Saying VT is not a blue blood? Only 3 to 5 percent of the P5 schools are blue bloods. VT has a national reputation, we had a great reputation just a few years ago. One issue was that when we did we did not take advantage of it and recruit nationally. We could have and should have, then, perhaps, we would be a blue blood today. We want to recruit Virginia, sure, but look nationally if you truly want to be great. OSU, Clemson, ND, Michigan, Stanford, are all robbing our backyard...go to theirs.

Thank you I'll be sure to give this one a shot, and if I do it right I'll have to send some your way.

Only a few questions though: I'm assuming you mean hop pellets? and is there a recommended fermentation temperature range?

I'm not totally disagreeing with you here, so don't take this as me arguing with you, However...

Think back to the 2011 class. We targeted two highly ranked Virginia kids (Turner, OL & Hughes, LB), and Marquise Williams from NC. Those guys and a couple others were, most likely, going to go to school together based on the relationships that had developed during the recruiting process. When one domino fell that year, the rest fell the same way... UNC.

In my opinion (and it is only that) the reason it you don't see it happening as much at VT is because we don't get enough of those types of guys on a regular basis (a couple each cycle).

I think the reason people don't realize that it really does have an affect is because the relationships between these kids is rarely common information. An example would be Tomon Fox. Without Belmar and D'Andre Plantin as Hokies he never would have visited and seriously considered giving VT a fresh look. You can say we didn't land him but there are plenty more examples. Mook and other top targets championing VT often legitimizes programs like us to other recruits. Also, isn't UVA a perfect example of this? Thoroughbreds? The 5-stars, the Nicholson and Eli Harold guys? Development is a seperate issue, but once London got the first ones in the door the rest hardly needed recruiting.

I'm not saying it never happens, but it's a very small number. If they "absolutely" follow each other, what examples are there currently on the VT roster? It's not as though this kid is the first 4 star player who has ever committed to VT, yet I remember very few guys say they came to VT because so and so signed with VT.

Sure, a handful of guys have given VT a look because of Isaiah Ford, but have any actually committed to VT? Did anyone actually decide to come because Dwayne Lawson committed? Last year was a huge whiff with receivers...you'd think just one would have flipped/committed if it really mattered that much.

Great game, great atmosphere, great heart all around by the team. I can't express enough how much I enjoy watching Zach LeDay play. He is everything now that Jeff Allen wanted to be and I love him for it. Sure we can sit here and talk about how we blew a 12 point lead late, but I believe Clemson is a genuinely very good team. They are a very big team and after watching them for the first time today all season, I am not surprised they knocked off several of the perennials of the ACC. Total team effort and I hope the football recruits that were in the house enjoyed it as much as the fans did. Let's shock the world (again) Tuesday night in Hooville.

Good looking recipe, just a few questions though. How do you add the rice hulls to the mash? Alone at first to lay down at the bottom or a mix? Is there a big difference in toasting that extra pound of 6 row vs. not roasting it since the malting/germinating already happened?

Not disagreeing with any of the thoughts here on this thread. Development is absolutely the key to success at VT.

However, if a National Championship is what we are (one day) after (and I suspect we all dream of that one day) recruiting better players will need to happen eventually. I definitely think we can take the next step (competing for the Coastal) with the types of guys we've been getting. And I really don't think winning the ACC is completely out of question. But think back to the National Title game this year. Alabama has 4* & 5* guys two deep at every position (I'm making an assumption here). Nick Saban was rotating 6 guys on their defensive front (the three down linemen) against Clemson. Quality depth will probably be a key factor in determining the winner of the playoff in most years.

I was planning on it but it's a Sunday night so we're heading up for the FCD match.

He from Virginia. Liked what he saw and felt this weekend at VT and wants to stay HOME. What don't you ninnies understand?

For 5 gallon:
4lb American 6-row barley
1 lb American 6 Row barley that has been toasted in the oven at 350F for 10 minutes then cooled
1 lb 60 L Crystal
1/2 lb Carapils
1/2 lb chocolate malt
1/4 lb roasted barley
1.5 lb oatmeal
rice hulls

mash at 158F for 1/2 hour test for conversion

60 minute boil 1/2 oz of Willamette hops at 5.5% AA
30 minute 1/2 oz Willamette
15 minute 1/4 oz Willamette
1/4 tsp Irish moss (optional)

O.G. 1.048
Yeast- I used American Ale. Just about any yeast could be used here though.
Primary fermentation will take a week- 5 days. You can rack it off the next weekend.
Total ferment time should be about 14 days, expect a final gravity about 1.014.

First brewed Oct 12, 1996
If you want, you can use 2 row instead of 6-row. It's not necessary. If you have Pale Ale instead, that's cool too. Remember, this isn't rocket science it will not blow up if you mix and match a little.

The rice hulls are necessary because this has a super stack of oatmeal in it and it will stuck sparge if you do not put rice hulls in. Also, drain the liquid off ssssssllllllooooooowwwwwwww.

But all that oatmeal will be really present.
If you want it a little more alcoholic, add more of the first ingredient. As written, it'll get you in about 4.5% depending on efficiency numbers.

Vamos United! I was super excited when we got former Hokie Patrick Nyarko. Doubt he gets first team action but should be a good option off the bench.

I'm trying to go to the home opener against Colorado. Anyone else trying to go?

EDIT: Nigel de Jong doesn't have a DP contract. When Stevie G leaves LAG next year, de Jong will take his spot.

I'm not an X's and O's guy and I barely follow recruiting. Having said that I have common sense which has led me to believe that a bunch of 2*, 3* and a few 4* guys will get you some 10 win seasons, and maybe a couple of conference championship appearances and wins. To counter, a bunch of 3, 4 and a few 5 star dudes will lead to playoff berths and an occasional natty win. Regardless, French is right, even the 5* dudes need development.
