His reaction was not one of self defense. It was an aggressive and unnecessary punch to the face.
Well first of all, I haven't looked at the clip in its entirery - all I saw was a 2 second GIF and by the looks of it, no, doesn't look like she was putting him in danger (but again - that's not my point. Please go back to see what it was).
If she attacked him out of the blue FIRST - then I would've reacted like him and knocked her out. I don't care who you are, if you attack me first, then i'm going to defend myself.
That being said, it looks like from what I've read he pushed her / shoved her first, which makes what he did look like a douchebag and not what I condone.

*sigh* I'm sorry but you haven't READ what I said.
I'm not specifically talking about this situation. I'm talking about if one should defend one self regardless of the gender of the assaulter. Please go back and look again.

Out of curiosity, how does that change if she did, in fact, knee him in the groin? I think that would/could be considered a reasonable threat.

When a woman is clearly to blame (for starting the altercation, not for the ferocity of his eventual response), why would you not blame her?

I can agree that the ferocity of the punch was an overreaction, but the video demonstrates that you're wrong about just about everything else in your response:

If you watch the video, not just the gif, it's quite clear that she was the aggressor. He grabbed her arm only after she raised a fist as if to throw a punch. That is CLEARLY not a defensive stance. She had every intention of punching him. Then while he's trying to restrain her, she throws a knee to his midsection and a (admittedly weak, but it's her left, and presumably weaker hand) punch to his face.

Her position at the bar was not in danger. Two ladies left the bar and she and he both squeezed in to assume those places. She was not trying to defend her place, but to prevent him from taking the other place.

Watch the video. If there was room to simply walk away, neither he nor she would be pushing and jostling to get to the bar and this altercation would never have taken place.

Again, even if there's room for that, what good does that do?
Instead he overreacted and punched her in the face after starting the fight in the first place.
Again, she attempted to punch him once, then kneed him the package, then punched him in the face before he threw a punch. How does that equate to HIM starting the fight? If trying to squeeze your way to the bar in a college watering hole qualifies as starting a fight, I'd be serving multiple life sentences for hundreds of assault charges from my college days at the Hokie House.

So, I will bite and defend Smart and Narduzzi. Personnel impacts gameplans, and as Nicholas Jervey from 11W noted on twitter this morning, both Michigan State and Alabama had issues in the secondary all season.

Also, Foster didn't change his scheme as much as he changed alignment to mess up blocking angles. The Hokies are accustomed to playing cover 4 and cover 0. Up front, the "stand up ends" (one DE and the backer) were designated "edge players" and they still executed force and spill calls with the alley players. The interior linemen still had gap fit responsibilities, with the mike attacking any bubbles. Little changed except for the alignment.
Narduzzi and Smart ran their defense instead of re-inventing their wheel. Narduzzi's scheme is more similar to VT, however they do not play their strong safety as close to the line of scrimmage like VT does on most snaps. Bama uses Saban's scheme, for better or worse, and it is a scheme that has produced Super Bowls under Bill Parcells and Bill Bellichek. They run 3-4 in base, and then move their weak-side OLB up as a defensive end in nickel against spreads. Their DL occupy two gaps and let linebackers flow to the football. They don't change- they adjust, and they didn't adjust quick enough to stop the Buckeyes.
Oregon gift wrapped the game for the Buckeyes. They played 5 man fronts (3 DL, 2 LBs) often in the National Title Game. The Buckeyes kept giving it to Elliott and the Ducks didn't adjust.

In danger of serious harm or death....do you think he was "in danger" here?? Or just in danger of a bruised ego and maybe a small bruise somehwere? Did she have a weapon on her?? Was she violently assaulting him repeatedly with no way to stop except by using force? He looks to me to have her at least half restrained and then calculates the punch and throws it. He could have pushed her down or wrapped her up and called a bouncer.
I can't believe people are actually advocating hitting a girl. People are claiming that if they were under attack they would defend themselves against a woman. However we aren't talking about a woman with a gun or a knife or any type of weapon. We are talking about a young college girl who is a lot smaller and is no way shape or form a legitimate "threat". He's going to get hit harder on the football field....especially if he faces us in the ACCCG. I would argue he is in a lot more danger on the football field than he was in that situation. Unreal. I hope he is gone from the team for good. If he wasn't I'd have serious issue with the school if that was my daughter. She may not be an innocent bystander in the situation but she didn't deserve the punch she received. I'm surprised someone didn't clock him back cause that's what should have happened. Unreal.
She is wrong. She shouldn't throw punches or kick him or anything like that. Women assaulting men is also wrong.
He should have walked away. If he does that, nothing comes of this and he's still a football player at FSU.

I think Bud lives and dies with the same concepts. The only time I can ever recall Bud using a true spy all game long was Exum vs Dwayne Allen in the ACC title game. I think he wants to get in all the gaps and give the QB nowhere to go. Sometimes they will break a big run, but (as happened last year) the TFLs and turnovers will outweigh the occasional big QB run.
