Can we just dispense with the pleasantries and start calling it the ass-kicker position?
You act like the offense stopped playing when they got 24 points, the point totals for most of 2007 say differently. I look at it as coach saying. "Listen guys, we put up AT LEAST 24 points we win EVERY game. Can you go out and get me those 24 points, sadly the offense could not many times.
don't ask me how I know
...but...how do you know?
The defense has been and will continue to be better than the defense last year. Let's just say, aside from the injuries last year, there was also a difference of opinion on what coverage the d-backs would be in (don't ask me how I know). That difference of opinion has been solved by the incoming staff. We will be just fine this year and beat ECU by 20+. GO HOKIES!!
still not seeing it, I see it in the week 2 & 3 results, but not overall
I have a yuge problem with a coach who says "Get me X number of points and we'll win," because that's just asking for your defense to get gassed and lose the game late. There should never be a target number at which you turtle the offense, because insane comebacks happen.
The only correct answer for "How much should the offense score?" is "More."
But, taking your premise that our issue was failing to meet an arbitrary threshold of points, why do you think that happened? I would put my money on it being directly attributable to the "just enough" mindset that permeated our offense. You can't expect players to turn it on and off like a switch, and when you approach offense with that mindset, it makes it that much harder for the offense to answer the bell.

# | Despite Isaiah Ford's Daring End Zone Grab, Justin Fuente Hoping to Rein in Jerod Evans Against ECU I didnt think the throw to Ford was so risky necessarily. He put it in a good spot and it worked out well, but what do I know. And we need to put a nice thrashing to ECU to quell any ideas of a "rivalry" with the Pirates. I actually have a lot of respect for the Pirates, but should not be a question mark on our schedule.

More teams are doing the 4-2-5 these days, so no we're not. That being said we might be the best at it though
This basically reaffirms much of what we always thought about our offensive struggles. Running the clock out and relying on the defense to win was a winning strategy in football for many, many years. In fact, it still is a great way to minimize turnovers, win the time of possession, and win a football game. But the days of stifling, shutdown defenses are becoming increasingly rare. The offensive game has evolved, and teams are utilizing the spread option, wide open passing, and tempo to keep defenses on their heels. If you're not prepared to score in today's game, you're very likely going to lose. Even Alabama's vaunted defense has shown vulnerability to mobile QBs and spread attacks in recent years. They have even evolved their offense under Kiffin.
We were unfortunately unwilling to adapt to the modern game under Beamer. Hall of Fame coach and even better person, but this was the biggest flaw of his tenure.
Moooooooooooook!!!!!!!!!!!
As long as we stay close to who we are, I could care less. I mean everything we have worn still represents Tech. It could always be worse...

To me it's also an issue of mindset. You come into a game thinking you only have to score 3 times, there has to be a reduced sense of urgency. I'd rather have a team come onto the field thinking they need to score every drive. You can relax when they sit the first string in the 4th quarter.
That A) 24 points was clearly enough points to win many games B) if the team HAD scored 24 points in more games they would have won. I have no issues with a coach who says get me X number of points every game and we will win. The issue became the team couldn't score X number of points consistently.
I love these
I'd up my contribution even more if one of the rewards was getting a workout in at our basketball or football weight rooms.
in reference to Sandusky? oooooh
