Locking down the borders for Virginia is impossible going forward. Period. End of story. God I hate this argument.

We're in a new age of recruiting where, hey, everyone has access to these kids the likes of which we've never seen before. Doesn't matter if the school is in their backyard, or halfway across the country, if the kid is good, he'll have a coach from that school in contact with him as often as the NCAA will allow (and even that line gets blurred). The natural advantages about being the in-state school that used to exist are long gone. This is why you routinely see the top talent in states across the country go out of state to play sports. We're in an age where there are no borders to lock down, and every top school needs to be treated line an in-state opponent on the recruiting trail.

I don't give a damn that Virginia had all this great talent over the last 2 years. 15 years, ago, when recruiting nationwide was an effort in securing your top in state talent, yeah, it would have been devastating to miss out on them, but now, in this recruiting landscape?

If anything, we need to make it a legitimate effort to be more of a regional and national recruiting program. Our recruiting footprint right now is one of the smallest in the country. We're essentially playing the recruiting game with one hand tied behind our back. We need to go all out and emphasize getting top talent, regardless of location. In my opinion, that is the only realistic way in which we're going to improve our recruiting in any significant amount.

I'm pretty sure Yetur Matos out of Chancellor in Fredericksburg got an offer as well. He'll be a fairly big recruit in the region.

I actually disagree about needing Beamer to be more active. In a time when everyone is using 'Beamer is getting too old' and 'he won't be your coach when you graduate' against us, the worst thing we could do is place a major role in recruiting on him. What we should be doing is allowing the younger guys on staff who are more in tune with the players coming out of high school and can better connect with them on social media and in person, to be the ones taking the major role in recruiting. Yeah, bring Beamer in to possibly help close the deal at the very end, but really, we need our specialized recruiters to do just that, recruit their asses off.

And over the last 2 years, its actually working. These new guys have cranked it up to another level, and we're on the verge of seeing it pay off on the field.

where do you see any of that in this thread? No one is stating our recruiting is "poor", but rather it could be improved with more of an emphasis from the head man. We're recruiting around 25th nationally as well which is what we have done on average for the last decade. The biggest improvements to me though are trying to take the correct amount position-wise per class and trying to recruit more players that play the actual position in HS.

Some people are happy staying mediocre and with the status-quo, regardless of circumstances.

I thought this topic and thread was fine. Ford's transfer destination is substantial new news, there wasn't an existing topic about it and you sourced everything well. In my mind a new thread and a comment buried in an old thread of a similar subject are different.

Saying that every criticism of Frank not being in homes stems from one incident is about as "accurate" as saying that just because we don't hear stories of him in houses doesn't mean he isn't.

I think people view this topic and immediately throw up walls and stay on the polar opposites of each other and say things like "give me a f'ing break" and "he doesn't, period". That's not how discouse goes. And if either of you defending FB are referring to my post, I never said FB doesn't know how to recruit. Nor Bud, Nor Lefty. And that's the problem, you're taking a hyperbolic stance when I didn't make one.

FB and Bud need to be more active. This is not a new debate. Bud not liking the recruiting trail has been a topic of discussion since my time at VT in 95 - 99. FB not doing many late season recruiting visits also not a new topic. None of that stems from a single incident.

So tone down the vitriol and hyperbole. It's just perspective. Other programs are putting their HC front and center late in the recruiting season to close on big time recruits. Every year there are numerous articles of many other HC's doing so. It's just the way the game is played now. Does that mean FB is not doing it, no one knows for sure, but the lack of any verifiable evidence that he has been is somewhat suspect given the multitude of articles and social media posts from recruits, recruitniks and journalists about said visits.

So again, I'm not saying he isn't doing it, just that he needs to do more of them. Am I wrong?

I think Bud has had a renewed interest/effort level in recruiting the last several years as well. Not sure if it has to do with the possibility of taking over the program or just realizing he had to do it, but his effort has seemed better.

The only thing ridiculous is that you think he puts in the same amount of time recruiting that other HCs do when every leading indicator clearly shows otherwise. His health is his #1 priority as it should be, but if that is getting in the way of VT's staff being able to do their job and close recruits to advance the program is that fair to the program? Here is a concrete example for you. Last year nick saban flew down to southern florida and toured the high schools for recruiting. When was the last time you've heard of FB doing something like that outside of a car ride a few hours down to NC?

Go back and look at the offers to top tier players over the last 5 years and how many did VT land.

And how many other teams didn't land those players?

During the closing stretch of NSD this past year he was not physically able to even talk to the recruits to potentially sway some of them. While that happened every other HC involved was able to.

I know. I really wish Beamer hadn't planned on having throat surgery. Seems he could have disregarded his health in an effort to land recruits because that's what is important.

I mean come one. This is just getting more and more ridiculous. I'm not telling you that you can't think he isn't as good of a recruiter as the Nick Sabans and Jimbo Fishers of the world. I'm just saying that the evidence being used is far from the whole story.
