Yeah, our base has been 4-2-5 mainly for a while now. The whip has rarely been on the field with the nickel usually taking his place because of spread looks with multiple receivers.
I really am intrigued about that depth chart. With 3 of their 4 top WRs out for OSU, it might be a good idea to have Vandyke on the field in the base look and try to take away the run game first with 3 LBs. Forcing them to throw against our corners with a lot of inexperience at receiver...hmm. Bud may have something up his sleeve. Who knows.

I almost think that might be a good call, especially if Juice is within a month or so of returning.
Pretty sure we've been running more of a 4-2-5 of late than a 4-4-3. So this in theory would help us in run defense not hurt us.
This is CFB, if you can put even two year of winning together I think you can safely say you are maintaining momentum.
Based on some of the more recent comments, the roster page has been changing throughout the day.
ROLB and LOLB...shall I say, intrigued? We've always ran more of a 4-4-3, where the whip and rover are faster, better cover LBs...are we really running a 4-3-4? that'll hurt us on run defense...even if it cures the big pass play woes...how many of us had accepted the inherent risk in Foster's scheme tho? FRENCH! please man, get a look at practice and tell us if this is really happening...

They haven't even completely overturned a roster twice and you want to start talking like they're maintaining momentum?

ODU is in the American. Until they're in either the Big XII, B1G, ACC, SEC, or Pac12, they are no worry at all to us. They will peak out at a level close to where ECU has been recently, a very good mid major program that might be a nationally relevant team here and there, but will be locked out of breaking through that glass ceiling for the long haul because they just aren't big enough. They hopped on the football bus too late in the game, and there's too much distance to play catchup. They are going to be left behind when the Power 5 breaks away.
At one point, Virginia had momentum, too, and they were the team that was going to quickly overtake us in the commonwealth. Its easy to get hot and have a hot streak with a player that is better than most. Even we did that in 1999 with Vick. What's hard is maintaining that momentum. ODU, like Virginia, doesn't know what it takes to maintain, and it isn't something that is picked up on quickly. Right now, they're still wading in the kiddie pool of college football, yet they talk like they're swimming laps in the Olympic tank. They don't scare me, nor should they scare any Hokie.
Indeed interesting. Different base defense this year? I could get onboard with having Vandyke on the field a lot more often. Could just be mislabeling though.

Now I start worrying.
Officially, at least, VT says there's no change to his status with the team. Although I did not see him out there today.
That Huelskamp slot caught my eye as well. That guy has the makings of a playmaker that comes out of nowhere. Hard not to get excited about rooting for him.
Like.
At what point does a school which has gone through 2 level transitions in their first 6 years, along with never having a losing season and 2 championship runs, stop being on a hot streak and just be a school dedicated to building a winning program?
Seriously the dismissive nature which you guys seem to hold ODU in is dangerous when you see the trend they are on. Most FBS transitional teams don't win 6 games in their first 2 or 3 years let alone season 1.

So which of my claims are you actually refuting?
I claim that they are building a name as an exciting team to watch on a national level, you never address that.
I claim they play a more watchable brand of football, you never address that.
And I claim that they have all the makings of another program on the rise, you sort of address that.
So .5-3 I guess.
This is a school which has yet to have a losing season in any level of football, if that does not demonstrate that there might be something there I don't know what will. I would continue to be dismissive of them while you can, I fear it wont be long that we can say the gap is huge. So long as they remain G5 they will still be hampered by that, but they are clearly making the investment to be taken seriously.
Everyone in Texas thought Baylor and TCU were jokes of programs a decade ago too, now they will probably finish 1/2 in the Big XII and fight for a playoff spot for the second year in a row.
And if playing teams year in year out is a losing proposition how about we just say screw you to the ACC and go independent again?
