The problem is that their goal was never to come up with the best way to determine a champion, it was always just to get rich as fuck.
BCS I think was definitely better than the current system as I think too much of the "human element" in the form of the selection committee just leads to greed and politics/bias. You can't have a playoff where there is no clear criteria to qualify whatsoever. It's just a complete beauty contest right now designed to generate big tv ratings.
You have to make conference championships the main auto-qualifier for the playoff. Throw in a couple at large teams if you wish to make it compelling, but champions need to have auto births regardless of conference and ranking. If the best team on paper trips up and loses, too bad too sad try again next year. There's too much emphasis on trying to rig the whole system to get a big tv drawing matchup instead of just letting things play out on the field. All champions being included makes the regular season and postseason equally compelling, because literally every game matters.
But the problem is, since the D1 FBS postseason is basically run by corporate tv networks and the conferences are all parties to it separately, there is an incentive for the conferences that feel like they are more important to rig the deal and try to get more spots and ultimately money. I think some collective bargaining agreements and more conferences with smaller membership numbers and round robin play would make the whole system better with automatic bids for champions. But ultimately cash is the reason we are headed for this hellscape in the sport and I don't see it being fixed any time soon. It's frankly going to take the non P2 schools who get left out of this scheme just completely walking away and not watching to make things change and the tv networks to feel it.

My stance: The BCS era was far superior to the playoff era and the playoff era is absolutely torpedo-ing the sport. But it didn't have to be this way. I was absolutely in favor of a playoff at the time the idea was being floated but the instant it was announced and they didn't make championship a requirement to get in I knew it was flawed and destined to fail. I've been yelling about it for years.
The sport could have been so much better but they missed one key element and now everything sucks.
Gotta read the fine print on that SEC tagline:

I'm with you here. There are some neat things that can be done with this. Student takeover is a solid idea. The ability to upgrade your non-con tickets is also a good idea. But this whole thing was executed in the most VT athletics way possible and now we have the lowest attended games in recent history.

Gregg is still boys with several in the front office, so at least it shows he's not fully turned his back on the guys on the pitch. That's something. But still funny.

Man, I wish it was the only way to get in. Instead, because 'it just means more', now you have SEC coaches openly admitting they don't want to play in the SEC title game so they can keep national title hopes alive.

World class reporting here. I'm sure this is the unfettered truth. If it is, shame on Fuente not Ballein.
I don't think Pry and his staff are going to be the group that leads VT back to relevance. Seen enough, don't think they have it. However, for as much as everyone wants to blame Whit or Ballein, they are discounting just how hard it is to hire the right staff. There is no formula. Everyone uses hindsight to say that Fuente and his staff were G5 guys and didn't know how to run a P5 program. Well Cignetti took his FCS turned G5 staff to Indiana and is doing just fine. Plenty of coaches with P5 head coaching experience don't work out. Schools with way more resources that VT spent years in the desert:
Tennessee, Texas, Oregon, Michigan, Florida, FSU, Auburn, Nebraska, Miami, USC
All of these schools have had 5-20 year periods of bad to mediocre football in the last 20 years. They burned through money, coaches, and ADs trying to rebuild a decent football program. Great coaches are special and most them are not identifiable in advance. It is with hindsight that the ones that work our seem like slam dunks but for every Cignetti there are 10 Justin Fuente and Brent Pry.

So far what I am picking up here is the Manny is a quitter, is not very attractive, has odor and jewelry related issues, and coaches at a school that does not care that he has these problems because its not basketball.

Agree. We had Jamaica on their heels for most of the game. Lots of pressure in the final third and we probably should have had a couple more goals. There were a few well placed crosses to Pepi that he whiffed on.
I didn't realize he was still in the league. Hopefully it goes well this time.
