I get what you are saying and agree to an extent, but I will always take a 3 point loss over a 15 point loss.
The last part of your comment proves the point that you're disagreeing with. Beating Tennessee and Notre Dame, but ending up at 2-10 is not going to do anything for VT other than a few minutes of "WTF" on Gameday the following week.
While UVA itself may not be nationally relevant, our streak against our main in-state rival is. The last few years on Gameday, when they start talking about rivalries and dominating streaks, VT (and Beamer) were near the top of that list, if not at the top.
We don't have the 10-win streak anymore, we don't have a string of conference championships, and we don't have the winningest active head coach. Hell, we don't even have a streak against Duke. What we do have is a bowl streak (which really only means that we've kept ourselves at or above .500 for 20-some years), and the Decade of Dominance + 2. And what that streak against UVA proves is that they can't even beat us in our bad years.

Unlike Buzz Williams, Fuente didn't inherit a dumpster fire. I'll be disappointed if he takes a roster with decent talent and experience and is unable to meet what I believe are reasonable expectations for that roster. And vice versa.

You're not going to get an opportunity much cleaner that far into the box. And I don't care how tough the play looks, he's paid to be one of the top scorers in the country, when you get that kind of opportunity, you have to capitalize. He literally trains his entire career for an opportunity like that, and he played the ball about as poorly as you could. He gagged.
The win expectancy numbers are an after-the-fact reflection of the likelihood a team would win a game given how they played statistically in that game. As a general rule teams that play well statistically also win the game. The better one plays statistically, the higher the likelihood of winning the game (and vice-versa).
The numbers don't represent how VT was expected to do in each game before-the-fact.
A better measure would be how VT did against the spread in terms of wins and losses. In 2015, I believe VT lost 3 games it was expected to win and won one it was expected to lose. So basically in a 1/3 of the games, the result was the opposite of the expected result by the betting public. However in games with a spread of 4 or less, I believe VT went 3-1.
I would say that the 2015 was somewhat hard to get a handle on - and IMO the inconsistency and inexperience created by injuries (and also how they impacted certain game match-up strengths and weaknesses) playing a significant role in that.

That being said, they haven't even sniffed a division title since joining the ACC 10 years ago, so their lack of fundraising has taken its toll.
Most arena football players have 9-5 day jobs. It's almost a glorified adult football league for ex-cons and roided out dudes with anger management issues.
i'd rather be 10-3 with a loss to UVA than 7-6 with a win over UVA. Anyday.
I'd rather keep any and all momentum away from Virginia for as long as we can. We think recruiting in Virginia is hard now, just allow UVa to roll off a win or two over us and then see how difficult it becomes. Their recruiting pockets run much, much deeper than ours.
If they go past UVA on their way to Blacksburg, I think they are doing it wrong. If I recall, 460 west straight in would be a faster approach.

I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Do I think 8 wins is our ceiling? No. Do I think it's reasonable to expect 8 wins and anything less would be disappointing? No.
You're always going to have growing pains when you have coaching turnover. We have a huge Question Mark at the most important position on the field (remember when we all thought Lawson was going to be the next best thing since sliced bread? what's to say Evans is any different? We have to accept that fact that there is a very real possibility that Motley is the best QB on the roster right now).
I would be happy with 8 wins but I honestly think that would be overachieving for Fuente in his first year as HC. I'll be satisfied if we make it back to a bowl game. Anything better than 6 wins will make me happier.
So, we are addressing different things here. The UT and ND games are for national spotlight. The UVA game is for control of Virginia. I'm sure you remember that UVA, despite sucking down Zima and various cheeses at tailgates (which is an abomination to man, have a damn burger or brat for Beamer's sake), have been able to recruit some serious talent even with mediocre records. To me, a singular slip up tilts the narrative in Virginia for the 2018, 2019, and 2020 class that serious in state players should consider UVA over VT.
History doesn't matter in state when there are two new coaches. In all honesty, we got a lot of our recruits because Beamer was a legend to them. Fuente doesn't have that going. He was hot for a few year at Memphis and now it's put up or shut up time. New coaches can't rest on laurels. His bowl streak with VT is at 0. He hasn't won any ACCCG with VT. He's never beat UVA (unless we count the Memphis - BYU game because they won twice that night, the game and the brawl).
McGurk asked what I would do if I was Fuente. I responded what I would do. I don't think a Natty would be reasonable to say I would get immediately. I'm not going to avoid it, but if I win the ACC, I'm at least in the conversation to take my boys to the CFBPO.

Great article Brian. I think this team is very talented. And let us all remember that talent alone, does not translate to winning games. If that was true, then Kentucky would win every game. It is about talent and the ability to play as a team and I do think this team is just as talented as Butler when they went to finals and I know our coach is just as good, now all we need to do is to leaarn how to play great team basketball and last year they proved they can do that. This years team, I believe will surprise a lot of people.
Agree with the first part, disagree with the 2nd. Beating a nationally relevant team is more important IMO than losing to a cellar dweller even if it's an in-state rival. I don't think Bronco is going to become a recruiting powerhouse unless VA suddenly has an all Mormon top 10.
If we hadn't lost 5 UVAesque games in 2014 we would have had a lot more going for us coming off of the OSU win.
I think this season you may see alot of Seth Allen in that second position rather than Bibbs. Buzz just seemed to have more trust in Allen with the ball, especially to create opportunities and Bibbs unfortunately hasnt shown that drive inside very often to make me think he will supplant Allen unfortunately.

Allen/Bibbs
Chris Clarke/Ahmed Hill
Ty Outlaw/Kerry Blackshear
Zach Leday/Kerry Blackshear
Whichever of these that Blackshear enters for, Blackshear would assume the "center" role while the other holding down the Power Forward role. Regardless, it makes it easy to see why Hudson decided to transfer though. He would have at best been the third option at the 2 or the 3 spot. Hell its scary to think that between Hill, Clarke and Outlaw we likely have to have one of them on the bench at all times.
Any word yet on Buzz naming a new assistant? Getting close to a big recruiting window for evaluating talent, especially on the AAU circuit so I would expect to see something soon.
This team has more experienced talent than any of the last 3 seasons. Plus the injury bug was pretty bad the last 3 seasons. I think Beamer wins at least 8 games with this team/schedule and anything less than 8 wins is a disappointment IMO.
And those things happen in every game. A post here, a phenomenal save there, a bad touch and a missed call. Yes, that's the difference between a win and a loss/draw, but that's part of the game too. It's time to move on.
