Splitting hairs but the 2014 was exceptional as well. A far cry from "continuing struggles" on field.
one down year and its looking very likely that 16 could also be a down year.. then lets go to the recruiting board and look at all the defensive talent in the state of VA that Bud and Charley have whiffed on in the last 4 years. The main point is if recruiting doesn't pick up then those top 5 defenses go back to middle of the pack defenses real quickly.
19th in Def. S&P+ in 2012
3rd in Def. S&P+ in 2013
10th in Def. S&P+ in 2014
40th in Def. S&P+ in 2015
35 Sacks in 2012
39 Sacks in 2013
48 Sacks in 2014
26 Sacks in 2015
That's a huge drop from 2014 to 2015 in both categories.. one that doesn't paint a good picture about VT's defense.
To be fair we heard how many programs would kill to have Bryan Stinespring or Cornell on their staffs as well. I know BF is in another category and would definitely find another P5 job, but I don't think he'd land at a blue blood or school of that caliber anymore.
btw we had the 4th ranked defense in '13, 21st in '14 and 44th in '15.

Side note at the Battle of Bristol we should wear AllMaroonEverything and Tennessee should wear AllOrangeEverything
then you use the other tired excuses like bagmen, resources, etc.
All of our guys are underrated until they don't do anything on the field and then they were rated just fine. Diablo was the only one you list that could have pushed for a 4th star IMO. Last year's class was not good.
but if that side of the ball continues to recruit poor and struggles on the field then you have to cut ties and search for new
Did Bud not just put together back to back top 5 defenses in '13 and 14'? One down year in '15, which was average at worst, and its time to consider replacing him? Do you know how many programs would kill for Foster? We certainly aren't making a better hire than him
I'll give you one out of three.
so what happens when the primary and secondary recruiter have both been at VT since 1996 or later like Bud and Charley have?

The New Orleans Saints announced today that they have signed DE Darryl Tapp and waived tight end Jack Tabb. The announcements were made by Saints' Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis
Great job!
I think you may be under-estimating the advantage several other teams had over with less turnover. Many of the 4 and 5 * players have been recruited by a position coach at least for at least a few years now, and have a comfortable relationship with each other. I'm not saying this is what happened with Garbutt, but when you are relatively new and unproven, and can see many of the adults in the teenager's life recommending a little of a wait and see approach with the new coaches in a new relationship. Lets not panic, produce on the field, continue to provide one of the top atmospheres in CFB, and continue to build relationships. I feel confident that if Fu cannot get it going in a few years Whit will hit the reset button, but saying this proves Fu can't recruit made bad hires on his staff is very pre-mature.
Think the bigger issue is people are tired of seeing Bud and Charley constantly miss out on recruits. They're not new they should be able to sell "Blacksburg" the surroundings and the defensive game plan. The defensive depth chart is pretty poor and full of unknowns which for a p5 school shouldn't be the case.
Yeah we have a new sheriff in town but he should close the deals and sell the program as a whole. However if Bud and Charley can't even sell a recruit while being the position coach Fuente is pretty much SOL.
Fuente was in a tough spot and wanted to keep some familiarity with keeping Bud and Charley, but if that side of the ball continues to recruit poor and struggles on the field then you have to cut ties and search for new. Have to take it year by year and work it out.
I'm not saying break the bank on an all-star staff. I know VT isn't the wealthiest football program, but you make it sound like we're literally down to our last dollar in every aspect of athletics. We had a budget to hire AT LEAST ONE big name, proven recruiting assistant coach with ties to the area. One or two more proven guys at the power 5 level. I really question the Scott and Shibest hires at their salary level. Fuente went with who he felt comfortable with over proven big time experience.
Popular it certainly seems to be, but popular doesn't mean it isn't crap to many of us.
he can't recruit on the road but once a recruit gets on campus he sure as hell can talk to them and convince them BAMA is the place to be.
I'd put his job as a "closer" once kids get on campus..
Disagree that 2016 was underwhelming. Repost of post 2016 signing day post...
...looking at offers, a lot of these guys were underrated IMHO. Not sure how guys like Denmark, Diablo, Moore, Kumah, Jimmie Taylor, etc are not 4* per Rivals. So, really could have been a class of seven 4* and three 3/4* out of 21.
Point being this is a much better class than at first glance. Just too much emphasis/ diappointment being placed on inability to 'flip' guys.

It doesn't really matter if that is the worst thing he is called in Hokie Nation. I always try to post as if the person were reading it themselves and I'd say anything I have said or giffed to that person face to face. And it really doesn't help to point fingers at others in Hokie Nation and say we can do it because they are too! That's childish. I love the humor on TKP because it's usually tongue in cheek and not terribly offensive to an individual but you're being childish.
Not a coach. So he can't do that much recruiting anymore. Finding guys yea but he can't visit correct?
Considering the use of "Butts" around here as a term of exasperation or frustration, it was simply an easy way to express the same while being a little playful. Pretty sure this kid has endured worse while growing up; I doubt my one lame, smartass portmanteau/comment is going to be what sends him into therapy, regardless of what sideline he's on.
I love ND uniforms. There are only three ways that football uniforms should look:
1:

2:

3:

SPOILER ALERT: Its not gonna be good.
Definitely thought it was a peanut with an eye for more than a couple seconds

But seriously, making fun of a recruits name? Please, we're above that. Now, if he signs with Pitt and he's sitting on their sideline/on the field for them, it's fair game.

Regarding unis, does anybody else feel like we need a different (better/more appealing) shade of orange so that we can distinguish better (in uni color) from LOLUVA? I feel that the orange has the potential danger of creating a mix up.
