He was never even really given the chance to prove that because our depth was so bad, JMO.
Uniforms absolutely matter UNLESS you are a true blue blood program like Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, etc. Millennials really, really care about uniforms (I would know, I am one...). The previous AD really doomed us with a bad Nike contract. It's weak even in comparison to schools on our level.
Coale's speed was also much better than many accounted for. He was an excellent ACC WR.
Honestly, I didn't think Willie Byrn was that good. Decent underneath guy that got more looks because the WR talent was so abysmal before Ford and Phillips joined the team.
Coale was a good football player, and got open in large part due to the VT commitment of the running game. The scheme was never particularly impressive, but defenses had to devote so much energy to stopping the Ryan Williams, Darren Evans, and David Wilson's of the world that it opened a bunch of stuff up. When you watch the 2010 ACC title game, so much of Coale being open was due to FSU's safeties being drawn out of position by the VT run game and Taylor's ability to extend plays.
Keihn got moved to DE because he wasn't a P5 LB. Unfortunately he wasn't a P5 DE either.
I worry if anyone can get the fundraising right if Whit can't.... his bread and butter is in fundraising, and if he can't turn it around... I'm not sure anyone can
I didn't see Buzz leaving for a 2nd tier Big12 job and I don't see Whit Babcock doing it either.
The biggest problem I see for keeping Whit Babcock (and for VT athletics as a whole going forward) is if phase 2 of Whit's program to dramatically increase athletics revenues fails due to a lack of alumni/fan/regional business willingness to participate at the level needed to make VT competitive on par with the top athletic programs in the country.
I was hoping for more of an established hire here, but again, this is where the amount allotted currently to assistants salaries may have played a role. I love the fact that Webster got a couple years under his belt with Tommy Amaker( a Virginia native) both as coach and as player and the stop off at UCF I wont hold against him, as it was an underperforming program well before he got there. His enthusiasm for the job and community seem genuine so thats a plus but I would have rather seen us get someone a bit more established in the AAU community as well as having had stints at a couple more high profile programs especially if we continue to have to deal with the year in, year out cycle of "Will Buzz leave?" Better to have a few strong contenders for the head job in house if possible. Webster really needs to show me something this season, especially if he ends up coaching the bigs.
Probably because Joe Flacco never seems seemed to get injured. The Ravens knew they had a good backup who cost them very little salary (by NFL standards) and weren't about to trade him away just for his own good. And nobody else in the league was going to offer any players of value for a backup that had never proven himself in the League. Tyrod's only shot at a starting gig was to wait for Flacco to get injured or wait for his rookie contract to expire.

My understanding is that it can be, particularly if a coach has playing experience (ie sam cassell was a guard and taught the wizards guards, patrick ewing working with big men); that being said, no one is really a "big man's coach" specifically, especially because basketball is moving to be less position specific (i also imagine that it's not a great way to market yourself for head coaching gigs if you're seen as more of a niche coach).

I view Whit and Buzz the same way. As happy as I am that they are Hokies, I feel like it's inevitable that a bigger program will swoop them up. For those guys is a business move and I respect that.
Yeah, Kirby will be a big hit. They needed to move on from Richt in the worst way.
I'm a huge Broncos fan and I was pretty excited when rumors started leaking that Elway was considering a trade for Tyrod. Ultimately they went a different route and drafted Paxton Lynch in the first round. I guess that kind of counts, right?
So I think I'm following you. The assistant coaches assist the coach. What's with first, second, third assistant? Is that just a pay thing? Do some coaches assign roles more than others, like "big man coach" mentioned above, or recruiting guru, etc, or is it usually all in on everything?

Forget the Heisman. Everyone knows the award lineman covet most is the Piesman Trophy. I think our boy Tim has a good shot at it this year.
