Building on this, did we lose any recruits who were committed prior to Fuente's hiring? I know we lost the punter Long, but I think he committed to Fuente and then decommitted, yes?
I think it can't be overstated how big an accomplishment it was to keep every commit to the former regime in place. Especially kids like Josh Jackson, who by all appearances was committing to Lefty moreso than to Virginia Tech.
Just #sauces, but I believe our new Head Coach has initiated more intense workouts for the team.

Indeed. Was going to cover that scenario in part 2/3 which will be basic strategy.
One point of clarification on riding time: It's not accruing one minute of RT that gets you a point, it's accruing 1 minute more than your opponent. Therefore, if Joey's opponent in your example manages a reversal and gains control, the RT clock will count backwards, erasing some of his RT.

I think we've always worked hard on Sophomore and Juniors. What I'm seeing is that our new "brand" is interesting to the kids. Beamerball as a brand had become quite stale. A lot of these kids will make their decisions prior to Fuente ever coaching a VT game, so it will still be tough to compete with Bama and Clemson (like with Crosby out of Ocean Lakes) when Fuente selling what Sarah Palin would call "hopey-changey."
It's reasonable to see recruiting improvement this year, but I doubt we reach our optimum level until we show progress on the field.

Dunn is greyshirting, a relatively new trend in wrestling. It takes a minute to explain, and im thinking i might do part of the series on it. But in short, he's at NRCC taking classes while working out unattached with the team through the Southeast RTC (the organization i banged the drum for at the beginning of the season). It allows him to preserve his 5 years for 4 eligibility so he never overlaps with Walz.
Super important for HWTs, especially the athletic ones like dunn who have to grow into their frame. He will be a rock for the program for the next 5 years i think.

Who else misses the blue chalk football target practice
Seeing the chatter already from the 2017 recruits about VT is pretty nice as well. It always seemed like we waited for most of our recruits to be seniors before we made offers or started recruiting them in most cases. I like that we are getting ahead of the game and beating other programs to the punch in building a relationship and keeping it growing with the new staff members.

wells who goes to the same school as bailey was rocking all UF gear. I think hes pretty solid to UF (not because of his choice of outfit) but I hope bailey is in his ear and he flips at the last min.
That much I can understand. The whole idea that a multi-thousand-dollar ring is a gift completely unrelated to the promise of marriage can really get under your skin if you're the guy.
Well, staying with the theme about the dunk contest, it was never established that you had to be an All-Star to participate. Dominique Wilkins wasn't selected as an All-Star the first year he won, nor was Kobe Bryant. Spud Webb? Kenny Walker? Dee Brown? Heh.
By the numbers, of all the dunk contest participants, only five are Hall of Famers (Erving, Jordan, Pippen, Sampson, Wilkins), with maybe another two on the way (Allen, Bryant). You almost never got the best players in the league to participate in the dunk contest. We romanticize the Jordan-Wilkins-Erving highlights to the point that the competition now looks watered down, but the truth of the matter is that outside of a scant few legitimate All-Stars, the rest of the field has usually looked just like you described it: "guys who can jump out the gym but don't really see the court otherwise."

All that said, I don't disagree with you about the Pro Bowl.
jerseyhokie29 since you seem to know everything VT wrestling, I was wondering if you knew what happened or is happening with Andrew Dunn? He was a pretty highly rated HWT recruit out of eastern pa, he was supposed to be a freshman this year but I don't see him listed anywhere on the roster.
But when I talk about crootin', I mean stealing prospects from other schools, offering unlimited Hardee's coupons, undermining the competition, and general chicanery related to landing the best prospects we can.
Even if we miss out on some targets this cycle, I am not going to be too bummed. Fuente had 2 months and he has done a heck of a job in that time. I am looking forward to the 2017 cycle with all the talent we have. If we can improve on the field this fall, I think recruiting will pick up some too.
I don't get it. Did we do something above and beyond usual bowl prep that was different this year?
If so, why wouldn't they stick it out and see how the new staff handles things?
