I didn't say prevent the media from discussing a trial in progress. I said cut off their information. That way, articles which are already heavily spun will not have the credibility associated with facts. It'll all be editorial and can't be presented as anything else without sources. Nothing I've said tramples on any part of the constitution (though the only constitutional questions raised would regard the first amendment alone). Freedom of speech and the press are not abridged in any way that violates case law (which have upheld time/place/manner restrictions that have a real interest), especially when I've been explicit about making everything public immediately after conclusion of the trial.

Cases of note:
Waller v Georgia (outlines test for restricting access to trial)

Globe Newspaper Co. v. Superior Court for Norfolk County (The right of access to criminal trials is not absolute, but the circumstances under which the press and public can be barred are limited. The State must show that denial of such right is necessitated by a compelling governmental interest and is narrowly tailored to serve that interest.)

Sheppard v Maxwell ("The carnival atmosphere at trial could easily have been avoided since the courtroom and courthouse premises are subject to the control of the court.")

Estes v Texas (Justice Clark was concerned about the harm to the defendant in the form of mental harassment in having a trial televised and the possible creation of community bias. Justice Clark directly held the trial judge
responsible for the protection of the individual's right to a fair trial by an

Chandler v Florida (reiterated the
finding that a media organization does not have a First Amendment right to
broadcast court proceedings.)

Nebraska Press Ass'n v Stuart (Prior restraint orders are normally found to be in violation of the Constitution and should not be entered. However, the court is permitted to enter appropriate protective orders controlling the dissemination of information from attorneys, parties, witnesses, court staff, and law enforcement agencies where the orders are necessary and appropriate for due process protection of rights)

If he had started last year, or had been neck and neck for a starting spot... I'd be right there with your logic.

But he wasn't until he was and then he was our best lineman by far when it comes to knocking defenders off their spot.
