Grew up in Chesapeake and spent an awful lot of time pier fishing, mostly in the Outer Banks, but also from the Lynnhaven pier. French can illuminate you on pier fishing for big predators, but most folks on the pier are catching pan sized fish like spot and croaker, small bluefish, speckled trout and the occasional flounder. A medium sized surf outfit can be about right. You need something that will cast enough weight to hold bottom, where your fish will mostly be. This usually calls for two or three oz weights, bottom rigs (2 hooks, wire contraptions available anywhere) using bloodworms, Fishbites, shrimp, squid or cut fish (mullet, usually) for bait. A fairly cheap combo will accomplish that goal, no need for high dollar tackle. If you make certain to rinse your gear thoroughly after every exposure to salt water/air, it will last you long enough to at least discover whether or not you will need better stuff as you go along. Folks on the pier will help you with the right bait for any given day, depending on what's in the water, and observation of those doing the most catching will help you figure out where you should be casting. Piers can be crowded, but usually people are in it for the fun and sociability was more the norm than not when I used to frequent them as a younger man. Except at the end of the pier, where often anglers are fishing big rigs with live bait for the "big boys" like cobia, big blues, etc. If you aren't geared up or in the "club", sometimes, things out there can be less hospitable for newbies. As for lures, spoons, lipstick sized "Gotcha" baits, bucktail jigs and the like will catch bluefish, spanish mackerel, and sometimes flounder (jigs), but if you are totally new to it all, ease your way into it with spot and croaker on bloodworms and catch dinner while observing and learning by imitation what you need to know to move up to other approaches. Both of those fish are good table fare, easy to catch, and give a bit of a fight, especially when they're coming in two at a time. Good Luck, and if you get into it, let us know!

Sure. I hear ya.

But this is released after the rebranding. Here are the other polos:

This other shirt has black and what looks like a blend of maroon and grey. Just a thought.

Well... isn't Needle still hidden in the rocks on the outskirts of the area?

I'm guessing we shall be seeing that make an appearance again by the end of the season.

oh okay. Yeah that makes sense, I guess.

I agree with you that the complaining is about the lack of actual changes to the uniforms more than anything else. That being said, I think this post just reinforces that we've been fielding essentially the same uniforms for years now which kind of goes against what I think he's trying to say. It's not that we're moaning change. It's that the change isn't significant enough.

I would have just been happy if they had gotten rid of the damn shoulder stripes. I'm not a fan of those.

VT was selling grey and black polo shirts from Nike last year. Also had maroon and white shirts with a grey/silver VT logo as well.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

I'm guessing its the fact that people are bitching and moaning about relatively minor updates.

That being said, I think the tone of most of the complaining is that people were hoping for a massive makeover, and are pretty disappointed that the update was literally changing the stickers on 2 existing helmets and changing the font of the numbers.

aandddd that maroon is completely different than any other "new" maroon we have seen so far. Either alternate colors, terrible photo, or someone done messed up.

Fuente on Satellite camps:

We'll try to do our best to keep the numbers down."

I completely understand and agree with this. If you have 800+ kids at your camp, you won't be able to do your due diligence to properly evaluate everyone.

However, if this isn't handle properly, I can see this backfiring and cause some animosity with some recruits or high school coaches. If Fuente tells a high school coach that one of his players isn't allowed to come or even a "those two guys can come but those other two cannot", I can easily see some high school coaches or even recruits feeling slighted.

Fuente and Co. are going to have to walk a fine line to pull this off and not ruffle any feathers.

Exactly my thoughts. It is a huge gamble introducing this plan now. Hopefully it works out, and Whit must really think Coach Fuente can get us going in a hurry. If we have a bounce-back year this season, this could really pay off. But that's a huge 'if' considering we're in a four year lull with little to sell ourselves on right now other than the coaching change. I just look at the effect that Buzz had on the basketball team this year and hope Fuente can emulate that. I'm not talking 13-0 and a trip to the playoffs, but competitive in the ACC and an exciting offense that gets people hopeful for the future.

I don't like that there is fallout like this happening, but to play devil's advocate:

At the moment, our current Hokie club strategy isn't fulfilling our budget requirements. I don't like that someone, like yourself, who has loyally given at a high level for years is probably going to make a decision to decrease their donation instead of increasing it. But if we're falling behind, then maybe a strategy to get more new donors will be able to outweigh scenarios like yours.

Towards setting a precedent, I would lose a lot of respect for Fuente if he just kicked them off the team. That doesn't create any kind of experience to learn from and doesn't help develop these kids at all, something he's said repeatedly is a top priority. While some sort of punishment is certainly in line, there's no reason to compromise values just to look tough. You'll earn a lot more respect and inspire much better behavior by making a measured response that's what's best for the kids long-term, not a knee-jerk reaction.

You're right on target, I'd say. When O'Brien came in, his hands were totally tied as far as the tradition component. The Paterno loyalists thought Joe got such a raw deal that they did everything they could to keep the program exactly as it had been for decades. Anything and everything O'Brien wanted to do was met with resistance if it differed from Paterno's philosophy. A relevant quote from the Patriot News article while O'Brien was still there:

You can print this: You can print that I don't really give a ---- what the 'Paterno people' think about what I do with this program. I've done everything I can to show respect to Coach Paterno. Everything in my power. So I could really care less about what the Paterno faction of people, or whatever you call them, think about what I do with the program. I'm tired of it.

The scandal and the resulting conflict between the fans, Paterno loyalists, NCAA, and school administration tore the program apart for a few years, and Bill O'Brien deserves kudos for coming to State College to try to work it all out. We are lucky in that Beamer made the Fuente transition easy and left no space for disagreement. Unlike the departure of Bobby Bowden or Joe Paterno, there is little to no dissent amongst our fanbase because Beamer owned it.

Now, it also helps that we hired one of the up-and-comers in the coaching ranks, a guy who was at the top of everyone's wish list when it came to hiring a new coach. Can't underestimate that.

Don't have any statistics to go from, but I think our efforts should have been focused on getting more people involved and donating. I don't disagree with the intent behind the seat premiums, but I think it is very poorly timed. We are coming off of two back-to-back 7-6 campaigns, barely making bowls. If demand for season tickets was already through the roof, it makes sense, but not when we currently can't sell out. The administration must have A LOT of faith that Fuente can get this thing turned around quickly. If we struggle and limp to bowl eligibility again this year, I fear this will backfire immensely. At some point people are going to have to see the on-field product improve before they give more. I know it takes money to be competitive, but we really need a spark on the field to reignite the fanbase, IMO.

I am with you, I have only been a HC member since 2004, but have been giving $2000 a year for 11 years. But at my currently giving level I will drop from a Golden Hokie to a Silver Hokie. Now according to the chart I am going to have to move my seats. It will be easier to drop to a $350/seat ticket for four tickets than it will be to increase my giving.
