Herman had an injured RB and he didn't trust Curtis Samuel, Brionte Dunn, Rod Smith, Warren Ball, etc. He also didn't trust his QB. JT wasn't exactly lights out against Navy. He also didn't trust his OL. He also didn't trust his WR corps. As it turns out, his distrust was well-placed. On the defensive side, we all were neurotic about the pass defense, felt good about the DL, but the LB corps was a concern - especially Curtis Grant - and all those concerns were justified by VT's performance.
2014 Ohio State should remind CFB fans that teams have a potential, and many of them, especially young teams, have to grow into that potential. Taking VT out of it, the team that played Navy resembles the team that played Wisconsin, Bama, and Oregon only in the sense that they wore a scarlet and gray color scheme.

But we're talking about this situation. You apparently didn't read what I posted either. If a woman had a gun, knife or weapon and tried to assault him then yes throw the punch otherwise pick a different course of action. there is no way he is in real "danger" in this situation. I highly doubt any of those white college coeds were digging for a knife or other "weapon" to use against him. Again, she may not be blameless here but that doesn't justify her getting hit like that by him.
should we go ahead and bust out this bad boy, then?

That may be true in general, but not always. And it certainly is not an excuse for either of the sexes to inflict any kind of contact on another person.
How about this example: I am 6' 2", 210lb. I am a reasonably strong man and certainly taller than average. If I ran into 5' 7" 135lb Ronda Rousey and she wanted to hurt me, I guarantee you that she would wreck my shit.
What if instead of a woman this QB had hit a 120lb 22 year old man that had tried to get him with a knee to the groin? Would you have been as repulsed?
I am with you in that hitting a man hitting a woman should never happen. But I also am realistic in that there is a very odd standard that goes on when you just make a blanket statement like that and ignore all other factors. its strange that if it had been a male of similar size being punched in the face, nobody would have thought twice about this story (or, really mind blowing, what if this was a stronger FEMALE hitting a smaller male?) Again, I doubt that anyone would really care. People certainly arn't giving Hope Solo a hard time about literally doing that.
Wow, a lot going on here.
Some of you may know that I used to deal with violence and rape against women. I've seen these kind of incidents before and much worse.
For what it's worth, here's my take:
1) In the video, they clearly have both been waiting for an opportunity at the bar. As the group of women leave the girl slides in behind them. Johnson reaches in his arm to try to take a place as well. At about 1:42 in the video you can see that she is not even moving for the bar until she sees Johnson coming. Then she moves to get in. The girl feels his arm and shoulder and pushes back to try to push him out of the space. Johnson has not reacted. he is just trying to grab a spot. You can see from 1:45 to 1:47 she is actively pushing her body to move him out of the space. There is however enough space for both to be at the bar and make their respective orders. You can argue that she felt threatened that he was holding her back by not removing his arm, but again she didn't make a move to the bar until she notices him trying to do so. She doesn't allow for him to try to be at the bar with her, in space big enough for both of them. She initiates aggression by pushing deliberately and with force with her back, hips and butt to try to force him out of the space.
2) at 1:54/5 it looks like her left arm is on his chest pushing him. You can't see it, but it looks as if he grabs this arm first. This is the point of escalation. Everything beyond this point means both parties can sue each other.
3) At 1:56 her right hand goes up and speculating she appears to be saying "let go" with some profanities. He then grabs that hand as well. This is domination. Johnson appears to have both hands in control and is pushing her into the hipster behind.
4) You can see other female hands coming into frame grabbing Johnson's arms. It seems that this is what frees her left arm so that she can strike. She tries to kick or push with her feet/leg. Unless I am missing it, I don't see a groin strike which would be a swift upward motion of the knee. At 2:01 when she starts to pull back for her strike you can see that there are two or three hands on his right arm holding it down. She strikes, those hands delay his motion to grab the striking hand before it does so.
5) After she strikes he retaliates and strikes her with more force.
So here are the takeaways. As some have suggested though perhaps not so eloquently stated, the girl is not without fault. She initiated aggression by attempting to push him out of the space. The issue for Johnson is that at one point he appears to have both hands grasped, with other people trying to free the girl and the girl trying to push hiim away with her leg/foot. Again I do not see a groin strike. At this point he has control of both the girl and the situation, he could have and should have let her go and walked away, or tried to calm it down. He doesn't. The court and whoever they call to review this will look at this like I do and point this out. Therefore without any other evidence it will be deemed as him assaulting her first by grabbing her hands and pushing her back violently. her defending herself, along with her friends to try to get him to stop grabbing/pushing her. And then him committing battery with the final strike.
Now as I said, both sides can sue each other. But without any other evidence this is how I believe someone like me would comment on this video.
The gif isn't the entire encounter, here's what the actual video appears to show from my perspective:
- Two other women leave the bar. (on full video but cut out of YouTube clip below)
- The woman from the incident moves into one of the two places that they had vacated.
- Johnson follows behind her, the woman turns and speaks to Johnson as he tries to get to the other spot.
- Johnson tries to squeeze between her and other customers near the bar to take the other empty spot at the bar and the woman slides to the left trying to block him from getting to the other spot.
- As Johnson is about to get to the second spot, she turns around and starts talking to (or yelling at) Johnson and pushing him back with her left arm while raising her right fist.
- Johnson grabs the woman's right hand and simultaneously the woman moves backwards into the ironic hipster in a tanktop. The backwards movement appears to be because Johnson is pushing her, but could also conceivably be because she is trying to back away from him.
- Around this time someone outside the view of the camera reaches in towards Johnson waiving their hand by his face possibly trying to slap or scratch him.
- She raises her right knee and then either pushes him back or kicks out followed almost immediately by a punch from her left hand. Her punch lands right as the Youtube video below clicks from 21 to 22 seconds.
- Immediately after her hand contacts him, Johnson begins to gather his right arm back for a punch, his punch contacts her right as the Youtube video clicks from 22 to 23 seconds.
- I don't see the pause where he is thinking about it between the two punches that some others have indicated, his punch connects right around one second after hers does, and their arms are tangled for part of that second and he is drawing his arm back for another part of the second.
- Right after the punch Johnson leaves the view of the camera
- The woman never looses consciousness, so saying that he knocked her out is misleading. It does appear that she is dazed, this could be because of the force of the punch or the surprise of being punched.
All of this takes place in about 20-25 seconds, and the time from when she starts pushing him away with her left arm to Johnson leaving the frame is less than 10 seconds. Here's a portion of the video that shows more of the incident than the gif:
I have two main places of disagreement with you.
First that you know she isn't a threat. There is at least one other person off camera reaching towards Johnson's face, are two women a threat? She has several friends come and comfort her after the incident, would 3 or 4 women be a threat to him? This doesn't necessarily mean that she was or wasn't a threat, just that we don't have enough about what's happening outside the camera's viewpoint to form an informed opinion. For all we know one of her friends could have been yelling, "hold him while I grab my taser and we'll teach the a-hole."
The other place I disagree is saying that Johnson knocked her out, when the video clearly shows that that isn't the case.
Just to be clear, while I think that it might have possibly been legal for him to hit her, I don't think it was right. Legal/Illegal doesn't always match up exactly with Right/Wrong and just judging by the video and not knowing anything else about the incident I tend to think that they were both in the wrong and should both be charged. I also think that because he hit a woman, Johnson should also suffer further non-judicial repercussions both informal such as loss of respect and formal such as how he's lost of his spot on the team.
OSU fans have 30x the class of WVU
this isn't fair to OSU fans at all...30X a negative number is just a really really negative number. OSU fans have the absolute value of 30X the class of WVU fans...that's much better.
It's one of my favorite games of all time. It was the classic bi-polar hokie watching experience. I yelled in anger so much yet celebrated so much at some of the awesome big plays on both sides of the ball.
It's looking like the other one.
Stroman needs to be more careful with the ball on returns. I know everyone is excited about this guy with the ball in his hands but there and at least a dozen plays I could show you from last year where we would have been better off with a knee in the endzone or a fair catch (rewatch Duke game, that was the one that really jumped out at me.)

Same here, until Riley's Pick 6... I lost all control of my arms. I was waiting for the ice to rain down, but then remembered that OSU fans have 30x the class of WVU.
Well, I understand your problem. When I first got in with a group that bought season tickets, we were the rowdiest bunch in our area. There were, indeed, some complaints, and several defections as folks who were there to knit or read a book moved away. Eventually, it seemed that folks like us, totally invested and yelling the whole game long, except, of course, when we were lined up offensively, well, we seemed to be in the norm. I think the thing is, it is a live sporting event, and when we learned to quit the occasional expletives and tone down the absurdly loud whistles (I still apologize to those in front of me for hurting their eardrums, I have a world class two finger whistle), Lane as a whole settled in to a knowledgeable uproar when there was a good game afoot. Yeah, when we were way ahead of a "lesser opponent", we would lapse, but standing up and acting crazy is damn near required when the game heats up. I'm not saying folks don't wish people in front of them would sit down sometimes, or even that someone may still ask folks to be seated, but it's been a long time since that was the prevailing sentiment. C'mon down, scalp a ducat and stand up and act crazy. It'll make the sad drive home almost worth it.
As was our case the whole night. Everytime a big play happened, I'd stand up and scream for 5 seconds, then promptly return to my somber nervous fetal position for fear of angering those around me.

The Shoe's problem is how the seats are sold to the highest bidder. Varsity O club members that have been there for 20 years take place of the young wild fans that will make some noise. That is my biggest problem with the Shoe, it's as if I'm watching a tennis match. I feel like I can't stand or act crazy because of the 90 year olds sitting behind me. It is what it is though
It seems obvious to me that we don't take that knee often enough. It's easily proven, statistically, that we have not done well with that. When, then, will we ever learn?
