Backing up Brian's small ball point, Villanova's tallest player was Daniel Ochefu at 6-11. The next tallest player was listed at 6-8.5, so they won the national championship with only one player over 6-9. Buzz's offense is a 1 in 4 out so he would play a guard heavy lineup. Basically Buzz isn't the only one with that style of lineup and it is possible to win big that way.
Men in Blazers once told a story about an interaction between Robin Williams and Blatter where Williams kept calling him "Seth". It eventually ground Blatter down and he stormed off saying "SCHTOP CALLING ME SETH!" If I'm not mistaken, that happened at the party after this:

First, there is no way this team is as talented as 2013's team was going in. That defense was stuffed with elite talent in the secondary, an NFL prospect at QB, and experienced upperclassman all over the depth chart with some promising sophomores sprinkled in.
This is a roster that with all of its experience has gone 7-6 the last two seasons. Thats facing a more challenging schedule than any of those teams. That plays 4 of its toughest 5 games on the road with the one at home coming against a QB some people think could go #1 overall in the draft. The team could very well be a better team and still go 6-6 or 7-5 again just as a result of the schedule

the dude is known for being a poacher, and speaking from experience that isnt that ridiculous of a volley to make. We're not talking about a 40 yarder from outside the box on a half bounce. we're talking about a ball that fell directly to his foot, he had the goalie off balance diving across the face of goal (also speaking from experience thats a damn near impossible save. what they teach in keeper school these days is basically for the love of god dive and hope you get something because its not your fault your defenders fudged up.) he didnt have to put that much power on it. OK if he puts the ball on frame and courtois makes a wonderful save, thats more understandable but YOU HAVE TO PUT THAT ON FRAME. I'm not saying we damn the dude's entire career for that, but he hasn't exactly been great outside of that opportunity. However I would agree that tim howard almost single handedly kept us in that game. the man was spectacular and we did not deserve to win. However if you ever have a poacher in that position I'd expect them to make that shot. I can list probably 50 players that would hit that 10 times out of 10
Nah, I'm going to continue to blame him for missing the shot the way he intended. I can't agree that it's nearly as complicated as you're making it sound. That should be a goal 100% of the time for a professional striker, especially one who's strength is poaching goals.
Depends on where you're coming from I suppose. From VB to Blacksburg it's usually about the same amount of time for me. That being said I burn significantly less gas taking 460.

that Michigan team had an easier schedule than VT. And despite the fact Michigan was seriously under performing prior to Harbaugh they still recruited really well. It's Michigan, for cryin' out loud. I don't think Harbaugh at Michigan should be the litmus test for Fuente at VT.
Based on everything I saw last year, if we have just minimal improvement (certainly there is room for much improvement) down low from a scoring & defensive standpoint the Hokies should be a very solid team next season.

We don't shy away from anyone. We haven't backed down and scheduled a NC State type OOC schedule. You are basically saying you just want to have a better team.
I think you're missing the point. I literally just said we don't shy away from anyone. When vtfly initially said that we used to have that "anyone anywhere" mentality, I think he meant it was visible on the field. Not just that we showed up.
Easy finish? There's a reason volleys and half volleys are generally considered for goals of the season. It's not like this was a tap it. Yes, he probably should have went for power, but when you see the goalkeeper out of the corner of your eye you think you have to get it over him. It's a difficult finish. It wasn't a ball on the ground that was a tap in.
If you want to blame him, blame him for not heading it in. Much easier finish to the far corner.

I'll honestly be disappointed if our offense doesn't take a step forward this year. I mean, its been so, so bad for so long it almost has to take a step forward, and I'll seriously be concerned about the future under Fuente if we see it stagnate this year like we have since... hell since Tyrod.
If that happens, everything else should fall into place for us. I really want to see what happens if we have an offense that allows Bud to get creative with the defense, knowing if a gamble backfires, the offense can and will make up for it.
Don't give them too much credit. ODU was probably still an FCS team when they scheduled them.
I wouldn't go so far as to say this is a deep team laden with huge talent. I'd say it's got a number of solid, yet similarly skilled, players at 2 positions - and several players can play both of those positions.
Well there are 12 scholarship players, four bigs, four wings and four point guards. That's pretty much the definition of depth. All of those "solid, yet similarly skilled" players play the 2, 3, 4, and at times 5. Having all of those athletic wings cause matchup nightmares.
As far as size goes it could be a problem against certain teams, but basketball as a whole is getting smaller. Gone are many lineups with seven footers, or two big/clunky shot blocker/rebounder types. It's headed to a place where you need a ton of versatile wings, which is exactly what they have.
This team is still going to need to rely on outworking opponents and playing to its strengths (and away from its limitations) rather than overwhelming them with talent to win games against above average competition.
That describes literally every college basketball team that isn't UNC, Duke, Kentucky, or Kansas. Just because Buzz doesn't have 14 McDonalds All-Americans, we can't say they're not talented? Yes they'll outwork people, but that doesn't say anything about their talent, just that they adopted the identity of their coach.
To play devil's advocate with the coaching turnover = growing pains theory, Harbaugh inherited a really bad Michigan team and turned them into a 10-win squad last year. Yeah, they had the doors blown off of them by OSU (far more skill position talent and depth everywhere), but Harbaugh tightened up the defense and played to the strengths of the talent they had on offense, and look where they ended up. Not saying that Fuente will have the same effect as Harbaugh, but if we can at least have a semi-functional offense that can move the chains and score effectively, and we get an average Bud Foster defense out of this group, I think we have a shot to be very successful. We may get the doors blown off going against FSU or Clemson, but I think we could easily compete for the Coastal if we get the above out of this year's team.
I really think your expectations are unrealistic. VT may have fewer question marks than some teams but of those teams how many have first year head coaches? Of those, how many have question marks at the most important position?
It boggles my mind that people don't understand there will be growing pains when there is coaching turnover. It would take a herculean effort for Fuente to accomplish your lofty expectations in his first year. Yes, he might have more talent and experience to work with than he did at Memphis. And VT might have more talent and experience than VT has had in a while but, honestly, that's not saying much. Given all those nice things, he still has to install a new system and develop a new starting QB. All the experience in the world won't make that much of a difference if the QB can't perform adequately. I just don't see how 8 wins should be our floor.
The missed time definitely didn't help, but he doesn't have much offensive skill yet. I don't think that's something you learn from playing during the season, it's something you learn in the offseason.
