pretty much.. make sure you're accounted for and have a spot. if you're a 3* and higher and are not signing on signing day they you're at a huge disadvantage.
I've seen kids not sign and think they can wait and wait and then they go to sign and the offer isn't commitable anymore because they have already reached their class limit.

Absolutely. Though I would not recommend the most basic or the Limited (unless that's your thing). I'd recommend premium.
I think we all know the real culprit

4WD = can be operated in a mode all four wheels get steady power, no matter how much slippage one wheel is having compared to the others.
the only way all 4 wheels can get steady power is through use of diff lockers....which you allude to here
Traditional 4WD vehicles have locked (or lockable) differentials that put a fixed % of total power to each wheel (e.g. 25% each).
but unfortunately most 4WD vehicles don't actually have locking differentials. Almost all 4WD vehicles on the market today can still be billed as 4WD because they send power to both axles and many (if not all) have some form of limited slip (referred to as all sorts of things like EDM or Auto-locking diffs) but they do not have true mechanical lockers. This is an important point because with the limited slip (or anything similar..they're all effectively the same) you still get a difference in wheel spin rate on the same axle (the "limit" refers to the maximum spin rate differential allowed before the diff locks temporarily to send power to the 'stuck' wheel) resulting in inconsistent wheel spin across all the wheels. When all of your wheels are spinning, but at different rates, you can still get stuck. Having true mechanical lockers (pretty much only found on Wranglers and Tacomas that I know of but can be purchased as an after-market addition for virtually any vehicle) eliminates that problem.
If you drive a vehicle made after 2000 and it has 4WD the chances are very good that you don't actually have the ability to send equal amounts of power to all 4 wheels simultaneously. You'll see those vehicles get stuck in a foot of snow and they'll have a wheel spinning on each axle. OR, if they have some variation of the limited slip differential they'll have a wheel start to spin and then stop spinning as the wheel on the other side of the same axle receives more power and then begins to slip itself. Now you have all four wheels alternatively spinning but none of them are getting STEADY power. The true mechanical differential locker is absolutely critical to have in these situations because it is the only way you can guarantee steady un-interrupted power going to all 4 wheels simultaneously, which is what you need for your best chance to get un-stuck.
The reason you don't see diff lockers very often anymore is because they're really only useful in very specific situations. They are heavier, more expensive, prone to having problems (more moving parts = more potential for failures) and if the user accidentally leaves the lockers locked they can cause some serious wear and tear and even damage the vehicle. The market for vehicles requiring such a mechanism is very small and the likelihood that a user is going to use that feature in the life-span of the vehicle is very low. Almost all 4WD and AWD vehicles will perform admirably in the snow and with the technology we have today with chemicals being put on roads to treat them and snow plows its pretty rare for someone to be driving in more than a foot of virgin snow. There isn't really a need for the lockers these days. BUT, if you find yourself faced with 20-30" of snow and need a vehicle that will get you through it your best bet is going to be a 4WD vehicle with true mechanical differential lockers. So you're pretty limited there.
