, which is not surprising. In terms of Bhayshul Tuten and Dorian Strong, they still have a decision to make to wear the Tech uniform or not one more time against the Golden Gophers.
Looks like the NFL guys will not be playing. Defensive Line will be interesting.

Drones has a pretty live arm but has really struggled with accuracy. Pop seems to be a more polished passer and is quicker and more decisive in reading the field. As far as running ability, they're really two different styles. With Drones, you're going to be doing more inverted veer/QB power/sweep type designed runs toward the middle of the field. He has speed and momentum once he gets going, but a great comparison is Logan Thomas. He's like a freight train to bring down but doesn't have the initial burst and acceleration to get to the edge in a true read option offense. Pop fits that to a tee - that dude can straight fly. He might be one of the fastest players on the field when he's out there. But he's smaller and you can't use him as a battering ram like Drones. But frankly, I don't really want my QB running up the gut a ton anyhow. A QB with speed to threaten the edge when he pulls a handoff back from the RB is far more dangerous IMO. Have to get a great OL coach who can improve our downhill run game with the RB to take that off the QBs plate.

I agree. You could tell the good ones because they would quickly understand that they did not know shit and find a good petty officer to learn the trade.
I consider accuracy part of physical attributes. Pop is more accurate and I think has better overall arm talent than Drones. He's also faster, and while he can't 3rd & Logan like Drones can, I think the combination of his running and throwing abilities open up more options than Drones.
Coaches want to win, too. They have resumes to build.... IF I were a coach looking to move up I'm looking at my colleagues and their ability to deliver on their assignments as well, and I'm not taking a job where my job is more difficult because I have to work harder to makeup for my colleague's ineffectiveness. Now as a potential incoming DC I'm looking at a team with 2 returning QBs and an offense capable of putting up 30+ points every week, and my job is just to keep the scoring under 4 TDs... Sounds like a decent place to land for an aggressive DC, at least on the surface.

Late to the thread, but I'm just happy that Pry recognized and had the guts to make the change. That was probably the biggest concern on the boards all season in that the collective recognized the need for the change but had reservations that anything would be done about it. That first part is done and we declared we are making some changes. The bonus here is that Pry doesn't screw-up the follow through and can hire the right people to have immediate impact.

he never talked about it, and he died when I was very young, but my dad was in the army. he ran the electrical grid (MS EE '95) for public works at nswc for a number of years though, where the go navy comes in.

Gameday went to every one from 2000-2020. They also went last year.
One thought I'm thinking about more and more with DC - it sounds like Bud is going to be involved for the bowl game and is rumored to have a more involved role with the staff moving forward (maybe like an assistant to the HC/defensive Jerry Kill role). If we have that, I could see Pry going after Anthony Poindexter to be his DC. Dex isn't exactly a heavily experienced DC as compared with Shoop or Ash, but he has far more experience than Marve did and is familiar with Pry's system. With Bud potentially in the fold to assist with game planning that eases a lot of concerns as well. Plus, Dex could also coach safeties with PP reassigned to a more off the field role again. There were also a lot of rumors and reports that Pry was pursuing Poindexter to be his DC originally when he was hired. So there may be some smoke here if there were conversations previously.
The recruiting ties to VA keep making me think that could be a very high ceiling hire for us as well. If we can start pulling top tier regional defensive players away from PSU and Clemson, we can start to build ourselves into an ACC and CFP contender. There's certainly risk (as there is with all of these hires), but this could be a very high reward proposition. At a minimum, Dex is far more experienced and a way better recruiter than Marve, so it's an instant upgrade. And it would be a huge blow to dear old James at PSU, which hurts them and helps us. There's no way he can pay to retain Dex unless he makes him his outright DC, which he has been unwilling to do thus far.

One thing Pry seems to be doing well is keeping the players we WANT to stay. Who have we had that left that's wound up being a good contributor at another P4 school? People leaving due to tough conversations isn't a bad thing.
Pat White was like 6'0" 180 his freshman year, put on 25 lbs in 4 years. So Pop is similar size.
