It's actually a bit creepy how close some of the guys on there were. Joel's key matchup is right on, TFF went through all of our RBs until he settled on the last one remaining, which mirrored how the season went pretty perfectly, Mark's assessment of ECU being the measure of our focus level, Mason picks us to beat OSU and get bitten by depth (he says on the DL) at some point, French is French, and as Joe predicted, without an effective running game we finished the season 6-6.

Some who were dead wrong on the other hand...
Alex picks Josh Stanford as breakout player
Mark picks RVD as breakout player
Everyone who picked Pitt - Yeah, we lost and it was a big game, but neither of us were really in contention for the Coastal by the end of that one.
The eternal optimism of so man 9-11 win predictions (one of these years, guys. It'll happen).

So goeth college football.

Thank you sir for the sweet torture. I grew up eating all those wonderful Little Debbie flavors, and now live 2000 miles away from them. Curse you Little Debbie, you evil spawn of Betty Crocker!!!

I've refrained from commenting anything of value on this thread because I'm pretty sure that just about all of us are gonna look like complete morons one way or the other by this time next year.

No one guy is bigger than the team.

Searels is the OL coach, so unless he's overruled by Loeffler or Beamer, he decides who gets to play and when. If Teller is getting pushed by Osterloh, I gotta believe it's a good thing.

That said, I'm hoping to hear about him taking first team reps again now.

I agree that injuries can derail what can be a good season quickly. However I'm not taking that until said injury happens.

I can understand that, and if you take injuries completely out of the equation I do think Tech easily gets to 10 wins.

That being said, injuries are almost a given during a football season. Depth has to be a factor when making season predictions.

I think one of the reasons for concern is that the OL, more than any other position, requires a very high level of trust and confidence in the people starting playing next to you.

As a personal anecdote from my limited experience: once in spring scrimmage, coach put me in. Rick Razzano, yeah him, looked at me like who the fork are you? I can't remember if it was him or somebody else though who said, "we're counting on you." That said, it is my strong opinion, even though I can't say what Searles is doing, anybody who thinks subs shouldn't work with the first team is not seeing that it is an opportunity. (And if Beamer was upset with his 2nd string quarterback in El Paso he had only himself to blame. The guy probably never had reps with the first team.) I applaud Searles if that is what is going on.

I refute your "icing or frosting or glaze" comment with two words... POUND CAKE

Also angel food cake, but my pound cake recipe is better than my angel food cake recipe, so...

He is literally the only "sole potential starter" that didn't start the scrimmage with the first group. In fact, he spent just as much time with the twos as with the ones. This wasn't a couple of series, this was half the scrimmage at least.

Why isn't Searels "building depth" at the center or right guard position? The most likely answer is that if Teller was as far ahead of his competition for his spot as Gallo or Conte was he would be running with the first team all the time. It makes more sense for him to be getting pushed (like Loeffler says) than it is for him to be so good that he doesn't need 1st team reps.

I think 8-4 is fair, leaning towards optimistic. The VT scout team should have been able to win the Wake Forest game 3-0 in regulation. Sure we had injuries, but there were some baffling offensive playcalls in that game.

We have offensive talent to be sure, and they could be really good if kept fairly injury free. But as far as I'm concerned, injuries or not, the jury is still deliberating on Loeffler and Searles as answers for this team.
