# | How good does the VT offense really need to be? -- UPDATED Look at the points we gave up per game from 2004-2007. Its a goddamn crime those defenses never played for a National Title. Those years alone should have had the offensive staff fired. 1 TD per quarter (28 points a game) over that entire stretch would have had us at 46-2 combined. We couldn't even do that with some of the most talent we've ever had on the offensive side of the ball.
I don't really see this as that absurd. We're talking about starting a true freshman qb and lost a lot of contributors off of a team that won 6 regular season games last season and plays basically every tough game away from home and has a generally tougher schedule. I think we win 6 games but I think 6th place is fairly reasonable for a prediction, though one I see us beating. Have to keep in mind he's a national guy, doubt he really paid that much attention to anyone on our team other than Isaiah Ford, McMillon ran for 1000 yards but he's like at best the 4th best rb in the ACC. We love Bucky and he's full of potential but he's still never done anything that amazing, I don't think 500 yards receiving really strikes that much fear or awe into people. So I can definitely see where he says we don't have much returning excitement
I think Pitt and UNC are the top 2 in the Coastal, could go either way for them. Pitt does get back James Conner though and returns pretty much everyone else of note. UNC might have the most offensive firepower out of anyone in the league not named Clemson, but their defense still sucks. Miami has Kaaya and not much else thats done anything so far. I don't see it with Duke and GT but I guess we did lose to Duke last year at home and GT still has Justin Thomas.
Never underestimate the comedic value of things that LOLUVA puts out.

We could do nothing against Clemson's defense both games. I remember David Wilson being quoted saying 'everywhere I went, they (Clemson) were there. It was like they knew were I was going....'
Remember, former VT coach and Clemson player Danny Pearman was back at Clemson.
And even before that season, there were rumors of 'tells' that other teams were keying on.
I'm not saying the Tigers cheated, I'm saying they used what they knew and we were stupid to not change, and moronic to not change up in the Championship game.
Clemson was good that season, but not THAT good..twice! (Just ask WVU....at least they looked at the film's and game planned differently.)
From this you can pretty clearly see it, more times than not, a Bud Foster Defense, even in the current form, is going to limit our opponents to a maximum of between 31 and 35 points in all games, and somewhere between 26 and 31 points in ACC play.
That's...a lot of points to give up.
Just score more points than the other team.
No one said his offense was air raid. I'm pretty sure in other threads it's been documented that Fuentes offense runs the ball more than Tech's did, or the same. The other flip side to the argument about the D on the field more, is the number of 3 and outs the O has put up in the last several years. That's been documented in other threads as well that Fuente's O has less 3 and outs as well. That is a more accurate barometer of how much time the D is on the field.

# | How good does the VT offense really need to be? -- UPDATED Ehhh... This also assumes that the VT offense in the past was good at keeping the defense off the field, and with the rate we struggled to consistently pick up first downs, I'm not so sure that's truly the case.
Plus, while the Fuente offense is hurry up, its not Oregon levels of fast. He will slow it down to protect the defense when its necessary to do so, and will practice and train for doing that. I wouldn't expect to see the defense suffer directly because we develop a potent offense. If anything, we'll see similar to better TOP than we did in the past, just with more offensive drives ending in points.
The thing that jumps out to me on the first graph is how dominating the 2006 defense was. Four shutouts. We've only had four shutouts since 2006.
If they would have won they would have won the division. It was actually a pretty hyped game.

# | How good does the VT offense really need to be? -- UPDATED Yes this would include all scores for the opposing team, so it would include any direct points off of turnovers and the like, so there of course could be some leeway in those numbers. The above totals were pure raw numbers, as I really didn't have the time to do a deep dive like that (though, I would heavily caution doing that too much, because it would be a lot to ask to expect our team to not have any miscues over the course of a given season)

Remember that Fosters D will not be as good as it has been, mostly because it Fuente gets his O up and running to his standards our D will be spending a lot more time on the field. I would estimate many a shootout in the future, with Bud's group hopefully getting one or two key stops each game to keep us ahead. Unless of course we develop a running game to go with a air raid attack...
We have some concerns that should keep us humble:
1. QB -- Having 3 still in play this late isn't a great feeling. I could see us committing to Jackson, which could be longterm gain for shortterm pain.
2. LB -- Not only is there a serious lack of depth, but there is still the Motu concerns. I'm of the opinion that he's fine, not great. But there are others who believe he's the worst LB in the ACC. No depth behind Edmunds at Backer.
3. DB -- Mostly a depth concern, I like the starters but two injuries and we're sunk on the backside.
4. DE -- Mostly an inexperience concern, good talent and decent depth, but not much on-the-field experience for those guys beyond Ekanem.
5. TB shuffle -- I don't know what's going on here and as much as I am concerned about upsetting The Sam Rogers, I'm not sure I want him as the starting tailback (which he may be).
6. QB -- Worth noting a second time.
I'm leaning towards 9-3 at this time with loses to ND, UT and UNC. But that assumes that Fuente doesn't have the issues that Beamer had in recent seasons about losing games he shouldn't. We have about 9 loseable games, to assume we go 6-3 is bettering our recent seasons by a game or two.
Or if we get a system that allows an average QB to get above-average play.....
Looking at the Coastal, UNC Pitt and Miami have brutal schedules, I think we might have an easier run just because of the timing, not necessarily the caliber.

then our toughest run I think with Miami on a short week but its at home on Thursday night

They introduced the 2 new trucks.
"Due to storage capacity, the food trucks will serve a predefined number of meals per day, as they're made to sell out. Lunch will be served Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or until food runs out. Dinner will be served in the Oak Lane community Sunday to Wednesday, from 5 to 9 p.m. or until food runs out. The food trucks will park on Alumni Mall for late night service Thursday to Saturday, from 8 p.m. to midnight or until food runs out. The experience will be enhanced by music from a top-of-the-line speaker system and LED lights illuminating the truck.
The two trucks will be located in underserved areas across campus. Tentative locations include the parking lot between Hahn, Derring, and Pamplin halls; Goodwin Hall circle; Litton-Reaves/Life Sciences 1 access drive; and Southgate/Sterrett Street area. These locations are subject to change based on customer traffic.
In addition, the trucks will be parked in Hokie Village at multiple home football games. In time, The Grillfield and Periodic Table will be available for special occasions and catering for campus events."
