I guess from someone who followed him from game 1 thru game 12, you do tend to go toward the idea that if he had faced VT later in the year, he would have done much better. Either experience is a great teacher, or it is meaningless. I don't think it's an insult to VT if you conclude that a guy who broke all kinds of records for TD's, passing efficiency, etc got better as the year went along. You can still credit for VT having a defense, that we all recognize, was very, very good.

The 85 scholarship creates depth issues. Unless you hit on every recruit, you will have depth issues, especially when you throw in injuries and transfers. IMO, one of the major reasons Ohio State was able to beat Alabama was because the Tide didn't have enough quality LB's healthy to stop Ezekiel Elliot. I also think Oregon was really hurt by not having quality receivers due to injuries and suspensions. It affects everyone, even the blue bloods who recruit the best players. Adding onto that, what is the difference between a 3 star and a 4, or even 5, star? HS achievement, an inch of height, 10 lbs of weight, a .1 sec of 40 time, and a bunch of human opinion. The list of 5 star guys who couldn't play at the college level is long, as is the list of 2 and 3 star guys who were magnificent.

I think the loss was good for them early in the year, but my gut tells me that they still wouldn't have gotten there without two events in late Nov. I sense those 2 things drew that team closer together, and allowed them to be better than they were.

Your argument is inconsistent. You say below you don't have a problem playing OSU but you then say there is a greater injury risk in games that are "entertaining." Which is it? Are you worried about injuries or not?

Besides, that's a bogus argument anyway. Lee Suggs blew his knee out against UCONN. Shai Mckenzie blew his out against WMU, not OSU.

And why play a schedule similar to our competition? Maybe we set the trends instead of follow them? Or follow UVA's lead, they certainly looked like competition last November.

Never mind that Indiana stymied Ohio State for 3 quarters with a bear front out of their base 3-4, until the skill level of Indiana's linebackers/safeties and a couple of fortuitous no-calls led to the game breaking open late.

There seems to be an odd notion among them that only top 10 teams possess talent or skill. Many OSU fans still think of VT as a program with little in the way of talent but with good/great coaches. Not all, but many. Combine that with a great end of the year last year and you get the confidence you're seeing.

What do you think? Is it better to open with a quality opponent or a directional-type school? Is the focus and intensity you get preparing for a good opponent a net plus or minus if you take a loss?

I have 0 faith in us being able to lock down VA like Alabama is locked down for Alabama/auburn, but landing some of the top 5 every now and then would be wonderful especially at positions of need with immediate PT being able to be used as an incentive.

The information has always been there, it's just a little easier to find now. It's meant to be a way to publicly recognize HC donors. Of course, anyone who wishes to remain anonymous has the option to do so.

I hope he feels this strongly about losing out on blue-chip recruits too. I read some news about other head coaches flying in doing home visits the day before a recruit's decision. I feel like Frank should do everything possible to land these guys as well. Hopefully he has the competitive fire burning in regards to recruiting.

Edit: to clarify, I like Frank Beamer a lot, and my purpose for this post wasn't to slight him. When I read this story, I just wondered what he thinks about all the recruiting misses we've had. Does he get as mad at losing out on a recruiting miss as he does when he directly loses a competition? The only reason I threw out that example, is because I don't think it exists in a vacuum. If you do a simple google search on Nick Saban and in-home visits, you'll see tons of results of him visiting even recruits in VA (e.g. Dashawn Hand). If you replace Nick Saban's name with Frank Beamer, how many results are returned? It's basically non-existent. Of course, it could be just coincidental that no one ever reports on Frank Beamer's visits, but I find that more unlikely than if he isn't really doing many in-home visits with top recruits. But yes, I obviously don't have all the evidence, so I could be wrong.
